Triggering your own illness

Now this may seem odd but bear with me.

I am sure there may be a time when you may realise I have not been the loo for a few days and you know if this were to continue you may be very ill a few more days down the line so does anyone here have a "super" food which is super for them which they may use to trigger the condition knowing a mild trigger now is much worse than a major relapse later.

I suppose this would come under the area IBS followed by constipation followed by IBS if there was such an area.  The constipation period does not need to be painful and in fact it can feel quite normal but you know this is only deferring the illness.

Does anyone have any concept of what I mean as this is specific to me at the moment so as you may have guessed I am just highlighting my symptoms and this may be where some use medication.

My concern about eating foods that may be well known for making one run to the loo like prunes may be too fibrous and instead of going from gentle visit may lead to a full blown IBS episode, which I am desperately trying to avoid, so wondered what gentle foods you may use if you go through a similar cycle to the one I am going through now.

Thank you

I sometimes sit on the throne for what seems like a very prolonged period, occasionally at work, this often leads to embarrassment warranted or not I feel embarrassed. My wife suggested a gentle rocking motion (no pun indented) back & forth. This often results in relief. At home I take a longish walk with our dog this gives us both some relief, though timing is important, a circular route is recommended where shortcuts home are useful.

More recently I have found that 'homemade' soups & broths are a good preventative measure, the canned varieties don’t seem to work, I am told they remove most of the fibre in processing in fact many processed foods make the problem worse & also lead to flatulence.

It might also be worth mentioning good old fashioned porridge first thing in the morning, made with boiling water & simmered in the microwave for 5min at the equivalent of 500wats (half power on most) with dried prunes & a little cold milk, effect relief within an hour or two.

Hope I haven’t rambled too much & you find this useful, as you can see I prefer to avoid additional medication to counteract the effects of the ones causing the problem.

I like to avoid additional med. as well.  Sometimes it is a constant route to the bathroom over and over again, and how annoying this can be.  I'm on a high dose of prednisone due to polymyalgia rheumatica and that has compounded the problems..........  This is all VERY disturbing.  It seems I'm never finished.

Indeed I know that feeling and I am not working currently for that reason. Also why no longer in a relationship.  That has not worked for me re: rocking but to be honest nothing is at the mo and now having trouble sleeping but could be other reasons for that. Indeed at the mo I have been hesitant about my normal 6 or so miles so I cover a 20 min circular for the same reason.

I will ill have to look at that but I am useless in the kitchen. I have been eating porridge with disgusting prunes for the last 3 days with no effect.

No not at all. I will try for sleep again now. At the mo I have had to submit to Laxedo but did not work but will try again when I do not have much on for a few days. I need to study psychometric tests tomorrow and sit one Wed so may try another on Wed.

I should add for clarity that I am type2 diabetic & up to a year or so ago diet & exercise controlled so diet has always been important, lots of fruit veg pulses & moderate amounts of (complex)carbs & protein to balanced across the day.

The point of this preamble is that up until I was persuaded to adopt the metformin meds I was fine, having said that I now do a much more sedentary (detrimental in many ways) job.

Also I should have added that fluid balance is always important with fibre to fill out soften & bind. Tea & coffee are diuretics but again fine in moderate amounts fruit juices are invariable sweetened with raw sugar so are generally avoided, so I top up with water at regular intervals.

Hope this clarifies my previous reply a little background always helps.

I know a lot about diabetes.  It is in my family and I was with someone who was type1 for a long time.  I understand why you need to stick to your diet.

My problem is I do eat a lot of fruit and veg and 2.5l of water per day but very little happens with my body and then I will be very ill, have all the IBS symptoms. and then my body seems to go on holiday again so then I have to start eating things which affects others' body negatively so liquorice for example.  The other day I even downed a glass of milk as someone said dairy is bound to make you ill but it did not.

My job has always been sedentary and I do not think that helps but it is not the main issue.

I never drink coffee. I drink 2 or 3 teas in a day and the rest is water.  I do not tend to drink fruit juice, maybe cranberry juice occasionally.

Indeed it does but unlike most here I am not always regularly ill so my symptoms go from constipation to could I get more ill than this and back to constipation.

PS We, ex and I, have been in a few clubs when her bag fell to the side and her needle rolled out.  I used to look the part so we would get some funny looks as if to say drug dealers especially with my look at the time. I looked like an extra from Sons of Anarchy smile

You have my sympathy, your meds & condition are unknown to me but the symptoms you describe humble my problems.

I trust there is some hope out there for you.

Sounds patronising but I find it hard to express my respect for your efforts.

Sorry didn't mean it to sound like a lecture just filling in some background that I ommited from the earlier post. I too have IBS but not often, its usualy something that viiolently dissagrees with my gut & is promptly expelled, I try to keep tabs on the things that might trigger a eppisode but usualy fail to pin it down with any kind of certainty.

I do know that apples & cheese bind me up so again 'in moderation'.

I do feel unwell when bunged up & relieved when it finnaly moves I am trying desperately to get my nomal rythem back.

I could never understand why my granparents were so obsessed with their bowels I think I am begining to understand. So enough of me,

I wish you well with your quest for a solution.

By the way I havn't a clue who or what Sons of Anarchy are redface

No, no that is fine honestly.  I used to have IBS 2-3 times a week but now more monthly but mainly because I have cut anything out of my diet which was enjoyable.  No more single malt and port for example.

I do not have that and wish I did as otherwise I would identify that food and never eat it.  My body acts more like a balloon and when I eat it fills up a little and eat more and so on and the point at which it goes bang is the point when I have to run to the loo but the problem is I never know when that is going to be so it is a little bit like a game show with my body.

I keep a note of what I eat and I have replicated week after week when I have been ill for the following weeks and I will be fine and then 3 weeks later and bang so my problem is more build up.  If I did not eat I would be fine.

I can not eat cheese as put me in hospital when I was younger.  The last time I was ill Feb 4th I contacted the doc and he said eat more apples so I tend to eat an apple and day and since Feb 4th I have not been ill yet.

Eggs are meant to bind but on the day when I last very ill I had eaten eggs 3 hours before so I do not think that necessarily applies to me.

I agree. I do not have a normal rhythm sadly.

I completely agree.  Mine used to eat many prunes.

      Thank you and ditto

US TV prog with a UK lead.  Think big bellies, big hair and big beards only now I have no hair, and no beard and a much smaller belly so everyone tells me how good I look on IBS smile
