Throat mucous as an anxiety symptom

Posted , 46 users are following.

H,i I have been on this forum before I suffer from Anxiety, especially anything to do with health.  I am seeing a councillor.  I have many medical problems the worst being IBS, quiet at the moment, Arthritis, have been in pain all summer, now due to see consultant next week.  More recently have had trouble with bad throat and awful mucous at one 24/7.  I have been given omeprazole an anti acid.  Reading on line yesterday I saw

information saying that throat mucous can be caused be anxiety.  My question is does anyone here suffer with it, what are your symptoms and how did you treat it. My Gp says it is probably silent reflux and I realise anxiety makes everything worse. Would love you hear from anyone affected by this.  Thanks

I find a little bit of warm lemon juice &water swolled very slowly helps break up thin mucus. While I also get anxious when doing research on health issues. I will take notes on the positive things I read about that I already do or know about.

      Hi Ashley,

Anxiety can restrict your airway/ throat and excess mucus.

This could be why your throats feels odd at times.

However, best just get it checked out and put your mind at rest. Otherwise it's just making you more anxious- possibly for no good reason, which causes more symptoms. - vicious circle.

Go get it checked and get peace of mind.

I get stress/anxiety and start coughing, overheating, rapid heartbeat etc

I dispute with others that it's soley due to the airway tightening.

Although that is a factor and may be the sole factor for some, it's not for others.

Many people can feel and actually hear catarrh rattling in their upper respiratory area- chest.

The production increases at times of stress, for many people.

Ventalin inhaler is very helpful for these symptoms. As it opens the airway and it helps oxygen uptake to be restored  and reduces the panic and symptoms.

This is happening to me now, have sinusitis but where it goes down it feels like I'm choking so I keep coughing and feel my throat closes up which makes it worse. Go into full blown panic and cant breath.

Our anxiety comes from the fact that we can't breath well, its not the other way around. Its a biological reaction, we first have excessive mucus then we feel like we are drowning and then feel anxious.

And people judge us a lot for this, for being too anxious. Very few people knows how it feels to have these symptoms. What's worse they take place in such a obscure way other people cannot notice, only us. These symptoms may be strong enough to make a person more introverted than normal, and less interested in socializing.

Allergy doctors seems too ignorant to deal with this issue, and just take our money and give us expensive and useless medication.

So far I think the only possible solution for the problem is surgery with a competent surgeon, which I was not lucky to have when I had mine surgery in nose to see if mucus would stop building up in my forehead all the time 24/7.

I am also a singer and have had post nasal drip for over 2 years which sits in my throat and gets in the way of the vocal chords closing so it affects my singing, really badly sometimes. I've tried acupuncture, homeopathy, cranial Osteopathy and really cleaned up my diet, no diary, no wheat (as both can cause mucus build up). If you have diary I would try cutting that out completely. I also have acid reflux because of a small hiatus hernia and I take a prescribed medication to suppress the stomach acid. I would suggest you get an allergy test for food you might be intolerant to as this can also cause mucus if you're eating them on a regular basis. Good luck.

A couple of ideas. Regarding IBS, have you considered leaky gut, Celiac disease, food allergy, i.e. wheat, gluten intolerance or lactose intolerance...

Regarding arthritis, inflammation can make it worse. Try getting off nightshade foods like tomato, potato, eggplant and anything else you think may cause inflammation.

Lakewinds Apple Juice 2.0.  I warm it and often use BRAGG's apple cider vinegar (for gallbladder issues and I think it helps other things too)- just a teaspoon or so added to the apple juice and that has helped my throat immensely.

I use a 1/4 tab of Ativan (which has helped with my food/anxiety/panic attack reactions).

Also, a good thing for inflammation is 'golden tea' - I don't use pepper as recipes can call for as catalyst, if memory serves. I use, turmeric spice and make a paste by adding water the heating. Store in fridge. Add 1/2 t. and warm with milk or coconut milk or almond milk... I use Date Lady date syrup as a sweetener. Avoid sugar like the plague if you want to feel better all around.

I think the mucous I suffer is aggravated/caused by anxiety/clearing throat and allergies- outdoor and food.

I used Zantac until my reflux/acid cords/throat got under control.

Finally, you may wish to research VCD: Vocal Cord Dysfunction and Eosinophilic esophagitis.

I cannot stress how much the Lakewinds Apple Juice 2.0 has helped me! Along with getting off wheat/gluten and using the Ativan as needed (very small dose) after many trips to ER. The med must be monitored by physician, but that is fine and well as it can help so very much. Best to you.

Let me add: I use an inhaler too. Mucous seems to bother me when that is needed. It is a learning process to discern what thing is going on when and the anxiety exacerbates all of it and is causal for throat issues in and of itself.

At last medical visit I had I was told that Clariton and Flonase might be of use to me. I have used both in the past successfully. A good deal of back of the throat crawly type feelings seem to occur when I'm in my vehicle. Switching up my hair products and/or going without helps I think (eliminating wheat/wheat derivatives, for example, along with other allergens). I think the fumes on the road make things hard for me mucous-wise...

That was a load of info; perhaps some of it may help.

    God bless you.

PS - At that last medical visit they may have recommended Pescid- I think it was- like a 2 week regimen. I don't know the name for sure.

Not holding our Yorkie on my lap and keeping the floors mopped seems to help allergies/mucous and be sure (if you have allergies) that you put plastic covers over pillows and mattress to keep dust mite activity away from you. I'm very allergic to dust mites... carpet is bad for me as I get so stuffed/sneezy, etc.. Air purifier runs when I sleep. We had our vents professionally cleaned (should do it more often) and changing air filters can help  allergies.

PSS Checking with your doctor on any and all meds/over-the-counter is best... as you probably know smile
