Trouble swallowing

Hi everyone hope you can help me.

I have had for a few months the feeling that something is stuck in my throat and it won't go down . I have gone to the GP ( 2 of them), to be told it could be silent reflux/ post Nasal drip/ anxiety /sinisus and menopause.

I have had s endoscope 2 years ago and only reflux and a H / hernia.

I'm starting to stress out what can this be. I also experience at times heavy chest. Dry mouth also.

Has anyone had this please let me know and what you did for it.

Hi Rosedee, just wondered if this issue resolved itself. I have hiatus hernia and reflux. Also in perimenopause. Suffering dry throat and lump in throat.

Would love to know what has helped you. Thank you

hi ladies - not sure if you will get this two years later - or if you are still struggling. I can tell you that swallowing problems (sometimes it feels like the muscles in my throat wont move properly/a bit numb or slow; and other times its a lump feeling; or sometimes because my throat is too dry) and the neck pain; sometimes chest pain and hard to breathe; acid; dizziness; dry mouth and sinus issues etc. are all caused by hormones. My symptoms all started as soon as I had my ovaries removed. For other ladies it starts during natural menopause. I've done so much research and seen so many specialists. Your thyroid also plays a part I think. Anyone with these symptoms and thyroid swelling or issues? I am on HrT now (estrogen only) - and some days it eases when my estrogen levels are balanced / but if my estrogen goes too low or if it rises too quickly - I experience the symptoms again. In natural menopause or surgical menopause or hormone imbalance (due to other underlying conditions) - our hormone levels are rising and falling daily (instead of being nice and steady like they used to be. This rise/fall causes the symptoms. Estrogen is responsible for protecting heart; bone and brain health - it is responsible for health down to a cellular level in womens bodies. If our hormones are out of whack it can affect pituitary balance and other hormones and chemicals in the body. Testosterone (also produced by womens ovaries - in fact 3 x as much testosterone is produced by healthy ovaries, as estrogen) - is responsible for muscle health; libido and sense of wellbeing. if estrogen and testosterone are in short supply or imbalanced muscles can start to atrophy and normally lubricated areas dry up or mucus thickens. so many health implications.

im so relieved to hear this is all part of the process. what can be done to relieve symptoms? Is it anxiety that needs addressing or is it a physical drying effect? Will it eventually go away? lump in the throat making it diffucult to swallow mostly at night.

      Hi -

You've describe me to a T. All of the women on this site, I've been freaking out for nine months.

I've been to numerous doctor's(top ENT, GI, OBGYN and testing- no answers. I've been wondering about menopause. I'm in San Diego. I've been looking for a good hormone specialist. If your in the area did you find a good doctor?

Any advice I can get from anyone i'd be so grateful. My family has had enough of me. . I got epilepsy at 51, now this. I've never been sick , I have to get well. my family can't handle me.

      Has anyone's completely gone away?

It could be a goiter. Thyroid issues are common in peri and menopause. I was advised to up my iodine intake, and taking a vitamin, and eating foods high in iodine seem to help with that. I do have some reflux, but I've had that for years. This is different. I'd investigate thyroid issues though.

My symptoms have gone away after a few weeks of suffering the same symptoms you are experiencing , one morning I woke up and didn't feel it anymore. However I do have the flu like symptoms which comes and goes. I'm having a fairly good day today. Very mild symptoms. Thanks God.

    Hi

My issues went as quickly as they came . i do however believe that going through the menopause comes with a variety of weird & wonderful issues that thankfully do eventually go away . I agree that plenty of rest , eating healthy & exercising helps a lot & being a working grandmother & combining work with child care can leave you exhausted hence our bodies will start to complain with all the changes going on . Thankfully i am out the other side now but don't dwell on every different pain etc you get just try to stay positive & things do eventually get better . Hope this helps ..

    Hello,

Just reading your post and I am suffering from these symptoms too, particularly the swallow and digestive problems, combined with a small lymph node in my neck which has sent me into a right spin. I'm not usually an anxious person but this has worried me sick. I am 48 and though periods are regular I'm certain I'm in the peri menopause. Any advice ladies? I would be very grateful X

I'm hoping this might help someone. This is just MY personal experience, I'm not recommending anyone take anything without consulting a specialist.

I kept chocking on my food and felt like I had a lump in my throat/esophagus, doctors said acid reflux but nothing they gave me solved it. I finally saw a dietitian and she said the opposite, lack of acid, she prescribed Betaine and said if it really is low of acid this will improve it very quickly and it did!!! about 3 days after I started, all the symptoms I had in my throat for months completely disappeared.

I get this! It's when I start to panic and I'm trying to breathe heavily... The only way it went away is when I calmed down. 😦
