Tonsil Stones/Tonsiloliths and Bad Breath

I'm really surprised there isnt anything on this forum about tonsil stones. I've suffered with them for years.

They are little yellow or white stones that form in the cavity of your tonsils. Some people have really big tonsils that have holes and food and saliva mix together and form these stones which smell foul and cause halitosis or bad breath.

People suffer from these for years without knowing what they are. You can cough them up or you sometimes may feel like there is something stuck down the back of your throat.

I used every mouthwash on the UK market and even used to try and poke them out using a cotton wool bud. I googled tonsil stones and found a company in the US called Therabreath and they treat people with tonsil stones. They also have a product range and these products can be used at home.

In the UK, the main company selling these products is inpeakcondition but over here they are called California Breath. Basically the products claim to suffocate the bad bacteria and even though the products are a bit pricey, but tongue is now white and my tonsil stones occur less and less.

There are other products out there too, one is based on pro-biotics (its all about having the right bacteria). Think one of them is called Bliss or Blis12 or something, worth googling.

Hope this helps someone.

I'm so sad that my breath is probably gonna revert back as soon as I stop taking the medication.

I take my last pill tomorrow. I timed it so that I know i'll have nice fresh breath when I'm out on a Saturday night!

I feel like it's my last day on a nice holiday abroad!!

I'm gonna be lost for ideas when my breath reverts back when off of the antibiotic.

Hi. I have also registered on this site especially to comment on this particular topic..... I have also suffered from tosil stones for years, which are getting worse since I started suffering from post nasal drip.

I saw my ENT specialist yesterday, who point blank refused to offer me a tonsiectomy and told me that a relatively new technique to smooth the tonsils with a laser, smoothing down the crypts in the tonsils, thereby eliminating the tonsil stones wasn't available in my area.

I have also eliminated my tonsil stones by poking objects in my tonsils to release them, but my specialist told me that this makes my problem worse, causing scarring, which develops into more crypts!!

He has recommended a sinus rinse kit to rinse my sinuses out each morning and evening, to clean my sinuses and stop the bacteria build up, which is one of the causes of tonsil stones. I have just ordered a neilmed kit on ebay and am hoping and praying this works. I will let you knwo in due course how successful it is.

Hi! Thanks for sharing this info with us. Very interesting to hear about possible laser treatment. I'm surprised you weren't prescribed the sinus rinse kit if that's his expert recommendation. Maybe the kit is cheaper than the cost of a prescription? My daughter's consultant just gave her small syringe type plastic squiters to use with salt water to squirt up her nose to clean out her sinuses for her chronic sinus headaches so no cost involved (she doesn't suffer PND or tonsil stones.

I'd be really interested to know what your kit contains and really hope it helps you and therefore may also help the rest of us!

      Many thanks.

I am glad I found this thread. I have had this issue for a few years now and it has gotten to the point where I am considering having my tonsils removed, mainly because I typically lean towards a permanent fix to an issue.

My question for all of you, because of these tonsil stones I typically have this feeling that something is in the back of my throat and it causes me to swallow a lot, which in it self is bad becasue I can not burp, so I typically get a stomach ache due to bloating. I went to the ENT doctor and he said it wasn't the stones but it was a post nasal drip causing the throat issue. I tried the nasal spray for a few months and no improvement. Do any of you also have the feeling that there is something in the back of your throat causing you to constanly swallow or clear your throat?

That's great - how have you done it? Please share any advice on what you've tried/used that's helped.

Here is my story of how I cured myself. This may not relate to everone but just me.

I tried everything but kept coughing up these stones. So I tried made a discovery.

I found that these stones were not forming in the tonsils but forming on the very back of the tongue. The tonsils may pick these stones up from time to time but deffo was not forming there.

I had very bad breath in the morning and here is what I did.

I firstly went to the dentist and found I had two bad teeth so I had them removed and my morming breath improved by 90%.

I wanted to rule out sinus problems so I purchased a very cheap nasal irrigator syringe. I started doing the flip and turn sinus irrigation everyday and what I used was a 50/50 mix of salt and bicarb and also mixed in a drop of H2O2. I did this for a week and could breath perfectly. I would also gargle with the rest of the fluid.

