Total Elbow Replacement - I have had this done. Anyone else?

In June 2014 I had my left elbow replaced. At the present time this is 9 weeks ago. I have had good progress but concerned about doing anything that will make it come loose.
Has anyone else had the same operation and how has it been and has there been any problem with the joint coming loose?

i did have elbow replacement on friday. pain was horrible after the nerve block wore off. the other continuous pain anesthesia didnt seem to be helping. i had a rash around clavicle and throat. i took out the catheter this morning. couldn't stand the itching. now its wait and see. it is a life changer for sure. bev

I am sorry to hear this. It just makes me a little bit more nervous that's for sure. But is the pain getting any better? And do you feel that it's going to be better than it was before?

yes the pain is better. such a relief to have the sling hold my arm in place. don't be afraid. if it has to be done, then you have no choice than to go ahead. i have high hopes. bev

I started this discussion in 2014, I had just had my elbow replaced. Now in 2019 all I can say is so far so good, but when i had this done it seemed the suggestion that 10 years might be when I needed it to be replaced again. So I am half way through and just wondering what the experience of others is at this time.
Have you had a replacement that has lasted longer than that, or less than that...?

It is 5 years since I had my elbow replacement. I have been careful to look after it and follow guide lines . I did have some pain a couple of weeks ago and the elbow was swollen. It recovered in a couple of days but I have no idea what caused the problem, and I am a tad nervous that something is going on. I swim, I drive, etc and I wonder how I can check if all is well without visiting the consultant, as it many be nothing given it has been fine since the swelling went down. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone-its been awhile since I posted and told you about my elbow replacement, done in 2016. Since then I have had two failures of my implant. The first was broken bushings , which led to metallosis, from the two metal components rubbing together. I had bushings replaced in 2018, than last winter fell on the ice with my hands out in front of me, and appear to have done something in there again. It makes "crunching noises" (crepitus) with every bend and I have developed a hard tumor on the inner side of my elbow near the joint, which I believe may be a metallosis pseudotumor. My doctor says I should not have any crepitus because he cut the bones away from the joint to install the prosthetic. Now we are looking at removing the elbow implant because there are no more parts and possibly doing a fusion , or just having no elbow joint. Anyone else had a fusion or no elbow? What are the results and aftermath? I currently am back to wearing a static elbow brace, 24/7. No fun!

That doesnt sound good at all. I hope there is something more they can do than a static brace. i dont know about fusion in the elbow, I had fusion in one of my toes.

please read all the way through.
I feel inclined to respond to share my experience.
I had the operation done in the summer of 2008.
the surgery went well, but the pain was unbearable. Despite the pain I didn't take any medication. I was never taken to the physical therapy sessions, therefor the cast wasn't removed for 9 months. I have restricted motion in my arm which looks pretty bad because I am unable to straighten it out. (i don't think many people notice).
Even though the above was the case, I played football whilst still in my cast (month 6)
I began to lift weights in 2010 so that i can play football in 2011. When 2011 came around I was one of the better athletes and in 2012 I was an All American lifter in my class. 2014 I was benching 315 lbs. I currently hold a desk job that doesnt require much physical work but I frequent the gym and have never had a problem with my elbow. timestamp: December 2019.

Is this s replacement you had or an operation? . No cast is necessary often when you have a replacement. I broke my arm in the past and it would not straighten sounds a bit like you have. What was happening though for me was that bones at the point where it wasnt going quite straight was rubbing away over the years leading it to fail in 2014 over something fairly minor.

Interesting... I actually never thought about it. It was from a break that shattered my elbow so they "replaced" it. But now that you put it that way I guess it could be more of a "reconstruction" surgery. My apologies for the mixup.

also, there is a lot of permanent hardware
Perhaps I should do more research.

No worries. There are different options available and many considerations to make for each option.
