threadworm questions and answers

Hi to all.

Here is my stori

About 6 months ago my daughter caught up threadworm from school, this is a not the issue however as she was treated and cleared within a fortnight.

I on the other hand took the medication mebendazole several times eventually taking it every day for a week, but to no relief.

After doing a lot of reading I upped the cleaning tenfold and took a papayaseed smoothie recipe that I found. This worked and for 2 weeks they were gone. But they came back in great numbers after that.they wouldn't bother so much but my children have been reinfected

So I tried taking the smoothie again and it killed some off but not all. So after a week I started taking de with a bulb of garlic every morning on an empty stomach. I got a lot of die off symptoms but that was 3 weeks ago and they are still laying eggs. They are in less numbers but still there. I put the de all over my bum at night which means I get a better night sleep.

I am currently eating a high fibre low sugar diet mostlyalkaline foods. I also take a papaya seed smoothie daily plus garlic and lots of de as well as cayenne pepper apple cider vinegar oregano vvitamins especially vitamin c.

The problem is they have moved. I can feel them in my legs and arms. I put tea tree oil all over my neck and nose at night to stop them going further than that. My question is should I stop the assault of and tempt them back only to kill them all of when they come back, or keep up the attack.

And don't even mention doctors to me they have been utterly useless saying just keep taking the mebendazole, or you will have to just learn to live with it. They think I'm delutional , they have sent me to a psychiatrist and they called social services saying that I was giving medication to my kids for no good reason and had ocd bollocks I could punch the doctor. If I am delusional then how come I've lost 3 stone was not big anyway bladder a lot weakerbloated stomach cramps I could go on, am I imagining that.

Anyway

Rant over I have learnt a few things.

Garlic kills of the eggs and I think it works better than cloves

I tested the de on them and I think it works better on the younger ones, just hatched worms die as soon as they wriggle older worms can get further.

I also read about using a dust mask but I could still feel them in my hair and ears so now I wear a pair of tights over my head while doing the washing changing beds and hoovering.

I must state that the meds do work for 90% of people.

However, I am amazed at the amount of ignorant people when it comes to this subject, have you read this forum there are about 20 people who say the meds didn,t work for them. That's just in the UK I have talked to people in USA also having same issues. I previously spoke to a infection control

Doctor who said they can be resistant in some people.

    Wikipedia mebendazole

This article can confirm that some parasites can migrate out of the colon if in large numbers to escape the drug or similar. They can not survive there however and travel back up at night. They might not generally causeweight lose but when there are a hell of a lot in there they can. Also the stress and lack of sleep contribute to this.

My kids have never had nits and if they can not hatch outside the body then you would not get retro infection when they go back up once hatched. I agree there is no need for mothers to worry as I imagine the meds will work in the majority of children as there digestive systems and immunity are generally strong, but in adults it can be ineffective as so many people on this forum can confirm.

I have used products around my anus at night. The best being the De. I feel them come out lay eggs but before I would get the horrid wriggling a few hours later now they hatch and as soon as they wriggle the die

I do see them regularly wriggling especially when I started using de there were loads of them coming out dead and alive wriggling like mad.

Piles and dry skin do not move across your skin or crawl into your ears

Im new to this site but after experiencing threadworms for two years without any solution i felt i had to write in. I have a daughter whos now five and she had threadworms for two years and also had passed them on to me due to bed sharing> First of all the doctors were saying she had thrush even though the results came back negative and the after seeing a peadatricion we were told that the itching was prob down to hygeine even though i asked numerous times for her to be checked for threadworms!!! anyway the upshot of it all is that after 25 does of ovex, two hundred pounds on anti parasite treatment i was at my wits end. So after some research i found a parasite specialist in great ormond street which we paid for privately and guess what he rid us of the worms within a week. We were prescribed albendazole and mebondazole (there is a difference) my daughter was on two hundred milligrams a week and myself on four hundred we stayed on it for three months in case of re auto infection and carried on with the usual hygiene measures but that was last july and weve not had them since. this doctor is amazing and totally understood that i had turned into a nutcase after two years but has cured every patient he has seen. plesase let me know if anyone needs anymore information i cannot tell you what it feels like to have a worm fre life!!!

