I was offered it by GP when I had sciatica, although I did not take much of it as I am a bit iffy about opioids.

Yes, I am and have been for some time.  However, I take it for nerve pain not the muscle pain caused by PMR.  I'm not sure that it will provide much  relief as a pain-killer just for PMR - most don't help at all.

Are you taking it for something other than PMR?

Yes they have found that i have mid foot OA, so that is the reason i have to take it as i can hardly walk,  and they said they can do surgery.

Do you have any side effects at all. I am reluctant to take it as well as pred, but the pain is so bad i have no choice.

      Many thanks

Tramadol should be pretty good to stop the pain. The only problem is it is an opioid and so is addictive. Loads of people take it on the other hand even with PMR, just don't overdo it. I have not come across a drug without a side effect. People I know say they feel tired and spaced out, I have no problem apart from constipation.

I forgot to say the real downside of Tramadol, in my case anyway, is you can't drink!!

thats a bumer going away soon!, but if it helps me to walk a bit more than i am doing at the moment it will be worth it, and i will take everything you all have said on board.

Hi Mags, I take Tramadol & paracetamol along with Humira & Methetrexate and Pred. God I sound like an addict...... I stopped the Tramadol earlier, but sometimes needs it when I over do it. Rather that than raising the Pred again. Anyway at 17.5 pred and dropping again....

Hi Helen, I am amazed that Tramadol helps your PMR pain. I had it before I was diagnosed and it was worse than useless.

Hi Mags, you can just stop taking Tramadol, it is not like pred. In fact it is recommended not to take it for too long as it is addictive.

Hi ptolemy, many thanks thats one of the reasons i am not sure if i should take it.

Really i have enough with the pred.

But if the pred isn't helping for a different sort of pain then you need the tramadol and that is why they've prescribed it. I think what ptolemy probably means is that you can take it some days if the pain is worse and not others if you feel you can manage without.

In your reply to Nefret you said they have said they CAN do surgery - is that right? If so what and when?

There won't be many I doubt. Most painkillers don't do anything for PMR - though they MAY do something for the other things that can appear alongside PMR. For PMR itself a mg or two more of pred is far preferable - and less addictive.
