TKR - with spinal & nerve block

Posted , 10 users are following.

8weeks out, and knee is doing well, but the nerve block was messed up, the nerve was severed, and my leg from the knee down is numb! Now my foot feels like it is burning , and there are now electric shocks that happen. The dr. Who performed the nerve block has even called me at home to see how I am doing. The medicine my surgeon wants me to try is Lyrica, but am having trouble getting it.  This whole process is depressing.

The electric shocks are your nerves mending.  It can cause considerable pain.  Lyrica / pregabalin are designed to calm down the signals to your brain.  The nerves are screaming right now (in a weird way, this is good) they are firing all sorts of signals.  The drugs will interfere with the signals.  There is an intravenous one you can have (you have to have it done under a light general as it is so so painful) which bathes the nerves.  Your doctor should write you a prescription or your pain management consultant can recomend the latter.

What you are feeling is normal but the degree differs fron person to person.

    Badger the medics

I have some neurontin but scared of taking it. What shall I do?

If you have them, try them.  Read the info sheet so that you know what to expect regarding side effects.  If after a week or two the effects have not lessened, go back and ask for something different.  A week is normally long enough to know if you can cope taking them. More so if you get dizzy or  can't stop dribbling

I do not do well with any type of anisteshia, even light, so, they try not to give it to me. The spinal was Evan hard, I was the last one to leave the recovery room, and I had the operation at 11:00 am, was sent to my room at 7:45 pm.,after I could move my toes. sad(. I am trying so hard, but am getting so tired of this burning, and shocks.

Some medications can increase drastically the amount of saliva you produce. So much so you actually have it involuntarily coming out of your mouth. Perhaps this is what she is talking about?

Hi Jean, just look up any medication that anyone has recommended on that web site - rxlist. It will tell you if this is a problem to look out for. All said and done sometimes its a trade off. Terrible nerve pain relieved but left with some other side effect. You are the only one to know if s/e is worth it.

Elaine, this is a major problem where forums are concerned, you get one person that has a bad reaction and suddenly the whatever it is a drug a doctor whatever is deemed bad.

if you have chatted with your doctor and he knows your history NO ONE else does then he has decided it's a worth a try, You might have a really good outcome like I did or it may not work so well but how would you know if you don't give it a go?

Neurontin does help nerve pain otherwise the doctors wouldn't use it. I had mine prescribed by a very reputable pain clinic that's all they did was treat various pains from cancer to burns to nerve pain.

Please listen to your doctor and someone who is scaremongering you,

      Mary x

Elaine Neurontin interferes with the pain messages to the brain, sort of like putting a traffic light so it stops the pain messages going to the brain, that's in simple terms.
