trochanteric bursitis

hello, I am 49 and was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis few months ago. I have started with strong pain on the upper outer side of my thight list January and after several attempts following MRI results I was prescribed with Cymbalta 60mg/day. I am on this medication (+ sulpadol) since March 2014. I also underwent to a nerve block procedure on April 23, 2014. I had physio agopunture and muscle stimulation. Although the pain has slighltly dininished, I am still experiencing discomfort. I work as Sr Engineer and spend most of my day at my desk. walk in the evening and doingo some exercising when I have time......

I have recently moved to UK from Ireland (were I received treatment indicated above) and was wondering if there is anything else that I should do to help with resolution of this problem.

thank you in advance

regards

Monica

Hi Monica. Haven't been in here for a while, but pleased to hear that your surgery went well! smile

My Troch is slowly getting better. I had an injection a couple of months back, and it has been up and down. Pain in generaL IS LESS, BUT SOME DAYS ARE BAD...FOR NO APPARENT REASON! bIT FRUSTRATING. hAVE HAD TWO DAYS IN A ROW (TODAY BEING DAY TWO) WHEN i HAVE HAD A VERY GOOD DAY...sorry...must have hit caps lock...so am hoping that I can now rest as much as possible during the next couple of weeks (I am a Dog Walker, so complete rest isn't possible!) while it is quiet over the festive hols. Thanks for the foam roller tip...will give that a go. I find if I can sit at my computer with my left leg out straight, I don't aggravate it. All these little things must help. Am also now on a diet, as I am about 15lbs overweight (catch 22 isn't it...need to rest, but put on weight...extra weight upsets the Troch!). Extra weight definitely makes it worse...had to carry some heavy shopping a few weeks back, and my Troch gave me hell!

Foam roller is great but very hard  to do if you do not have strong arms to hold yourself up. Right?

I have heard you can use the wall if its not easy. Not had a chance to try foam roller yet, but got on ok with a tennis ball.

I have  a lacross ball. Works well against the wall. I wish I could do the foam roller. I will need to keep trying!! Cheers.

Hello Monica and all, I am new to this site.  I never knew anything about Bursitis until last fall when I was diagnosed with it at a consult with an Orthopedist when a limp went on for months and I needed to understand what it was.  I have Bursitis in my right hip. That was all the physician with the poor bedside manner told me, no explanations, or recommendations or prescriptions....I did not go back to him.  I take pain medication for several issues but learned that the narcotic pain medication I take had no effect on the pain from the bursa. I now know that simple aspirin helps address that pain well and I am very thankful for that.  I do not know what caused this Bursitis and since I can no longer sleep on my right side I am fearful it will develop in my left hip as well in which case I guess I will have to sleep in a hammock for the rest of my life or perhaps go back to the old waterbeds from the 1970's.  I also take Cymbalta and I find it is very effective for what it is prescribed for:  Depression and primarily Peripheal Neuropathy which is one of the symbtoms I developed after being implanted with Johnson & Johnson/Ethicon pelvic mesh implanted to support bladder, etc.  I do not have the sense that Cymbalta addresses other kinds of pain though.  I must add that I am very dismayed to learn I now have yet another source of pain to contend with and grow weary from it all.  Trying to stay cheerful, hopeful and count my blessings.  At least the little bursas can be removed if necessary and they also grow back which seems odd. I wonder at what the causal factor is and the only thing I can think of is arthritis which the literature suggests can be one. Hope this is helpful to some out there.

I have also been diagnosed with hip bursitis, can you tell me what makes it better, if anything, also if your heel is slightly raised in a shoe, would that make the bursitis feel worse

Hi Debbru, I would not put anything in my shoe to raise my heel unless a orthapedist told you to because it will throw off your whole body alignment.  There may be some good reasons to do that sometimes but only under a doctors care. With regard to the Bursitis I found that narcotic pain medication had no effect on it and I was told that for that pain I should take aspirin and that works.  You know you need to be careful how you use aspirin too, right. Please read about it if you are unsure.  If the Bursitis which can "flare" is really bad constantly they can surgically do something...I can not remember if they can remove it and it grows back, or they reduce the size of it. You should look at images of it to know what it looks like. They are in several areas all over the body, BTW.  I have to lay on my left side when I sleep or sometimes I can put a pillow under my tummy and sleep sort of on my right side.  Hope this helps you. Take care.

Thank you for your reply, sorry I haven't responded. Nothing has worked for me, not even medications.
