TRENDELENBURG GAIT after THR.

Posted , 11 users are following.

Six months post-op left THR, still finding it very difficult to walk without a stick. Never needed one before op. Have been told by my consultant to get rid of the stick and keep on with the excercise sheet from the physio. So now, i waddle like a duck, no pain, and he says should be fine in a further six months. Anyone else out there in the same boat or now fully recovered. Thanks. Ray.

Yes I had the gait. Hydrotherapy helped, and doing the hydrotherapy exercises in a swimming pool.

I have been through thr for left hip last year April start doing exercise in gym weakness has gone to most of the extinct so in short exercise is only solution more than hydrotherapy or anything

Watch your feet and walk towards a mirror, you will see that you lift your hip up to walk...it is easily corrected...watch yourself walk!

Hello, again! I replied to you in your thread over on the Hip Dysplasia and Disorders forum. As I said there, at 6 months post THR, it's likely that if your limp was due to something minor, it would have been gone by now, provided that you have been fairly active, doing plenty of walking, even if it has been with a cane. I had the same situation and have pursued a second opinion and have been diagnosed with a gluteus medius tendon tear that is bad enough to require surgery, that never could never have healed on its own, with or without physical therapy. In fact, physical therapy could have made it worse.

One good thing you have going for you is that you don't have pain, so it is possible that when you have a diagnosis of which muscles or other soft tissues are involved, that a treatment program for them might help.

If I were you, I'd insist on a proper diagnosis for exactly why you have the limp so that you can actively work on getting it better. Simply telling you to walk without your cane and wait another six months to see if it gets better wouldn't have been good enough for me. We need to get on with our lives, after all!

I had the trendelenburg before and after THR . Was told , like you , to keep following the exercises i had been given on my sheet and all should be fine ...see you in 9 months time ! I decided to find a very good local private physio who prescribed some very specific exercises to counteract the gait . 5 weeks later I am walking just fine without any sticks and hardly a trace of a wobble .Hope all goes well for recovery

    Hi Ray

I am 10 months since LTHR last June and still get really achy painful leg hip and can't walk without  discomfort. Have been told I have bursitis and being referred to orthapaedic dept  because physio. Thinks it may be tendon.

stopped using stick 5 months but thinking about using again though don't really want to. Still waiting appt so like you bit fed up thought I would. Be. Back to normal by know.

do hope things will improve for you soon.

    regards Lorna

The Trendelenburg gait pattern (or gluteus medius lurch) caused by weakness of the abductor muscles of the lower limb, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. I experienced the same issue & walked with a stick for several weeks. It takes times to get back in shape after major surgery. Keep up with exercises especially the caboose squeezes. Those are the most beneficial as they work the core muscles and strengthen the leg to walk in a normal gate. Physio is important to stay with the program.

So proud of your recovery, remember your still in the early stages. It's not  always easy. Sometimes we hippies just power thru & time heels hoping for a great outcome.

Soon you will be past this and walking normally finding how wonderful it is to not have the previous hip pain before THR. Life is good. Take it easy and continue with your exercises time will pass by quickly and life will move on  with not a thought of surgery.

Summer is near. Yeah!  Take it easy, one day at a time don't over do! No climbing mountains ! Best of luck! confused

Thanks for your input. I think a lot of the problem is that people I know are just fine after surgery, and one wonders why you're not like them. I suppose we are all different. Ray.

Yep - I have the walk too .......... I now have a very 'hard to please' physio supplied by my employer .... she makes me to more backside strengthening exercises with a huge 'rubber band' to increase the difficulty.

I'm doing Sit/Stand with the band around my knees, and I have to push my knees apart against the band.

Also backward and sideways leg swinging with the band around a nearby table leg.

I guess doing it in a swimming pool would have a similar effect in providing a similar resistance.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply. Taken every thing on board and I will keep up all exercises. I'm still fit and a keen cyclist. No problem on bike. Thanks . Ray.

My surgeon says everyone heals at a different rate . Keep moving I get stiff from sitting to long or trying to lay in bed so j get up do a few exercises and it seems to help. I am six weeks post op and walking good but still having pain but like dr said it can take a full year for most so enjoy your accomplishments and be patient ( I know that is hard) everyone on red seems to be at a different rate so I guess we are all or slain our own way . 😊
