trochanteric bursitis

hello, I am 49 and was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis few months ago. I have started with strong pain on the upper outer side of my thight list January and after several attempts following MRI results I was prescribed with Cymbalta 60mg/day. I am on this medication (+ sulpadol) since March 2014. I also underwent to a nerve block procedure on April 23, 2014. I had physio agopunture and muscle stimulation. Although the pain has slighltly dininished, I am still experiencing discomfort. I work as Sr Engineer and spend most of my day at my desk. walk in the evening and doingo some exercising when I have time......

I have recently moved to UK from Ireland (were I received treatment indicated above) and was wondering if there is anything else that I should do to help with resolution of this problem.

thank you in advance

regards

Monica

Dear Monica , it is possible to get healed from this. It takes time rest and icing at first and lots of anti-inflammatories, try ultrasound guided injections , end a lot of stretching and a foam roller works really well . The physical therapy is very important and you have to do it daily , sometimes two or three times today but in the end it will pay off . If that doesn't work it is possible to get a bursectomy done arthroscopically with debridement and ITB windowing and there are excellent results for this surgery which is outpatient and very easy to recover from , good luck and take care

I keep hearing about the foam roller on this thread....what do you have to do? Sounds like it helps!

Dear Vgirl, you can get them at most sporting goods stores, make sure you get one that has more loose foam holes in it . I also purchased an inexpensive yoga mat to lay on the floor in front of the TV because it can take a lot of time to do this . You want to roll over at starting at the top most portion of your hip and go very slowly until you find a knot that is painful , stop and hold it on that not end even though it hurts try to breathe deeply and exhale and stay on it for about a minute until it releases as you go down and release these not you will release the IT band the making your leg feel a lot better and your hip . I am 61 years old and have no problems doing it . However I finally opted for the arthroscopic bursectomy , because I have so many other serious injuries to my neck and such . Read some of my other posts and I hope they help you and I pray that you get some relief .

I wanted to let everyone know I just had a hip bursectomy in my right trocanteric area , they also did IT be windowing end debridement, arthroscopically and it was outpatient and I was home , being able to weight-bear at first . I did use a walker for a week and then went to a cane for a while but did lots of physical therapy starting the day after . Dr. Steven Porter in Mesa Arizona did it and I'm so thankful I did it . I will see if I going to do my other hip , which was caused from a car accident. I already had herniated bulging disc in my lower back end stenosis in my neck from a failed surgery . So there was no way I could deal with sleeping , couldn't on either side nor my back because of my neck . I highly suggest this very successful surgical answer to get rid of bursitis , the statistics are excellent for everyone . And your bursa grow back in a couple weeks and their new and not inflamed . Good luck to all of you and much love

Why did you have the surgery on your neck? It would seem that you have a "failed neck", not failed neck surgery/

"the statistics are excellent for everyone". Which statistics? Please let me know.

Thank you for your question JP

I had a double discectomy back in 2008 by an older neurosurgeon who only use titanium and screws . Now in the last four years , because of that surgery and not having cadaver bone grafted in , now the discs upper and lower of the surgical site are injured from the pressure and I have stenosis in my neck and radiculopathy down my arms and my hands are numb and sometimes my feet or legs . Which I do constant physical therapy for with MedX machines . I also have herniated and bulging disc in my lower back which VAX-D helped get well or I would not have been able to take the bursitis in my hips or the physical therapy to help heal them . I'm kind of just a mess from head to toe literally . But at least my lawyer will be settling and I will be getting some money for future surgeries from my accident . Take care and thank you again for all of your knowledge knowledge and helpfulness

HI Connie -I see that you had the bursectomy and that you had good results. They also did something to your IT band?? My left IT band is very very tight. Using  stick roller plus my PT person working on it and it is very sore but that needs to happen first to get better right?

