Total Knee Replacement -Burning Pain
Posted , 79 users are following.
My mom had a total knee replacement 8 days ago and has severe burning all around the joint. It gets worse when she's sitting and raises her foot up to straighten her leg. She has to do to exercises and the pain was so bad today that she was in tears. The therapist wasn't very helpful and acted like my mom was over reacting. Has anyone else has so much burning after a knee replacement?

A Continuous Passive Motion machine is used as you recover from various types of joint surgery.
Please look this up as I am finding out many if not all the good doctors send their patients home with one. Like I said I had to fight for one.
Please everyone !!! Only have surgery from the best of surgeons! Do not have surgery unless it is the last resort.
They don't tell you it is hell and knee joint only lasts 15-20 yrs if you are good to it.

Hi Cindy I am three weeks over a total knee replacement and still struggling. My knee is burning hot and we r putting bags of frozen peas on it it helps for a while. Phisio in hospital forced me to bend knee or would not get out I burst a few staples and bled a lot. Keep leg elavated. Get a skate board and do a little every day. Lifting your leg and holding is good also rolling up a bath towel and place under knee and push down on it. Good luck it's very painful. Regards Lorna.

They cannot do that to you!!!! That is abuse!!! God have mercy, you report that to the hospital patient relations asap!!! That person is wicked and should be fired!! I have never heard such a thing!
Please please do something about it. Infection can set in and you will be in a horrid situation! Contact your doctor! Report abuse!!!!

Hi Vino,
Unfortunately the doctor is right it will gradually get better. It took about 6 months for the burning and what I call a feeling of getting electrocuted to ease up, but everyone is different. I had one knee done at a time, a year in between, I don't know how your mother did both at the same time. I hurt so bad with the first I cried for months it was like every day was a new pain in a different area. It is very difficult to walk with one let alone both. Does she do her leg lifts and other exercises while she is just sitting or lying in the bed? I know it is excruciating but it does help. Whatever she does she can't let her legs get stiff because that just causes more pain, and could result in more surgeries. After my first surgery I swore I would never get the other one done, but I did. I just had my surgery on Oct 20th. This pain doesn't seem to be as bad as the first one, but I fell in the hospital and they found a fracture last month. I go back to the doctor on the 11th of this month to find out what is going to happen. I'm terrified that they will have to open me back up. Anyway just have patience it will eventually be better. Push her to do those exercises and ice, ice, ice, it will help with her walking, but she will get aggravated with you so beware haha. I could have choked my husband! Haha. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon. Keep me posted.

How are you now?
I am 10 months since surgery and just starting to feel a lot more normal(lessened pain).
But,I was aware it may take a year to feel a lot better.
