Total Knee Replacement -Burning Pain

Posted , 79 users are following.

My mom had a total knee replacement 8 days ago and has severe burning all around the joint. It gets worse when she's sitting and raises her foot up to straighten her leg. She has to do to exercises and the pain was so bad today that she was in tears. The therapist wasn't very helpful and acted like my mom was over reacting. Has anyone else has so much burning after a knee replacement?

hi,the pain can be extreme and especially in early days-and all over body as months went on for me;and i am now 10 months on now and less and less pain, thank god.

Hang on in there-as a real test on patience and using pain relief when needed as really really needed.

Do not skip on pain relief.Exercises to be done can only be done with pain relief esp in early days.

Remember this is a major surgery and 8 days is very early to expect such little pain.

Had burning pain and all sorts of pain but you have to do exercises and important to use pain medicine.

I use mix of morphine, codeine and methadone which I was taking for spine issues and unable to get up and walk without it,some days.Have to manage the medicine.

I have not been able to use anti inflammatories as I am allergic to them.

    Best wishes-jill

I have the burning sensation on one side of my knee after tkr I can’t let anything touch it it hurts so bad. I have a hard time sleeping can’t let the sheet touch the knee. I am in pt 3x a week and this pain won’t go away. Yes I’m taking my pain pills and they barely take the edge off. I’m 3 weeks in. I feel your pain.

I had right knee replaced 4 days ago on a Monday. No pain until middle of the night Wednesday. As of today, Friday, it’s a little better except for the burning pain. It just comes out of nowhere. And icing makes it worse. I can’t tolerate the ice!  Didn’t get to start PT yesterday because of the severe swelling and tightness. Will try next week but I’m scared to death. How in the world do you tolerate PT??  Does it help any at all?  I had my left replaced 5 years ago and didn’t have this fire burning pain. I hope it ends soon. But from what I’ve read here, I’m getting afraid it will be a while.

HI CINDY, I JUST FOUND THIS SITE AND WANT TO ASK HOW IS YOUR MOM FEELING FROM THE BURNING IN THE REPLACED KNEE? AND IF SHE USED OR DID ANYTHING TO HELP GET RID OF THAT BURNING PAIN?  I HAD MY RIGHT KNEE REPLACED 3 X SINCE 2006 THE LAST TIME WAS LAST YEAR IN APRIL- 2017 AND THE PAIN OR BURNING STILL INTERFEAR WITH MY DAILY CHORES. I CAN ONLY WALK OR STAND 30 MIBNUTES OR SO IF I DON'T TAKE PAION MEDICINE.THE DOCTORS SAY THEY DON'T KNOW WHY IS HAPPENING, AND EACH TIME I SEE THEM THEY KEEP TELLING ME TO WAIT MORE AND IT MAY GO AWAY BY ITSELF. I BELIEVE IT HAS TO BE A NERVE THAT IS ON A SPOT WHERE THE RUBBING WITH A MUSCLE, TENDON OR FLESH IRRITATES IT. I JUST DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE WITH THIS CONDITION.EVEN THOW IS WAY MUCH MORE TOLERABLE THAN THE 1ST. TIME. THE "DOCTOR. BUTCHER WHO DID IT THE FIRST TIME. AFTER 2 YEARS OF CONSTANT TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE PAIN EVEN WITH THERAPYALL THAT TIME I COULDN'T FEEL ANY RELIEF AT ALL. AND MY KNEE WAS BENDING AND TURNING ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT SIDE INSTEAD OF STAYING STRAIGHT. AND THE "BUTCHER" KEPT SAYING IT WAS ME WHO WAS SCARED OF THE THERAPY AND PAIN. BUT EVEN AFTER TAKING DOUBLE DOSAGE OF A STRONG PAIN KILLER I WOULD NOT GET ANY RELIEF AT ALL. AND DESPITE THE PAIN I MADE SURE MY LEG WAS BEND TO 120 DEGREES, AND RIGHT AFTER GETTING OFF THE ELECTRIC SHOCKS MACHINE WITH HEAT THEN ICE, MY LEG WOUL TWIST MORE THAN BEFORE THERAPY. AFTER 2 YRS. OF THAT TERRIBLE PAIN FINNALY I FOUND 1 GREAT DR. WILLING TO FIXX IT, AND IT WAS BECAUSE THE BUTCHER FORGOT OR LEFT ONE PIECE OUT. IF THE SECOND DR. DIDN'T REQUEST NOT TO PUT IN IN TROUBLE I WOULD OF SUED HIM FOR AT LEAST 1 MILLION DOLLARS AND HAVE HIS LICENCE REMOVED. BECAUSE I MET AT THE THERAPY A LOT OF HIS PATIENTS THAT WERE IN MORE PAIN AND PROBLEM AND WANTED TO SUE HIM ALSO.SO, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS TIME I'LL GET RID OF THIS BURNING THAT IS VERY IRRITATING AND PAINFUL OR IF I WILL NEED ANOTHER SURGERY.THAT'S WHY I WANT TO KNOW IF YOUR MOM GOT RELIEF SO I CAN TRY THE SAME. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR MOM  WORIES AND WILL APPRECIATE IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION. THANKS AND GOOD HEALTH TO YOU AND YOUR MOM..  FROM FL..SILVIA.

