Tonsil Stones/Tonsiloliths and Bad Breath

I'm really surprised there isnt anything on this forum about tonsil stones. I've suffered with them for years.
They are little yellow or white stones that form in the cavity of your tonsils. Some people have really big tonsils that have holes and food and saliva mix together and form these stones which smell foul and cause halitosis or bad breath.
People suffer from these for years without knowing what they are. You can cough them up or you sometimes may feel like there is something stuck down the back of your throat.
I used every mouthwash on the UK market and even used to try and poke them out using a cotton wool bud. I googled tonsil stones and found a company in the US called Therabreath and they treat people with tonsil stones. They also have a product range and these products can be used at home.
In the UK, the main company selling these products is inpeakcondition but over here they are called California Breath. Basically the products claim to suffocate the bad bacteria and even though the products are a bit pricey, but tongue is now white and my tonsil stones occur less and less.
There are other products out there too, one is based on pro-biotics (its all about having the right bacteria). Think one of them is called Bliss or Blis12 or something, worth googling.
Hope this helps someone.

I have found that these tonsil stones actually do not form in the tonsils. They form at the back of the tongue with me. I have done some experimenting and did not scrape the back of the tongue for a week and the bad breath and bad taste came back. I have since starterd cleaning again the lingual tonsils at the back of the tongue and low and behold the bad breath/taste has gonje and no more stones. I am now about 6 months free of stones.
my coating at the back was about 2 mil thick and I think you dislodge it when you eat and at night bits break off and are collected by the tonsils. Well thats whats happening with me. Some people are just prone to coated tongues. Doctors are correct. 90% of bad breath is from the tongue. It's getting to the very back of the tongue thats hard to do. Hope this helps. Dairy does breed more bacteria on the tongue hense more coating hence more stones.

I had my tonsil stones but i still have bb. However, i do have a bad taste on the back of my throat. So, how exactly do you clean the lingual tonsils? Do you just push ur toothbrush as far back as u can?
btw.. congrats on ur success

KJJ you might be right but I beg to differ. I have had tonsil stones for over 30 years. I even know someone who was the same. ad his tonsils removed but still gets the stones. This is what got me on my journey of discover.
I never knew how much gunk there actually was at the very rear of the tongue. It gets quite thick as well. I found that in the mornings was the time when most of the stones would surface. The mouth can get dry at night and it forms cracks in the coating at the back of the throat. This debris then is either swallowed or moved to the tonsils. Has anyone ever noticed there poo smells of the same stuff sometimes. Anyway the to answer Pixiepez the bad taste you are getting is from the coating at the very rear of your tongue. You need to buy a tongue scraper and you need to clean the area twice a day plus it also helps irrigating the sinuses as well using the flip method I explained earlier. Salt & baking soda 50/50 mix.
Blast your tonsils out with a waterpix and make sure there are none in them and then start cleaning the very back of the tongue every day. I have not had a stone now for 5-6 months. Stick your tongue out as far as you can and then press down at the very back and have a look.
Hope this helps

I always use a mouthwash that's alcohol free and has chlorine dioxide in. Its anti-bacterial.

Daily tooth brushing along with flossing are the most important actions you can take to ward off bad breath.
Cleaning your tongue can effectively decrease halitosis-causing compounds. Eat Healthy
It's common knowledge that certain foods like raw onion or garlic cause bad breath. Use a mouthrinse after every meal.
Use Traditional Remedies
Home treatments passed down over the years are a good complement to your daily dental care. Herbs such as fennel, for example, have long been used in some cultures as a breath sweetener. Fennel increases saliva production, and contains numerousantibacterial properties, and a few sprigs will do the trick after or between meals.
Fresh breath is a sign of a healthy mouth, and a healthy mouth is often a good indication of your overall health. These home remedies for bad breath are habits you can take up in your own home, and they're integral to fighting and preventing the underlying causes of bad breath.

I agree, drinking water to keep your mouth moist is vital. I drink lemon and ginger tea and try to avoid coffee. As I've mentioned to a few people on here I think dairy is one of the causes of the bacteria that builds up on the tongue. I try to avoid it but I am a really fan of strong flavoured cheese and I can feel my sinuses firing up whilst eating it, then of course the post nasal drip causes bad breath.
Tongue scraping should be part of everyones oral routine and not enough people do it. Its just as important as brushing your teeth.

I would always recommend using a mouthwash that is antibacterial. Look for mouthwashes with chlorine dioxide in them (preferably activated). They are the best at of getting rid of bacteria in the mouth.
Again, please go to your doctor if are concerned.

Hey everyone, how are we all getting on? I've just been rreading through all the posts on here and it's very clear that tonsil stones is still an issue we are battling with ourselves with no help from doctors or dentists. To summarise we all agree that food and drink/allergies play a HUGE part in tonsil stones and though I know that diary and sugar cause my issues, I still continue to consume them, like I mentioned in another post, we often crave the foods we are sensitive to or that are bad for bad breath. I am continuing to tongue scrape and have moved on from using thera breath to using pro fresh as it makes a big difference in my breath for much longer. Also with pro fresh you only need the one mouthwash and tongue scraper, you don't need all the add ons that other companies sell. I have an idea for a website that will help us all, as lets face it no-one else seems to want to help. I will keep you all posted!

Here's how I got rid of my tonsilloliths: I noticed that I had a spot between an unremoved wisdom tooth and molar. i could only get it clean if I used an untratight GUM Proxabrush (tooth pick). Also I started using an electronic toothbrush (Colgate 360 Total) and made sure to scrape my tongue really well with the backside cleaner. Since I started doing this, my tonsil stone problem has pretty much resolved. I try to squeeze out stones but only get a little bit of white fluid. Oh, and I also started using Dr. Bronner's peppermint toothpaste. And, no, I don't work for any of these companies, haha. I hope this works for others.

My life has changed since following this simple daily routine to keep my tonsil stones / bad breath / tonsiloliths at bay:
1. Brush teeth with electric tooth brush for 3 mins
2. Rinse mouth with water
3. Use tongue scraper to remove any build up on the tongue
4. Rinse mouth again with water
5. Mix up a salt water solution. Using a small syringe, squirt the water solution into the small holes and crevices in the tonsils. Take care not to push syringe too far into the tonsil. Take your time to explore the tonsils and familiarize yourself with where tonsil stones build up.
6. Make sure to spit out tonsil stones and rinse mouth well with water in between.
7. Use a mixture of 4 drops mhyrr in a glass of warm water and gargle a mouthful for 15 seconds at a time, taking care to gargle near tonsils.
8. Spit out solution.
This routine has CHANGED MY LIFE. I cannot stress how low cost and effective it is. More than any mouthwash or other "remedies" out there.
Please try it! If you want info as to what syringe, etc. to buy, please message and I will help
