Trimalleolar ankle fracture: Need positivity

Posted , 9 users are following.

I broke my ankle on the 4th of June( Trimalleolar ankle fracture) and am waiting to get surgery on Wednesday. I am a stay-at-home mom of a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 month old, and I am really depressed that I am not able to take care of my kids. My husband has taken off work in the meantime until we find a daycare that we are comfortable with them going to. Does anyone have any positive stories to share with me on their recovery. How long did it take you to start walking again? Also, what should I expect after surgery?

You are going to need help during your recovery. I am single and have a dog and I was lucky that my Mom was able to stay with me for 2 1/2 months to help me out. I broke my ankle in 3 places and broke my leg at the end of January and had surgery the next day. I was in a splint for 12 days after the surgery, then in a plaster cast for 4 weeks after that. Once I was out of my cast I was put into an ankle brace, but not allowed to bear weight for another 2 weeks (8 weeks post op). At 13 weeks I was down to one crutch and at 17 weeks I got rid of my other crutch. PT wanted me to go from one crutch to a cane, however I have the same amount of pain weather I use 1 crutch, a cane, or nothing so I opted to go with nothing. The biggest piece of advice, and this is coming from someone with no patience at all, you have to be patient! My physical therapist was very honest with me and told me up front that ankles are the worst joint to rehab.
