Thrush and inflamation

Hi seem to be posting on this all the time , so many questions ! On thurs I woke up feeling a bit more itchy , I don't usually have much itching so I checked and had white curdly discharge so I guessed I had thrush , doc took swab to clarify , no results yet , she gave me the one use oral tab for thrush and canesten cream with steroid in it and said to stop my dermovate until thrush is cleared , anyway since Friday the curdly discharge has cleared but I'm red raw and the canesten burns a lot when I apply and for a long time after , I'm thinking I'm inflamed as I came off the dermovate , should I still be using it along with the canesten and if so which do I apply first , God this condition seems to have spread over my whole vestibule area since I started the dermovate in June , I only had inflamation in a couple of spots now it's the whole skin on the vestibule , can't seem to come to terms with it , finding things really hard to accept ,crying a lot of the time over it 😥

If I were you, I would not use Canesten nor Dermovate for a couple of weeks. I have really bad experiences from Canesten and LS (it hurts a lot) and the oral tablet (fluconazole?) should be enough to treat thrush. After a couple of weeks, you can probably continue with Dermovate. It seems like you are reacting towards something and that the affected area needs a break. But, of course it might be wise to call the doctor for his/hers opinion as well. I hope you will feel better soon!

Thank you ullis this condition is so upsetting , you don't know what you are doing to make it better or worse , just wish I could get a handle on it and start to improve , it seems the dermovate use predisposes us to thrush and the cream for thrush burns the skin , jez !! But you may be right my skin seems to have all flared up since using the canesten ! I'm burning more now than I was on Friday when I went to the docs , thanks for advice

I feel for you and had more or less the same experiences when I was diagnosed many years ago in my early twenties. It is a struggle but manageable. You will learn what works for you. My LS gives me less trouble when I stay off steroids and just use Vaseline or zinkpaste. But you should definitely give Dermovate a chance since it might really improve your condition. Otherwise, try to stay positive - I know it is hard - and do things that make you happy. Stay sexually active if you can. It will prevent adhesions, but use a lot of lubrication. If you feel uncomfortable with telling your partner the whole story, you can just say that you are a bit sensitive down there or say nothing. You will learn to live with it. Be kind to yourself!

Thanks ulis my partner and I are together 23 yrs and he's such a great support and sympathises , I just worry in time will he get fed up with all of this if it affects intimacy in the long term 😪

My experience is that coconut oil took care of many things down there.  It has anti bacterial and anti fungus qualities built in.  When having sex I also use it to both lubricate my partner and myself.  I also use a fluid form of coconut oil for my dilation.  I've used other 'stuff' before, but not at all pleasant.

For suppressing LS you will have to use globetasol/dermovate , according to how your doctor prescribed it.  Keep talking with your doctor about your discomfort though.  He/she needs to know.  Together you may be able to figure out a 'fit for you' treatment.

And yes, there is another part of LS that we don't talk about too much - the grieving period over lost vitality, lost enjoyment over intercourse, loss of some part of your self esteem. Cry!  It's okay, there is a lot you have to figure out within yourself.

Nothing like a good cry Wigster - but you will get there with improvement and experimentation with the positive things you can do.

I was diag. little over 2 months now, and I had the same experience when I first started using steroid.  I was red, raw, swollen all over.  My gyn. told me to use clob twice daily.  I just couldn't do it. I was much worse. I cried and was depressed because I believed I would be like that forever.  I read that we need the steroid for the rest of our lives, so I  knew that I would get either get worse with the LS or I would stay inflammed and hurt forever. But to get and get rid of the inflammation,  I decreased the clob to every other day for a few days and then two times a week and then I got off.  When I decreased the steroid, the infammation began getting better.  I use a lot of emul oil. I've tried other oils, but I like Emul better. I believe I could use the clob two or three times weekly without getting inflammed, but I wanted to wait until I saw the specialist. Like you I feel I can't get on top of it. Two days ago I started with the itch, I was itching more than I had in the past so I broke down and used a little clob.  I do need the steroid but I have to control the inflammation it causes too.  I get so tired of trying different things.  I miss the days when I would go wee, wipe, get up and that was it.  The care takes a lot of time.. trying new things, the mechanics of it all.  It is very stressful and sometimes after a good cry, I am ready to get up and start again.  When I get like that, it helps me to think of my mother. She had MS...her left side was paralized.  To go to the bathroom, she had to slide off the bed onto the wheelchair.  Try and stay positive.  It will get better...