I found that I was still getting a bad tast in my throat so I purchased a dental mirror with a light on the end of it.

After cleaning my tongue I stuck my tongue out and then got a spoon and pushed my tongue down so I could see the very back and was horrified to see a ridge of white gunk. This was the breakthrough. I suffer from dry mouth and the back of the tongue is a good breeding ground and this is where the stones were coming from. I cleaned this area with a scraper and wooohoooo bad taste and bad breathn GONE.

If you are wondering about the flip and turn nasal rinse what you do is mix some solution in the syringe and get on your knees. Put your forehead on the floor and gently put some solution up each nostril. Tilt your head closer to your bottom so you can feel the solution working its way to all your sinuses above your eyes. ilt your heah left and right for it to run into both sides. o thjis for about 30 seconds and then let the solution out and blow your nose. You wont regret it.

So Now I will tell you my daily routine.

    1) Mix solution and flip./ turn sinus rinse.

    2) Normal sinus rinse in one nostril and out the other on both sides. Be sure to snook some of it up so it comes out of your mouth to get the throat moving.

    3) Floss. Very important. Smell the floss after doing each tooth. The ones that smell will tell you which ones need looking after more.

4)Irrigate the tonsils with a syringe that has got a bent end. You can buy these online

5)Clean the back of the tongue. The secret here is to get right it the back. It is so far back that you hit a wall when you are cleaning and even after the gag reflex. This is where I was going wrong I wasnt cleaning far enough back.

6)Clean your teeth well preferably use an oxygenating toothpaste.

After doing this routine for over 4 months I have not had one single stone and my bad breath has gone.

I now only do a thorough back tongue clean twice a week but I keep it at bay with a toothbrush by gently going over it.

When you are irrigating the tonsils put some h202 or mouithwash in the solution.

The two major things for me was the tongue and the sinus rinse.

So the facts were correct that 90% of bad breath is from the tongue.

I still have a yellow/white coating on my tongue and am working on a cure for that so I dont have to scrape my tongue as much.

But if you have a dry mouth or are a mouth breather then you are going to have to clean the tongue but clean it properly

    Hope this helps.

If you have loads of stones in your tonsils then blast them all out with a waterpik and then try my method

Many thanks for the info. Congratulations on keeping clear of the dreaded stones. I will definitely try the nasal irrigation as I know my sinus/post nasal drip is causing my problems. Keeping dairy foods and alcohol to a minimum is helping a bit but I will try to keep my sinuses clearer so will look for a plastic syringe as you suggest.

The small one i use for tonsil and the big one for sinus irrigation.

Make sure you check the very back of your tongue. You will only see this by pressing down on the back to see the very back. If you see a white/yellow coating then bobs your uncle. The taste in my throat went immediately when I got rid of all this and I have not had the taste back at all

Just found one on Amazon and have ordered. How much salt and bicarbonate of soda do you add to how much water (I guess H2O2 means water) ?

No H2O2 is Hydrogen peroxide. You can get it cheap from drug store or ebay. Get 3% food grade and not any bigger.

Mix salt and Baking soda 50/50

Sea salt is the best and distilled water.

I normally just half fill a glass and include half a teaspoon of the mix and then just half a cap of peroxide.

Try it without the peroxide first until you get the right saline mix that you feel comfortable with.

Then add the peroxide. It will sting a little at first. If it is too much then add less peroxide until you are comfortable. Dont forget to flip and turn first then rinse out both nostrils and also to snook some up so it comes down your throat. gargle with the rest. I did this twice per day for a week and then now down to once per day and twice per week flip and turn. you will feel better trust me

You are so right about the hydrogen peroxide. I am using the little squinting thing you pictured above to clean the tonsils then squinting the 3% hydrogen peroxide diluted half and half water on each tonsil rather than rinsing wih hydrogen peroxide as can be very drying on mouth. It really working after a week of doing it my tonsils don't smell
