Time of work after hysterectomy?

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi Ladies,

I'm due to have a abdominal hysterectomy with a vertical cut due to large fibroids in December. I know everybody is different, but I was wondering how long most of you have stayed of work for? I'm a bit worried as it is advised not to do any lifting for a long time, but my work involves a lot of heavy lifting and being on my feet all day long.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

    Hi trish

I had 8 weeks off work and went back on phased return where I have been working reduced hours for a month to ease me back. You definitely will know when the time comes if your ready or not but I would say if you can don't over do it you will need time for you body to get back to normal.  Hope this helps all the best.

hi Trish I had a vaginal hysterectomy done in September this year and I've taken 3 months off. My job entails heavy lifting and told I couldn't go back for 3months. The doctor has told me I still have to be careful not to lift anything after this time. I'm very bored at home but your health come first. I feel like I can do anything but stop myself

It's a big operation and you're still need to take things easy for a long time x

    Hi

I had an horizontal  TAH done mid Sept.

I had 8 weeks off and 2 week phased return.

However my job involves very little heavy lifting.

I would say go for 3 months and then review .

I am nearly 5 weeks post FAH & still find it hard to bend and do not carry anything heavy. I was hoping to return to work after six weeks, I'm not sure at this stage if that is going to be possible,  I guess I am lucky that my job doesn't involve any heavy lifting.

It it is important to take advice from your specialist.

    Take care

    Hi Trish,

I had a total vertical abdominal hysterectomy on 1st October, so I am 7 weeks post op and I am still taking it easy. Luckily I haven't got work to go back to, but I wouldn't go back until at least 8 weeks. In fact I would give yourself 3 months because your job involves lifting. Your abdominal scar may be healed on the outside, but that does not mean that your healed completely on the inside. Best to be on the safe side so you don't get any set backs. I hope all goes well for you. Sharon

    Hi Trish,

I forgot to mention that I also had large fibroids (size of a 26 week pregnancy). It was a difficult operation, so my surgeon told me to take it really easy.

    Hi Trish smile

Ok... I JUST had an abdominal hysterectomy (FULL VERTICAL CUT DOWN LOWER BELLY) last Monday.  It is 9 days later today... I had 22 staples removed 2 days ago.. AND BOY AM I SORE!

    Very red inbetween some areas.

My dr. told me I could drive today (9 days later), but I am NOT to work for 8 weeks.  She is not budging on this.  I had a 6 lb. fibroid tumor removed, plus uterus, cervix, and 1 ovary.  I am 52, and was in good health, even taught a part time dance class.

I went out today, 6 hours.. BAD BAD decision.. I am very sore now.

You WILL be out for a good 7-8 weeks, especially if you have the giant fibroids.  Even with a desk job (I work at a jr. high school), she told me NO.. I would be sleeping at my desk by mid-day.  It will wipe you out a bit.. there will be GOOD days and some SORE/TIRED days... I am still having the sore/tired days.. but being Italian I am stubborn.. I need to listen!

I actually watched it on uTube... I needed to know what was going to happen.

Oh... try not to LAUGH, COUGH, or SNEEZE.. oh boy... it still is sore for me!

All the best Trish...you can do it girl!

Hugs from Mary in CT smile

You were brave to watch it on uTube, I'm too squeamish!  I am not allowed to drive for full 6 weeks! I walk a couple of times a day and been to supermarket and chemist with hubby but that's as far as I have ventured so far!  Are you getting hot flushes?

Oh I love the horror and gore movies...figured this would be just like that...

You know... I saw 2 friends today, that saw me out.. they were like GO HOME, REST.. my dr. told me 2 days ago.. "you can drive", "no long road trips"... I want to listen to my dr., but all the advice I'm getting is NO.. NOT YET..  I am VERY sore tonight, alot of up and down from my Hummer.. too high.  Staying in tomorrow, maybe the next day too..

Did you have that CONSTANT sore pain??? I can't stand it.. And sleeping is horrible, as I am a side sleeper sad

      Hi again Debbie..

I forgot to add... NO.. NO HOT FLASHES.. My doctor was able to leave "one" ovary.. She told me that one ovary can act like TWO!  So no hot flashes...thank god smile

I am nearly 54 and have been suffering hot flushes for 2 1/2 yrs now, I don't sleep more than 2 hrs without waking with a hot flush so never get a good nights sleep!  I had gone on Livial to assist with  menopause and that is when  a tumour was detected!

Yes I describe it like having been hit in the stomach by a small elephant!  Feels like extreme bruising and still uncomfortable to go to the toilet! It might be ipthe internal stitches? Oh the joys of being a woman eh?  You really need to lie on your bed, prop yourself up with pillows and watch movies, TV series, DVDs etc, I had to give in and do just that. Against my wishes my husband and son installed a tv in our bedroom while I was in hospital! But I am grateful they did now.

I'm in Australia, where are you?

IS YOUR LINE REALLYTHICK, FEELS LIKE AN OLD STRAIGHT TELEPHONE CORD; LOL... FEELS WIERD!  MY DR. SAID IT WILL GO DOWN AND LEAVE JUST A FINE RED LINE...

I GUESS A GOOD 6 MONTHS OR SO UNTIL...

BUT NO ONE KNOWS WHAT WE WENT THROUGH, JUST THOSE THAT HAD IT!
