THR Hospital Stay Duration

How long did everyone stay in hospital after their op?

I was only in for four days and three nights after my hip replacement. I only managed to stay at home one day before being readmitted due to a hospital acquired infection.

I then spent a further six days in hospital on an IV drip. The consultant never really identified the real cause of the infection. It was either very severe gastroenteritis or based on some of the blood antibodies that were found Hepatitis A. It was not a very pleasant experience.

Hi Elaine, at last I have found someone who has had both hips done at the same time, which is what I am due to have done soon. I have not got a date as yet, but should be done soon. Can you give me any advice as to how you got on please? Like how long you were in hospital for, any physio, or when you could get out of bed, as it is not the same as only having the one done. Please get back to me?

Hi Brindle,   I had my op at 9am by spinal injection and was back in the ward by 11.30am... sitting up and eating lunch... did a few exercises then out of bed at 4pm to sit in chair for half an hour.   Next day more exercises and a small walk with zimmer frame.   On the Saturday I managed to walk with crutches a short distance.

I was in hospital for 8 days but this was because my knee would not allow me to go up some steps.  Once they strapped it I was fine...  I am walking a fair distance each day but have overdone it several times.   I have learnt to listen to my body and not try to do things to quickly.

Three weeks today I had my op and I am still taking meds in the morning, lunch time I just take paracetamol and in the evening before bed I take Tramadol and Naproxin....

Good luck and keep in touch xx

Hi Elaine, thanks for the info, love to keep in touch as we go along. Still haven't had my apt to go in yet, but nice to know someone who has gone through same as me. Do you know what type of hip replacements that they used on you, as I believe there are more than 1? I am hoping to start off with a general, then maybe an epidural later, as that will help with pain. Did you have to have the dreaded Warfarin injections, as I am needle phobic & am hoping to have tablets instead? Hope you are keeping well. Speak to you soon.

My second surgery I went in the afternoon on a Thursday again surgery was scheduled for 4 pm and was released to a inpatient rehab on a Saturday around 2 pm. So sorry to hear about your misfortune of getting an infection! Hope you continue to heal! 🤓 LD

Thanks Annette. I think I need to read up in the different types of incision, as I have no idea what mine is classed as. I know I have a scar on the outside of my left hip, but other than that I have no idea.

I'm in the US.  Vermont, to be exact.  Surgery was 8 am Wednesday August 10.   They wanted to send me home Friday afternoon but I was still in a lot of pain and battling nausea so I ended up,going home Saturday morning.   3 weeks out and up to walking a mile a day with zero pain!

great Helen, what type of incision, anterior? Keep up the good work!

Side incision...posterior approach.   It's quite an amazing thing.....considering the brutality of the surgery

That is good news in the pain. I still have a little around where the incision was made, but only really noticeable if I lay on it. It will be three weeks on Saturday for me.