Hi Kate, I was so relieved to see your message about the doctor at Great Ormond St and how he helped you and your daughter. Could you make clear exactly what dose you took and how often please? Was it Mebendazole and Albendazole together or separately? Mebendazole 400mg is 4 times the usual dose, and to think I had been worried about whether I should take 200mg! Certainly the 100 mg tablets do almost nothing for me. I should be so grateful for the info,as after 2 years things are getting worse and worse. Thanks,

What wonderful encouraging news.  I have tried so many things without success.  Did your medicine have a brand name.  If I go to my doc, what do I ask her to prescribe?  What is your doc's name?  I'm an adult so he wouldn't see me but perhaps I can quote him to my doc.  Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

      Hi Kay

I have had similar problems and was wondering exactly the same as you. Did you contact Dr Novelli directly? I was going to email him but wasn't sure whether he would treat adults or only dealt with children.

Hi Jenny.  No, I havenet contacted the doctor recommened by Kate as I have my doubts that he would respond to a random e-mail from a stranger.  So, as it is  albendazole which seems to have done the trick, I am thinking of making an appointment with my doctr  to see if she will prescribe some for me.  As to the quatity and ratio I don't know, did you get a reply from Kate about this?  Have you noticed it is mainly women who are having trouble getting rid of the littled b...*s , Im wondering if that is because they find a nice little home in our vaginas where all the poison we take to kill them doesn't reach them, they just pop out now and then to lay eggs.  Apparently albendazole klls off the larvae once they have just hatched so they dont have a chance to recreate.  I'm in the middle of a course of humaworm and if I don't have any luck with that I will  try and convince my doc to give me a prescription.  If you beat me to it, please will you let me know how you get on?  Thanks.

Have you already visited your GP Kay? I know I should really go and see mine but was put off as I wasn't sure what kind of respose I would get. I have taken bucket loads of mebendazole which simply isn't working. I have been searching for pripsen powder but it looks like it is discontinued and I haven't been able to source any so far. I'm currently trying a variety of herbal treatments but haven't had any luck so far. I have to believe there is a solution to the problem because the thought of having to tolerate this forever is truly depressing!

Hi jenny, no I haven't been to theGP yet as I think they are as much in the dark as we are.  Probably even more so as they wouldn't have done all the research we have.  But I will go and ask for a prescription for albendazole if only I could find the right dos rage to ask for.  Whether she will prescribe it is another matter.

Hi Kate, Is Great Ormond St. in the states?? I'm fighting threadworms, but have finally got my family on board to take the treatment with me. As you know the tests done by the Drs are usually negative no matter how infested a person can be with these things. We are trying somehthing called: Combantrin that paralyzes the little devils and a repeat dose in 2 weeks. Right now I'm having a hard time keeping up on the cleaning part...3 bathrooms; 4 bedrooms and 4 beds to deal with. I'm also folding the sheets off the bed (inside) so the eggs don't shake off or get airborne. I'm washing the pillows at least once a week. I spray the mattresses with Lysol prior to vacuuming them and re-making them with new (clean) sheets and blankets and pillows. I'm using Lysol alot (spray Lysol disinfecting spray). I told everyone in the fam to wipe the toilet seat down with rubbing alcohol before and after each use. I'm wiping all the handles on all the doors twice daily; however, the laudryroom seems to always have a lot of laundry to be done (doing laundry day and night)...so I'm finding it hard to clean it everyday. I'm spraying a lot of Lysol in the laudryroom because of that...plus on the bedroom floors (they're carpeted...unfortunately). It helps me stay on top of things when I'm out of time or too sick (migraines and headaches everyday for years) to stay "on top of them". I'm scared we won't get rid of them this time. I'm concerned my family is not taking it seriously as they haven't any symptoms and have alluded to the fact that I'm probably craazy. Now...my ears are getting extremely itchy...mostly in the left one. The Dr checked them both very carefully. She says everything inside looks fine...the canal and the drum. She wants me to go on a "run" of steroids due to the fact she believes it's my TMJ Syndrome flaring up again. Could be...but I'm not too eager to take steroids...even if it's only for a week in total. Any info would be great. We live in Canada which is why I was originally inquiring of the location of your Dr. that helped you. Thanks so much. Hope you're still "free". Looking forward to having my freedom...(hope you still have yours) and some of my weight back soon. Take care. Thanks again.