Thanks judy it is all very hard to accept but I know things could be worse , I think it's hard to come to terms with anything that causes us pain , but like your mum havin Ms that is much worse so we just have to get on with it , I do cry and when I'm maybe not as sore the next day I get a glimmer of hope that this won't be so bad , then bang sore again the next day !! I'm only using the steroid since June so still trying to work out what helps , iv found so far I'm good using it 2 a day it's when I have to cut down my burning comes back and I think the canes ten cream has made me so much rawer , iv stopped the canes ten today to give my skin a break , it's very raw and stinging to touch , I do miss going to the toilet wiping and off I go now I'm carrying bottles of water , coconut oil ( which has ruined a few of my leather bags spilling out of the pot ) , onwards and upwards !!

Hallo Wigster... Firstly I don't believe we should all follow a standard program as each of us have different functioning bodies and varying degrees of LS.

Too much inflammation can't be a good thing.

You could try a more natural approach to calm things down before trying with a steroid again and then reintroduce gradually until you find what suits.

You may eventually do better with a lower potency steroid.

Cut out stimulants and try an anti-inflammatory diet with more alkaline producing food and less acid forming food.

Start the day with freshly squeezed lemon juice in warm water.

Personally, after initially using the steroid I decided the set routine advice was not for me and steroids alter ph making one more prone to yeast infections.

I don't use chemical applications and prefer a less harsh approach.

To keep inflammation at bay I soak regularly in sea salt disolved in cooled boiled water solution and I don't add anything else.( more of anything does not equal better).

Sea salt soaking is soothing moisturising and anti-inflammatory.( must be sea salt not table salt).

I pat dry then smear a small amount of aquaphor barrier to keep in the moisture.

I have tried several barrier creams but find aquaphor a good barrier and only use a small amount.

If petroleum base is not suitable then a natural bees wax cream would be good.

Avoiding chemical preparations is kinder to skin.

I seem to be stabilized at the momement without itch or inflammation so this is working for me.

If you get another yeast infecting you could try something many yeast sufferers have had success with and that is using live probiotic yougurt.

Soak the tampon in live probiotic yogurt then insert.

I am not talking from experience as I have never had a yeast infection in my life but apparently it is a successful alternative to drugs.

Whatever you decide to do I hope it improves your condition.

    Hiya,

To get the thrush under control cut out sugar, dairy and gluten (this helps the LS a lot too!) and also take acidiphilus - strong one, maybe 20 to 20 billion a day. they say the chiller cabinet ones are the best. You can get these from a health food shop.

    Good luck xxx

Great advice. I remember seeing a herbalist when i had a UTI (urinary tract infection). I was surprised when she recommended omitting sugar  from my diet and sugar forming alcohols and grains, such as bread and cereals and that was all. No complex herbs or other treatment. I was amazed. And it worked!

I recall very recently somebody posting an info sheet on this site which had been prepared by a gynaecologist who specialised in LS and had just returned from the first major LS conference.  One of the recommendations for treatment was to use basic Vaseline between steroid applications.  I went straight out and bought a pot.  It has worked very well for me, particularly around the anal/buttock area where it has prevented irritation.  Just wish I could remember where the info sheet is as I should have printed a copy off.  If the person who posted it is reading this, please re-direct me!

Hi Kathleen...Seems to be mixed advice on Vaseline. It would be hard to beat as a complete skin barrier and is often recommended as a cheap solution but it does have opposition from those who believes it can hold bacteria.

I have used Vaseline and have no worries if it is used in a clean environment.

I also like Aquaphor which is like a thick vaseline and contains 41% petrolatum, Vaseline is 100% petrolatum.

Pure Vaseline is much cheaper than Aquaphor!

Vaseline works very well for me and isalso recommended by my dermatologist.

Yeap Ullis, I reckon good old Vaseline has been around long enough to have proved it's worth.

I shall not be buying Aquaphor again, although I like it I am not so sure it is worth the extra expense.

I am trying a few healing preparations at the moment to test out their individual claims but if I don't find anything to be superior I will be happy to fall back on Vaseline as an inexpensive no frills fix.