Hi Mark , I know exactly what you mean end I think that they get tight from the soreness of the bursa affecting all the other muscles and everything in there and it just tightens up that IT band . I noticed that the one I've already had surgery on , is getting more normal and I hardly have any issues with that one , post surgery three months . The left hip I just had surgery on December 31 and it is getting better too and eventually when healed in a couple of months I won't have that tightness . I'm using a little bit of a foam roller now , and PT and riding a bicycle or stationary bike for my new surgical side. I'm really excited that everything will be well and back to normal within just a few months, only because of my age 61 . I am the person would probably only need a total of three months to get back to normal where it might take me 4 to 6 . But already I don't have much pain in my left at all . The new bursa grow back and they are healthy , good luck to you end have a great week. , Before I considered the arthroscopic surgery for the bursectomy I did a lot of homework online , and they do the IT band windowing so that you don't have that putting any pressure over that area , best of luck to you take care your friend , Connie

I have discovered that if I very slowly stretch out my leg as I rise from a chair, etc,. and only at certain angles...that I can get those quad muscles to slowly pass over the bursa without pain...and I do mean slowly.  If I get a shot of pain, I either slightly change the angle or wait...        Not much of a cure but it does eliminate some pain......just trying to share whatever I can think of...

I also am having similar symptoms after having anterior hip replacement surgery on my right hip on 6/8/15, followed by 2 hip disocations on 6/20/15 and 6/28/15. Both my surgeon and the ER orthopedic doctor told me I would probably have pain for 6 weeks. It's been almost 5 months now since my last dislocation and the pain is still bad. I've been taking Cymbalta and Etodolac plus Extra Strength Tylenol. Physical therapy exercises were not helping so my PT did massage and Laser treatments for 4 weeks. I saw a Rheumatoligist who recommended a higher dose of Cymbalta (was at 20 mg & now at 50 mg and will increase to 60 mg next week) but still no relief. I decided to see my chiropractor who has been performing muscle stimulation, massage and Active Release Therapy (ART) between my right knee and thigh in an attempt to release the muscles which are still so tight that I have pain when trying to stand up after stooping or bending. My chiro feels her treatments will help. I've had 2 and 3 more are scheduled. She also told me I should go back to PT and request more laser treatments which sould also help. I do feel better after the treatments but then the pain returns. I hope that I will eventually feel better after I have several more treatments.

WOW. really sucks. You are doing alot and still in major pain. I am the same way. PT. Advill 800 MG -three times a day and as soon as the med wears off back to a10 pain. It sounds like if we had hip arthritis we would be better off. Just a new hip and you are all set but arthitis is not the issue right?

Thanks for your post. Please read my latest post just today. I hope it may help. Actually, I have learned that arthritis is still a very big issue for me--in my back again--after major back surgery in Oct, 2011 when my L4 disc was totally disintigrated from arthritis & L5 was herniated and hitting the sciatic nerve in my spinal column. Those 2 were fused & 6 titanium screws inserted. After another MRI, I havae been informed that that surgery has held up well and my right hip replacement surgery has healed well, but now my L3 disc is being chewed up by arthritis. I don't know if it will stop there so I am waiting as long as possible before any more back surgery & hoping that the epidural cortisone injections in my spine will continue to relieve my pain. Just had one on 12/21/15 and am feeling great again now, even at age 68. But age is just a state of mind and I don't feel that old so I don't think about my age, and try to remain upbeat & positive and try not to let the pain get me down. Hope you can do the same. Prior to my injection, I was taking Meloxican for pain plus 1/2 5/325 Norco when pain was too bad plus an arthritis acetamenophene (Tylenol) 650 mg per tablet + regular 500 mg acetomenophene and rapid release gel caps 500 mg. The maximum recommended per day is 4,000 mg & that is what I would take plus using essential oils for arthritis and muscle relief, Physical therapy exercises, massage & laser treatments, chiropractic massage & muscle stimulation, anything I could think of which might help. So don't give up and keep searching until you find the remedy. I hope you find it soon because it can be frustrating!!
