I hope this works this is the best concise video I've seen so far

no frills about 10 mins long. It will help understand what you are going through.

warning not for the feint hearted but I would recommend it.

If this link doesn't work I found it be looking at Google  under 'how a total knee replacement works' go to the video search and click on total knee replacement part 2

I was surprised at the ammount of people in the theatre for my operation,  I counted about seven or eight but I don't know what they all did.  smile

In theatre during surgery like this you have the 1,surgeon 2,assistant 3,scrub nurse who has sorted instruments out and hands them to the surgeon 4, swab nurse who keeps check of the swabs making sure none are left in 5,anaesthetist 6,runner 7, students nurses and med juniors/students So there could be 7- 9 people in theatre. Not forgetting people outside who pack the theatre packs with instruments, CSSC who sterilize the packs, ported who get them to theatre, Staff who check & clean instruments after surgery. This is the least amount of people so althouh its free on NHS the estimated cost of £12,000 is reasonable

I didn't feel a thing for my spinal block.

It was best experience ever for surgery.

I felt warm and happy during the surgery and no pain after for about 24hrs by which time i was on meds

hi Suzi im so glad to hear this i have honestly only heard positive things about a spinal on here so im sure i will go with it >) have heard its better afterwards too thank you my minds sorted now Tina x

Hi Tina, I was recommended for the spinal block, and wasn't told until afterwards that it didn't work, they just pressed on using a general anesthetic. I am not trying to worry you but thought you ought to know it doesn't work for everyone. The outcome was no differrent and I felt fully awake 2 to 3 minutes after coming to and with painkillers being administered intravevnously I did't feel a thing. Good luck with your procedure Regards Paul.

Hi Paul Thank you and dont worry i know your not trying to worry me makes it better actually that i know you wasnt aware of a problem during the op so i know everything is safe but that was one of my worries i know its slighty different but when i had my first son i had an epidural had to have it a few times as it only took one side and was no good for me so this did cross my mind too but as you say you wasnt aware so they know what they are doing i may seem strange but i love the feeling of going under when you count back feel like its the only time i really get a sleep ha strange i know but im glad you commented makes me happier to know they can still procede without me being made aware in case of problems hope your now on the mend Thank you Tina x

Hi yes I had a drain till next day and no surgical stockings.  No big bandage just dressing which was changed to a waterproof dressing. I was the same about spinsl, didn't want it but after talking with doctor went for it.  I did wake up during op but fell back to sleepy. They were aware that I didn't want to be awake and assured me I wouldn't be.

      Hi Tina,

I had the spinal and it didn't work on me either. Still had feeling in my leg so they gave me a general as well. The last thing I remember was a mask being placed over my face. Felt like seconds later I woke in the recovery room with the op complete. Not a single thing to worry about and the support you get through out recovery from the folks here is a true blessing

I had no stockings either. Surgeon didn't like them.

Just as  they lifted me off the op table to a stretcher i heard the surgeon day 'oh bugger its fallen off' i looked  at him in alarm and he patted me on the arm and said 'it's ok. Not the leg. Just the drainage tube!' so i never had one and have a tiny scar where it was. Almost gone now.

Hot here tonight too. Fan on. No bed  clothes!

Best wishes Tina.  I won't say its easy its not.

But each day is one towards being pain free and well. Be prepared for down days. You're allowed to feel sorry for yourself. I did often. I resented my new knee for a week or two. I missed part of me! But I'm over it now and quite like it.

Daft  as it seems i said goodbye to the old one before the op - sort of  lighthearted (but meant it)

Stay positive and let us know how you are.

      The diary helps smile
