TKR - with spinal & nerve block

Posted , 10 users are following.

8weeks out, and knee is doing well, but the nerve block was messed up, the nerve was severed, and my leg from the knee down is numb! Now my foot feels like it is burning , and there are now electric shocks that happen. The dr. Who performed the nerve block has even called me at home to see how I am doing. The medicine my surgeon wants me to try is Lyrica, but am having trouble getting it.  This whole process is depressing.

Hi Elaine, please don't get too discouraged, nerves heal at the rate, of 1mm per month so it's a long process.

if your surgeon/doctor has recommended a certain drug, he has weighed up the pros and cons.

ive taken both Lyrica and Gabapentin in the past, with zero side effects

    Good luck.., x

I had TKR 3 years ago and was awake during surgery. I have not had any problem at all. Sorry this has not quite worked out for you.

Take care and keep in touch

I had TKR almost a year ago. I still have nerve pain and numbness in the outside of the lower leg

I have never taken anything for it.

I still can't straighten completely but I guess it's all to be expected given what the op entailed.

Could also try massaging with magnesium oil also tablet form but get the right kind as one type can cause diarrhoea!!

Oh Suzi, a year ago? I hate the idea of the nerve pain and numbness for that long! After only 7 wks there are times I just want to scream!

I had arthroscopic surgery 9 years ago on the same knee and was never able to gain full extension afterward. I am almost to the extension I had prior TKR.

I was denied the Lyrica, by my Health Coverage, they would not tell me why, just to call my dr and ask him.  This is so rediculous, I would think they would have to tell me, now I am waiting to hear from my dr to see if there is something else I can take.  I am so tired of sleeping on the lounge chair, and not being able to wear regular shoes and cloths. Is your numbness still there?  I can't believe you have had this for 1 year already. I think I would go crazy, because I feel like I am at times.

Wy are you sleeping on your lounge chair and not going to bed?

Have you had any physio to your back? The numbness may be comimg from there you know.

You need to be sitting and thn getting up everytwo hours andntaking a couple of steps. Lying in bed stretches the muscle making everything worse according to my physio.

Try massaging the knee with essential oils and also use a TENS machine t interrupt the pain pathways in your brain. Pls google the mechanism of pain to get a full explanation of this.

I can not stand being in bed with anything touching my leg, sheets, cloths, blankets, plus I have an 88 pound golden retriever who sleeps with us, and I do not want him jumping on me.  I do get up, and walk around, go to the store with my husband, go on walks, and am staring at the gym tomorrow.  My Physical therapist gave me a sheet on the machinery I will be working out with.  I was discharged from PT last week.

      I understand.

Listen Elaine I sleep with a very light covering on my legs, a fleece throw. I am in the UK and leave the heating on 24/7/You could also try a cage over the bed to take the weight of your bedding.

Try the TENS machine.Hydrotherapy, pilates, strenghthening the core muscles with gentle exercises .

Just draw in your abdomen several imes an hour to strengthen the muscles in your lower back. Have you been or on statins, ppi's, antibiotics, beta lockers/ did you have nitrous oxide, aka laughing gas, entonox, clexan4, warfarin, heparin etc, etc all these can irritate the nerves, perhaps you had Marcain?

Elaine, I am the same way right now. I don't want anything touching y scar! Drives me bonkers!! In PT they have taken to spending time rubbing it with various things, such as towels and tissues. I can't stand it and it brings tears to my eyes. They tell me I need to do that frequently myself. Pure torture!

For what reason are you told to rub the sore area?

They day it will desensitize the area. I did put vitamin e oil on a tissue and massage my scar. I was able to tolerate it, but I wasn't pressing very hard.

Thanks for replying I appreciate it. I am feeling very upset at the loss of my brother and was trying to help others by telling them the facts about some nerve pain drugs. I know that they will make their own mind up about taking them It was just that I did not want them to end up with nerve damage and peripheral neuropthy anxiety and  depression through taking unnecessary drugs when there are alternative ways of dealing with pain.

I am genuinely pleased that your treatment is working.

Actually, yes it did. I can tell there has been a slight reduction in my reaction to having my scar touched. Still keeping clothing, bedding, etc off it, but there has been a difference.

I have also had some success with the kinesiology tape. I have heard many say it's a waste of time and money, but for me, it helps.

      Good.

Peotwect the scar from the elements and anything that touches it. Keep gentlymassaging it but keep anything heavy weight wise or irritating away from it.

Protect it with E 45 , That is what the plastic surgeon advised me to do when he removed a pre cancerous mole from underneath my eye.You can hardly see the scar now.

Gentle mssage with a small amount of cream is the secret.

Sure, and I thank you for asking.

We all are at our own stage, and we all have other things happening in our lives.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss! That pain does not do any help for the physical pains we have.

Thank you for your kind words Debz.

I am in a bad place at the moment but have to keep hanging on in there. Having nice popel there such as yourself is a massive help.

      God bless you.

Hey walking wounded, how are you doing?  Try wearing tubi-grip a couple of sizes bigger than necessary. Another oil to try is nutmeg

      Walking wounded....lol....perfect description!

As usual, ups and downs. Toe is hurting more, but I think it is due to so much walking.

Saw my surgeon yesterday and he is very pleased with my knee progress. That was a nice mental boost after feeling so discouraged!

He also said what I am doing for my toe is really all I can do.

So, I clunk around with a post-op shoe on my right foot and try to walk as normal as possible with my new left knee. It really is quite a sight? smile

Bet it it is a sight to see.  You are going to get despondent along the way, even without all that is happening to you.  Having your knee done affects you mentally as well as physically. You'll get good days and bad days and soon before you know it, really really GOOD days, those are the ones to cherish and before too long, you'll be chasing around after everyone by a blue a**** fly. So long as you don't go and break a toe on your left foot x

Thanks Sue! I tell everyone at work I am starting a new fashion trend, and soon they will want to dress just like me! lol

I am holding on to the thought of healing and the GOOD days to come!
