Triggering your own illness

Posted , 6 users are following.

Now this may seem odd but bear with me.

I am sure there may be a time when you may realise I have not been the loo for a few days and you know if this were to continue you may be very ill a few more days down the line so does anyone here have a "super" food which is super for them which they may use to trigger the condition knowing a mild trigger now is much worse than a major relapse later.

I suppose this would come under the area IBS followed by constipation followed by IBS if there was such an area.  The constipation period does not need to be painful and in fact it can feel quite normal but you know this is only deferring the illness.

Does anyone have any concept of what I mean as this is specific to me at the moment so as you may have guessed I am just highlighting my symptoms and this may be where some use medication.

My concern about eating foods that may be well known for making one run to the loo like prunes may be too fibrous and instead of going from gentle visit may lead to a full blown IBS episode, which I am desperately trying to avoid, so wondered what gentle foods you may use if you go through a similar cycle to the one I am going through now.

Thank you

Try Laxido. You can buy them or get them on prescription. You can experimentwith them and adjust the dosage accordingly.

    Good luck

Take care and keep in touch

I will look into this. I have a few to choose from now Lactulose, Movicol and Laxido. Expirimenting, sounds fun smile

Thank you and after 5 years with it I do not see it going anytime soon so I will be here.

You could try a Dulcolax suppository.  If that does not work, you could try a Fleets enema.  You get these over the counter.

Just so you know, laxido and movicol are the same thing apart from Laxido is (supposedly) orange flavoured- though I don't think it tastes of orange lol

I have just mentioned this in my last reply as working backwards. I was out at 9am this morning discusses the joys of the differences. Joy oh joy smile

Oral is my preference so no to suppository.

I have laxedo so everyone has been very helpful but the orange won out.

Taking a Dulcolax suppository would be the least upsetting way in my opinion.  Use it in the AM, it works withinn 30 min. or less, is not systemic so would not upset your whole system. (Make sure it's a Dulcolax supp. not just a glycrin supp.)   A Fleets enema is a veryi small enema, comes in a flexible plastic bottle,  and that would be my next step.  It's not all that bad!

Suppositories and enemas are a bit of an uncomfortable way of relieving constipation but I’ve found they work fairly shortly after use so you shouldn’t have to worry about suddenly having to rush to the loo next day.

Re Movicol, my mother used it quite a lot and never had uncontrollable bowel movements afterwards.

      Hello Hazel

Yes I don't fancy an enema.

      Though the effects sound good

I think the problem for me is I eat reasonably well porridge, carrots, celery, spinach, yoghurt, much fruit but still my body is lax so by taking a laxative it could kickstart everything in a rush as I am not used to it.

When end did she take just before bed? Is there an approximate time delay say 8 hours? This is just guess work but any planning ahead would be ideal.

      Hi Astrozombie,

I think she took it in the morning but can’t ask her unfortunately as she’s passed on now.  I believe she said she had to drink lots of liquid with it so it wouldn’t have been very convenient taking it at night.   Hopefully someone else on here could advise you or you could try looking it up on Google.

I’m in much the same boat as you at the moment.  Occasionally I give up and just go for a curry which usually works but I don’t feel well for a time afterwards.

      Hello Hazel

      I understand.

I have bitten the the proverbial bullet and consumed my sachet at 8.56pm so I will just have to see what happens now and hopefully no Trainspotting moments.

It is a horrible boat to be in. Luckily I do not eat curry so I do not have that problem. I am a creature of patterns and habit so steak only when I am out as I know that will always look and taste very similar. I know nerdy.

Good luck, Astrozombie!  Hope it helps in a gentle way.  As others have said, you probably need to experiment with the dosage.

I try not to have much chilli usually as I think it's rather harsh for the system, especially if you have IBS.  I've taken just 5 ml of Lactulose over the last 2 days and am going normally for a while.

      Best wishes, Hazel

Thank you but did not work. Indeed re: experimentation but now unsure when to take the next one in case there is a delay period. Why is something supposedly so natural so complicated?

I do not eat chilli. I might try that next.

      Thank you

      Hm, let me see …

      Have you tried:

Olive oil  (I’ve never been constipated in Greece or Spain where it’s used a lot)

Figs and dates, but particularly figs

Rhubarb - a very old remedy.  Expensive right now though.

Linseed – soaked and sprinkled over food

Tummy massage - Clockwise from groin, up and over top of belly to groin.

I wondered whether Chinese medicine has something equivalent to senna pods but I don’t know anything about it and you’d need a reputable shop as some can be rather dodgy.

I saw this under FAQ about Movicol: ‘How long will MOVICOL take to work? Don't be concerned if MOVICOL does not work immediately. MOVICOL usually takes 1 to 2 days to trigger the first bowel movement – allowing you to stay in control, so it's important to remember this’.

So don’t give up yet, just keep drinking lots of liquid which is apparently what makes it work.

Be careful with the chilli by the way!

      Hello Hazel

I put a teaspoon full of olive oil in my porridge first thing along with a sprinkling of flaxseed which is what we call Linseed.

I do do not have figs in but I will add to my shopping list as next shop Monday.

I do not have rhubarb and not being a cook I would not know where to start with that one.

I will look at the massage option later as massaging myself may feel a little strange.

I don't know and unlikely to have anything like that where I am unless anyone has a reputable link they trust.

Thank you for that note, very useful

No to chilli. A little too exotic for me. Scrambled egg with spinach is more my speed.

      Hello Hazel

I have a strange thing to say. Looking back over my diet diary the only thing which has changed is the introduction of porridge as the doc, my family and my ex said it would be so much better for my body.

Now I know my next question may sound barmy as it goes against all cinventional wisdom but has anyone heard of porridge stopping people going to the loo rather than helping?

This is just a thought as it is the only big change in my diet. Alpen out and porridge in.

Not barmy at all.  In fact, I read somewhere that porridge can sometimes have the opposite effect on some people and stop them up, as can eating too much fibre.  Not sure what constitutes ‘too much’ though as you obviously need some in the diet.

Go easy on the eggs as they’re recommended for binding you up after diarrhoea.

Rhubarb is easy to cook.  Definitely discard the leaves which are toxic, chop the stalks up and just simmer them in water with sugar until soft.  I’m told it contains Glycosides which are a laxative.  You can also buy it as an extract in health food shops.

Don’t suppose you’re on iron tablets, by any chance?   They can really stop you up.

      Hello Hazel

Thank you for confirming. Indeed I had Alpen today with flax sprinkles as a change.

Eggs often have the opposite effect on me. That last time I was ill I had scrambled egg and 2 slices of whole meal toast so I replicated last night in hope more than anything else.

I am shopping Monday afternoon so I will keep an eye out.

No I am not on iron tablets and do not even know what they are

Though it does beg the question I wonder if anyone takes supplements for such problems. The healthy type you get in Holland and Barrett. I do not but wondering whether I should be.

Also just been for a 30 min walk so I will see if that helps

      Thank you

Amen, I agree.  Suppositories are NOT all that uncomfortable.  You can use a rubber glove with lubricant.  Quick, simple, and it's soon all over with!