Just had  TKR  one week ago today.  The pain for the first two days was so intense and couldn’t get a handle on it. Now each day gets better.

I do however have the numbness around the legs that moves to different areas daily and definitely the burning pain everyone is talking about. I finally got back on a proper medication regime yesterday but felt awful from to many . Today’s aim going to try straight  extra strength Tylenol with T3’s and hopefully very little morphine .

I had total knee replacement on Feb. 13th. Today is April 16th and i still have burning pain in my knee. I use ice packs and a small fan directed at my knee at nights. There are medicines that help with this; Gabaputen and Lyrcica. My Doctors will not give me because of diabetes. There has to be an answer out there. I am told this will go away in time, after the severed nerves heal. This burning is getting me down.....

      Hello.

I had my TKN one month ago and most of the burning has gone away. I still have numbness in different areas  and still working in the mobility . I do ice often and it really seems to help. Every hour if I am lying down. Remember.... only twenty minutes at a  time . No more or it reverses the results  .

I had a total knee 8 years ago, for the first two years it felt like someone hit me in the shin with a bat, I later found out why. I have had burning, swelling, and redness warmth ever since. The only thing that would allow any relief was a mixture of Naproxen Sodium and BackAid MAX tablets. My sciatica has been acting up since then. My Dr. told me it could happen due to the angle change of the hips as one leg is now longer than the other. I now have numbness in both shins down to my feet, it comes and goes in severity. I have had an allergy test done to see if I was allergic to the components of the replacement, but the test was administered incorrectly and the results came back negative, yet no one knows why my symptoms continue. I keep searching for something that will work. I have tried just about every anti inflammatory I could find, herbal and over the counter. Too much over the counter, say Ibuprofen or Naproxen will cause more inflammation as well as kidney damage. Too much Acetaminophen causes liver damage, so there are few avenues left, but I am still searching and will let you know if I find anything else that works better. I still think it is just a reaction to the components of my knee, which are Chromium, Nickel, and Palladium. No one seems to want to help, which leads me to believe they know what is causing the burning, swelling, and redness with heat, but do not want to admit it for fear of a mass lawsuit. Hope you feel better.

Had terrible burning, swelling and IT band problems. PT did not help, had surgery Feb.13th. 2 1/2 months post op i Went to the Surgeon who gave me a cortisone shot in the knee. Greatly decreased the burning, swelling and IT band issue.

Mine was covered by Workers Compensation, so after many years of cortisone shots, the place I had been going to since 2004 said they don't do those there. The bursa sacs are my main problem now, that's where I had been having the cortisone shots. They are supposed to be removed when a total knee is installed, but since mine were not, the joint fluid just runs down the inside of my leg and causes my foot and ankle to swell. Hope your knee works out great for you and your issues are resolved.

I had terrible burning, kept me up nights. Also had IT band issues. PT just was no help. Went to surgeon and got a cortisone shot in the knee. I am much better now - burning has decreased significantly and swelling is better. My surgery was on Feb.13th
