THR same day surgery

Hi i had THR 9 days ago, it was done in a surgery center instead of hospital.

I checked in at 6:30am, surgery started 7:30, I was in recovery by 9:20 and being WALKED out the door by 11:40! It was absolutely the worst experience ever.

I had my other hip replaced 3 1/2 years ago with the same doctor but at the time it was one night in the hospital. He now does out patient when he can due to less chance of infection. I was a same day candidate because I'm fairly young (53) and healthy. The pain I was in when they got me up and walked me out was excruciating. The first 2 days at home were also a challenge.

I'm wondering what other peoples experience with same day hip replacement surgery was like.

I had a THR in December followed by 4 nights in hospital and constantly checked for clots and to make sure my body was ok - and i am healthy. What on earth is that about? You poor thing. I am now 7 weeks down the road - had absolutely no pain other than the discomfort of an operation. I am now walking can move exactly like I used to - feel wonderful and my hip socket had a hole in it and the femur had imploded - so it was pretty tough. I paid for my surgery and i am really glad i did - usually i would go NHS but no more. You need at least one overnight just to stabilise the body and then checks such as an xray on the hip before you leave so you can see the state of the THR - and basically so you have a reference point. I don;t know where you had the op but really go back and writie to the head of the hospital - you should not be in that much pain.

i think the worst part was i had my other hip done 3 1/2 years ago and stayed overnight in the hospital so I know how much better it can be. The first time I had no pain.

I know that they do this for reducing the costs, but it becomes absurd to let a patient with THR to go home the same day. I had a double THR (in one intervention) and I cannot imagine how I could have survived at home! The first 2 days were very difficult and their help in hospital - with the bathroom, physiotherapy, painkillers, advices were extremely important! Where are you, in USA?

First off, I am so sorry you were treated so poorly! They shouldn' t have sent you home in pain.

I was apprehensive about it, but, I had same day surgery THR on 11/22/19. My surgery was SuperPath and I decided on out patient for the same reasons as you, less chance of infection.

I has a positive experience. I went in at 6:00 and was out around 3:00. I woke up in pain and was given pain meds right away twice. Then, I walked, the surgeon came in and watched. Then the nurse brought in Chik-Fil-A. I don't eat meat, so she exchanged it for a Jimmie John sub, chips & soda.

When I got home the home health nurse was there, assessed me and set up PT for the next day. I had a home health nurse and in home PT 3x per week for 2 weeks.

My experience couldn't have been different from yours. Please send a letter to your out patient facility and let them know there can do much better.

I have already let them know my feelings on how I was treated 😃 the speed that they moved me out was crazy to me! When I let the nurse know I was in pain, I was given 1 percocet and I did not see my doctor at all after my surgery! The nurse could get me up and walking so I was good to go home! I'll see my doctor at my 6 week check up

Did they take a post-surgery x-ray before they discharged you? I believe this is standard procedure.

So sorry this has happened to you. Make sure to get a prescription for physical therapy. It really helped me, and was a great support.

I did not have x-ray before discharge. I am doing great now, doing physical therapy and almost done with the cane. My only problem was the first 2 days. thank you!

i havent had a TRH as ibroke my hip from a fall but had the femur repairer with metal rod and screws. I was in hospital for 5 days and the pain was bad. I was disabled before i had the fall so my recovery is very slow. Im now 3 weeks post op and still cant manage lots of things i just about manage walking with my rollator. Ive never heard of this type of hip replacement where your released the same day. I really feel for you and wish you a speedy recovery. I wish my recovery was going better as getting me down and im also dealing with the added stress of finding out a few days ago that my Son has cancer. Ive felt like giving up lately as i cant see the end of this long dark tunnel.

Did your surgeon describe the pros and cons to you regarding same day surgery before-hand?I was in the hospital for a day and a half with both my hip replacements.

Are you in the U.S.? With medical care in U.S. these days, there is a push to keep costs down, and to do more at outpatient centers, especially if the surgeon has a stake in the profits of the outpatient center.

I think that since hip replacement is major surgery, it should be done in a hospital. Also, my surgeon, nurse and PT and OT in the hospital had to sign off that I was ready for discharge. I can't imagine the outpatient surgeon releasing you with so much pain after the same day surgery. I wouldn't hesitate discussing your experience with your surgeon.

Thanks for your reply, I am in the US and pay crazy amounts for insurance! I have to assume that my post -op nurse was the one who signed off on my being discharged, since she was the only person I saw after surgery!

I am looking forward to talking to my doctor at my 6 week check-up

I had surgery in the morning and I was up walking later in the day. I had one session of physical therapy and I went home the next day. I couldn't wait to leave the hospital. You should not have been in that much pain if pain medication was dispensed appropriately. And I'm much older than you.

I had both hips done in 2019. Right hip January and left hip November 12th. They were both same day surgery. I had no issues to speak of. I don't take any narcotics they make me deathly ill. My right hip was pretty easy, but this other has been awful. My left knee has been killing me for 10 weeks and I am still in acute pain. I have so much anxiety I had to see someone today for it @ Kaiser.

I loved same day and to be home. My bedroom is upstairs and that was not an issue.

I hope you are feeling a little better.

i am doing very well now. the first 2 days were bad with throwing up and being dizzy.

i also have a lot of pain in my knee. This also happened when i had my other hip done. My doctor told me they Basically sprained the knee because they have to twist it to get the hip in. I have difficulty doing some of my physical therapy because of my knee more then my hip.
