Total Elbow Replacement - I have had this done. Anyone else?

Posted , 57 users are following.

In June 2014 I had my left elbow replaced.  At the present time this is 9 weeks ago. I have had good progress but concerned about doing anything that will make it come loose.

Has anyone else had the same operation and how has it been and has there been any problem with the joint coming loose?

i had elbow replacement a year ago i dont remember using the phrase toggling effect. Maybe it was when my elbow was too loose. That meant another procedure. In any case, I've had an excellent outcome. I have weight restriction of 5 to 10 lbs but I forget that all the time. Bev

I have had both elbows replaced years ago! One of them my Dr personally designed! Mine one replacement was because I shattered my elbow. There is a catch in the mechanism because they don't

want you to completely straighten it. The weight limit your are only suppose to lift is 5 pounds. If your arm is straight its too tempting to lift more! I recently shredded the bone all the way down to the titanium elbow and my Dr. had to find replacements for my old parts or he would have to design a new one for me. I have a problem of developing scar tissue super fast! As a result I've had several extra surgeries to remove the scar tissue because when the post op splint came off i couldn't bend my arm. I currently have more flexibility than I've had in the past 30 yrs . Other than the scar tissue issue I've never had any problems! I hope this helps!

I would not have wanted both done, one is enough ! I can straighten my arm much more since 2014 with my replacement than I could after the operation that I had when I was 16. What I do have which prompted me to add to this forum 3 months ago is a very small swelling around my elbow - which did go down but is back again now. I can still drive, swim etc etc being very careful - but I dont know what causes the swelling.

You are overtaxing it! Give it a few days rest and itself should be fine. You do realize that you know will have arthritis in that elbow\ arm now! If it continues take a couple of aspirin or Tylenol.

I have had both done and have never had any problems with it coming loose! Just follow the dr. orders and take it easy for the first 8 weeks so it has time to heal and become secure!

I had it done 5 years ago and its all been fine, and I follow DR's orders. I just have this very slight swelling that came and went 3 months ago, and also yesterday with a bit of a dull ache. Its gone again now.

As long as it doesn't feel hot to the touch you will be ok! Mine hurts when i overdo it.

Then definitely get to the Dr. ASAP!.Mine on!y hurt like that when I shattered it causing me to get me to get it replaced in the first place. You should never have that much pain again unless you seriously injure it.i did last year when I turned my arm funny and tore the bone that held the stem of my implant in half right down the middle! I had to have a new bone put in to hold the new implant and I have a huge clamps hold it together along with the torn bone! You can see and feel the clamps through the skin! It was a mess! So don't take any chances if something doesn't feel right get it checked out! You know your body better than anyone else!