Hi crystal, just read your post to kate with interest as I seem to be in the same position as you.  My husband also has no symptoms even though we share a bed and my ears also itch, especially at night.  My worry is that when the itch starts it means that the females have just laid and that some of the eggs may fall out onto my pullow for me to inhale and it starts all over again.  I'm wondering if this is why I'm not getting rid of them.  Great or one street is in London, UK.  I asked my doc for the medicine kate was prescribed but she couldn't do it withiut sending off samples for testing and I am still awaiting the results.  My husband took two doses of the over the counter medicines right at the start but he won't take any more, he thinks it is all in my imagination.  Some people are infected but don't have any symptoms so it could be that he is re infecting me!    Good luck with the medicine you are trying.  We can't get it here so if it works, please let me know and I will see if I can send off for it.  Thanks.

Hi Kay, I've never thought of that re the ear situation. However, one never knows. My doctor found nothing in my ear canal or around my drum. Perhaps I am imagining them there. She (my doctor) does seem to think it's my TMJ Syndrome acting up, however, I'm not so sure. Since everybody is home tomorrow night, we're starting on the medicine tomorrw night. My family is doing it just to "humor me" as they say that since the test was negative, it's all in my head...even when I offered to show thema a visual either with their stool...or mine. They're not interested. They're just going to take the medicine to "shut me up". I'll let you know if it works for us. If it does, it's available over-the-counter in Ontario, Canada, so if it does work, I would be more than happy to set you up with some. Will keep you posted. We'll know the result pretty much in two weeks after the 2nd dose. From there, we'll just hope not to get re-infected. BTW, I change our pillow cases every night and our pillows are washed twice per week (they're all maching-washable). Talk to you soon.

Thanks Crystal.  I doubt that two of us can be imagining the ear thing, mine are definitely itching, I can tell you!  They can burrow deep into the ear and nasal cavities so it could be that your doc's probe couldn't get in deep enough.   WhatI do is put some cotton wool in my ears at night to limit  the number of eggs that may fall out onto the pillow.  Thanks so much for the offer of helping me obtain the medicine and I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Hi Kate, I hope you don't mind me sending you a message and I'm not even sure if you will still read this as I am replying to a post you made 11 months ago with regards to threadworms and seeing a private parasite doctor at great ormond street... I have been battling these awful things for two years with my children and myself .... I wondered if you were able to tell me the name of the doctor you saw at great ormond street? And did you and your children stay on medication for three months every day? I hope you get this message xx

hi, where is this doctor so frustrated w this. i read eggs airborne, so confusing. does anyone know if eggs are airborn... and spray for eggs etc... if spraying will actually kill eggs... keep having fuzz on sheets, and various other items when washed & dried. hoping that will stop. also lots of fuzz in lint compartment in dryer etc. have used Borax, vinegar, dawn dish soap when doing laundry. i have 3 cats so, if i spray house, eggs are airborn, and animals can spread eggs if attached to fur as i have read somewhere... any suggestions. sooo frustrating thank you for any suggestions. my fingernails, well, they are so dried out, nd now the shortest they have ever been its awful.
