Took my eye disease to my dermatologist

I've been to quite a few opthamologists & they will give you drops for an eye infection, but nothing for Blepharitis.  They will also give you drops for dry eyes, but again nothing for Blepharitis.  I had to go to my Dermatologist & he's the only one who treated it.  Sounds weird I know, but at least I can open my eyes up wide now where before I couldn't. They were squinty, red & crusty in the corners of them.  Who wants to go around like that?  Now people are actually looking into my eyes & not at my eyes.

    What is the treatment?

Betamethasone Valerate Topical Lotion.  It's really for Eczema which I have, but it also helps control my Blepharitis as well.  Do not put it into your eyes, only a dab on your finger & lightly go over it.

Lisa. Do you live in the u.k. or u.s.a. I ask as getting treatment on the n.h.s. is not very good, it's very much pot luck where you live. So some people seem to fare better than others.

I am off to Spain soon. Will see if I can get better treatment there.

I live in Iowa.  USA all the way!!!!   Also, I have a top rated Dermatologist who accepts all insurance coverages.  He has a 5 star rating.  A friend of my sister's goes to him, a patient I used to take care of goes to him & now my brother in law has went to him.  He's very popular & very reasonable.  You should come here to live, a lot cheaper.  Gas is only $1.79 a gallon & taxes are cheap too!!!!

    Hi Lisa,

I live in Virginia.  I was diagnosed with Blepharitis by a cornea specialist after being treated for Pink-Eye for 2 months.sad  He said there is no cure, but there are certain treatments that can help one where it is very controllable. He initially prescribed an eye drop that I used once a day. This blog helped me tremendously. I went to Walmart and bought the Wet Ones They are in a box that is red ,white and blue They are called antibacterial Hand Wipes I got the Fressh Scent. I would open a packet and tear each one into 8 strips. I used one strip for each eye and wiped the upper and lower lid just where the lashes are. I do not wash that off. Before dong this , every morning upon waking and every night before bed, I used OcuSoft Lid Scrubs, purchased in the eye section at Walmart also. I cleaned my entite lids with these, also tearing one towelette into 8 pieces as they are expensive. After using these, clean thouroughly the eye lids wth a warm wash cloth.  I use white ones, one side for one and other side for the other eye.  When I launder these, I use some bleach to kill bacteria. Then I use the Wet Ones, which are not washed off, It is their ingredient that kills the bacteria.  When I go a few days without them, I notice a blurred vision and itching. Throughout the day, I use an eye drop called Systane Balance that I also purchase at Walmart or CVS.THis is rather expensive too, but if I don't use especially before sleeping, my eyes are awful the next morning. For many months, I was not able to use any eye make-up. Eventually I started using more, but never what I had before this condition.I purchase disposable mascara wands from Ebay.  They come from China and I buy in bulk. My specialist does not have a machine for the treatment that helps because he said that it is very expensive and because insurance will not cover the treatment, people do not want to have it done. But there are places in teh states that do it, but it needs to be done every 2 years and DOES NOT CURE it  I noticed however when I first got the inflammation, I had just purchased all new Lancome eye make-up.  There is some ingredient in the Lancome that irritates my eyes.  I had to discard all the new make-up.  Now, I only use over the counter eye make-up.  I use disposable eye shadow wands too.  I know I am jumping around.  Hope I haven't confused you more.  Hugs, Kathy

You know what Kathy, I used all 3 of those things you mentioned & had no luck, they just made my eyes worse.  The wet wipes were the worst of the worse.  They stung like the dickens!!   If I do choose to use any wet wipes, I prefer using GermX antibiotic, alcohol & fragrance free.  Those wet wipes have a horrible smell to them & have a lot chemicals, where as GermX is much better.  Sometimes I may even use an anti dandruff shampoo with zinc in it & that sometimes help.  Like you said there is no cure for it & you're right there isn't, but the least we can do is to make our selves comfortable. Refresh eye drops are suppose to be good too, especially for dry eyes which I think there is a connection.  You know, dry eyes & Blepharitis.

But what does that have to do with Blepharitis?  I'm sure there are plenty of medical doctors & dermatologists in the UK.  I'm just saying who I went to.  Eye doctors just really don't know how to treat it like a dermatologist does.  I tell him I think I have seborrheic blepharitis on my eyes, because I have seborrheic dermatitis on my ears.  See? And then I show him  Then look at my eyes, see how crusty they get & they itch like crazy.  Yep you do he says & I'll give you a prescription for that.  So can I use this around my eyes too, besides my ears?  I asked him.  Yes you can, he said.  Just don't put it in your eyes, but massage a little on your eyes & around the upper & lower lashes.  And that's about the only thing that helped me.  Tried fish oil, olive oil, castor oil & flax seed oil.  None of them worked except what my dermatologist gave me.

So, Lisa, what is this wonder medication that you were given by your dermatologist?  Cut to the chase, if you please?

Betamethasone Valerate Topical Lotion.  Do not put it into your eye only around it & near the lashes, just a drop or two on your finger. The medicine is for my Eczema but it controls my Blepharitis as well.

I was prescribed Betamethasone Valerate Topical Lotion.  It's a liquid in a small bottle.  Put a little on your finger & rub it around your eyes but do NOTget it into your eyes, only around your lid & near lashes. This medication is really for eczema which I have, but my dermatologist says I can use it for my eyes too, when I have a flareup, but it also controls my Blepharitis.  Which sometimes can be related.
