Tonsil Stones/Tonsiloliths and Bad Breath

I'm really surprised there isnt anything on this forum about tonsil stones. I've suffered with them for years.
They are little yellow or white stones that form in the cavity of your tonsils. Some people have really big tonsils that have holes and food and saliva mix together and form these stones which smell foul and cause halitosis or bad breath.
People suffer from these for years without knowing what they are. You can cough them up or you sometimes may feel like there is something stuck down the back of your throat.
I used every mouthwash on the UK market and even used to try and poke them out using a cotton wool bud. I googled tonsil stones and found a company in the US called Therabreath and they treat people with tonsil stones. They also have a product range and these products can be used at home.
In the UK, the main company selling these products is inpeakcondition but over here they are called California Breath. Basically the products claim to suffocate the bad bacteria and even though the products are a bit pricey, but tongue is now white and my tonsil stones occur less and less.
There are other products out there too, one is based on pro-biotics (its all about having the right bacteria). Think one of them is called Bliss or Blis12 or something, worth googling.
Hope this helps someone.

It’s common for people with tonsil stones to not even realize they have them. Tonsil stones aren’t always easy to see and they can range from rice-sized to the size of a large grape. Tonsil stones rarely cause larger health complications.

Hi, Here's how I got rid of my tonsil stones, which kept recurring within 2 or 3 days, horrid! Worth saying that you will of course be already practicing good oral health - brushing twice daily, flossing. In my case the nasty tonsil stones were forming from post-nasal drip. I now use Beconase whenever I get a slight sniffle. I learned to take out the tonsil stones using a comedone extractor tool for removing blackheads. It's like a tiny tennis racket without the strings, inexpensive and easily available online. Use a powerful light like the torch on your phone, and a magnifying mirror. Use a q-tip to place some salt on your tongue - it helps to inhibit the gag reflex. The gag reflex is strong and it will take some practice to override it, but the tool can be used to get at the tonsil stones easily without damaging your tonsils. Make sure you get at the ones that may be hiding in the crypts. Once they are all gone, gargle twice daily with Listerine - it's stronger than most mouthwashes and I found my regular mouthwash didn't do the job. Really swish it around the tonsil area where the stones develop. Since doing this, I've had no more recurrences. Nil. What a relief! Hope it helps.

if you kill all oral bacteria the microorganism which are not sensible to mouthwashes will start growing up. Guess what? This wont be bacterias or viruses either. fungus, mushrooms or anything you call them will overpopulated your mouth causing problems.

I suffered from tonsil stones for years, but about 5 years ago I developed a technique to prevent them, and it's worked so well that I figured I should share. First a caveat: I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL AND THIS IS NOT TREATMENT ADVICE. I'm a computer engineer, actually, and high school biology was as far as I got, so take this with a grain of salt - it's most likely dangerous if done incorrectly.
For starters, my doctor told me tonsil stones are caused by a biofilm inhabiting the crypts of your tonsils - biofilms are apparently symbiotic colonies of bacteria that coat surfaces and are the devil to dislodge completely.
So to prevent tonsil stones, you need to find a way to disrupt the biofilm and keep the it under control - you can't really eradicate it, but you can make its life miserable enough that it can't develop tonsil stones.
Preparation:
Treatment:
The important thing is to keep it up every day at first - probably for several weeks. Over time, the number of stones will decrease until it drops to zero - but don't stop! Instead, go to every other day, then every two days, etc. If the tonsil stones come back, increase the frequency until they go away again, and eventually you'll (hopefully) reach an equilibrium where you don't get tonsil stones at all, but aren't having to put a ton of time and energy into treatment - I'm down to about once every 3 weeks (unless I'm fighting a cold or allergies or something, in which case I'll go back to once a week for a while).
It's important to attempt to flush all crypts rather than just the ones with stones - if you skip some it can become whack-a-mole, so just do them all.
Again, no promises and I'm sure there's lots of medical risk here (especially if you mess up and get too violent, or don't sanitize each and every time, etc). But this process has drastically improved the quality of my life, so I felt like I had to at least share the information... good luck!
