TURP

Help. I am in considerable pain tonight. I had a TURP done about 61/2 years ago and I have had problems since then. Been to many Doctors. My present Urologist has sent me for pelvic physical therapy. During my last visit my therapist pressed on my prostate and the hit the exact spot where the pain seems to be generating from. The thinking being that it could be scar tissue from the surgery over 6 years ago. I am getting sick of being in constant discomfort for the last 61/2 years. Nobody ever mentioned scar tissue to me before and I just want to PLEASE have my life back. My current urologist did mention the possibility of having the prostate out over the course of time if nothing else works. I do wonder why I have to find out about the scar tissue 61/2 years after surgery. Why could I have not found out about this sooner?  I will do whatever I'm told. I just want to Get Better. I'm scared. I've been told this is prostatitis, but I just don't know. No man out there should know the amount of discomfort I have endured for the last half dozen years I have had this. I do prey when my current urologist does see me next month he will do everything in his power to please help me and make me well again. I have faith in him. I just don't know why it took so long when nobody seemed to care. Does anybody on here understand how i feel and just maybe have a little compassion for someone who has suffered for and recieved little sympathy from the medical profession for so very long. I do need understanding friends and any helpful advise anyone may care to give me and connection with anyone who has gone through anything familiar such as mine. As I said I am scared right now and would like positive, not negative feedback. I do very much want to get better and live my life once again. Awful feeling of discomfort down in the pelvic area. Could this be scar tissue????

See a different urologist, and if that one can't help, see another and another until you get relief.

Please state where you are, and maybe someone on this site can recommend someone.

I am near Orlando, Neal. I am trying everything I can.  Could the dr. up in NY have made a mistake?

Not so much a mistake as not pursuing your problem until it was resolved, and if he can't resolve it, he should have referred you to some other doctor who can. He is not finding answers and solutions for you, and that's why I'm suggesting that you fire him and get someone else who is motivated and competent. You don't have to settle for the crap you have been getting from him. Someone else on here suggested that you go to a major medical center. I think that is a good idea. There is Mayo in Jacksonville, and University of Miami in Miami. There are probably others in your area, so pursue one of them, and get the help you deserve.

Have they tried a long round of antibiotics? Even if your culture is negaive, antibiotics still may have value. I believe the condition is called non-bacterial prostatitis. Certainly not a doctor, and not saying this is what you have, but I would start with less invasive therapies such as this before having your prostate removed. And if you haven't gotten a second opinion, I'd go for that before any surgery.

I have tried antibiotics, my friend. They do not work. I was on antibiotics for a num. of years and I developed c-dif as a result of this. I had rectal bleeding as a result of being on the antibiotics for too long. Had to take probiotics to get my system back to par because the antibiotics destroyed all the good bacteria. It's a scary situation. I just don't know what else to do. If you have any other sugestions please let me know, jimjames. I'm at wits end. I can't take this feeling much longer??         Steve

Prostatitis can be a very vexing problem, if that is what it is. I had prolonged bouts of prosttitis from my 20's to 40's and then it just seemed to go away by itself. How old are you?

Don't know what kind of health coverage you have, but if you can afford it I would do a little research and seek out several more opinions from urologists. A place like Mayo or Cleveland Clinic might be a good idea, assuming you're in the states.

If it is scar tissue causing the pain, then I guess they will either have to remove it or shrink it, assuming that is possible. But just because you have scar tissue and pain doesn't mean that the scar tissue is causing the pain. So, if it were me, I'd really get more opnion and look for other options before just removing the prostate.

Prostatitis or scar tissue. That's the big question, my friend. I'm going to have to leave it in my Urologists hands. He wants to take several small kidney stones out, but I don't think that is what's causing the problem.I would just like to be discomfort free and feel like my normal self once again. I am 65.

Urologists, even "good" ones, make diagnostic mistakes every day. That's why 2nd and 3rd opinions plus your own independent research, including reading other people's experiences at places like this are so important. At the end of the day, the only person's hands you should leave these decisions to are you own. That's because it's your prostate and only you will be affected by the consequences of whatever action a doctor takes.

I agree with Jim, and from what I've heard, whether or not the stones are causing urinary problems now, if they pass, or try to pass in the future, you will definitely wish you had gotten them out under general anesthesia, because passing them without general anesthesia hurts like hell!

A lot of times men have Turps. They give their consents, but they really don't give their consents. It's just that their in pain and they want the pain to stop. The Urologists should understand this and not go through with the surgery. If the patient doesn't need the Turp, then the Dr. should do whatever is necessary to get that patient peeing again and No More. A dr. takes an oath. Do No Harm and the Drs. should follow this. Shame on Them. Maybe there is a higher power that these drs. will have to answer to someday for their Experiments !!
