Turp experience and questions

Hi there,
JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)
For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.
Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.
While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.
Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and was allowed to go home that day at midday.
I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long? it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)
Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain) Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?
Thanks for reading,
Henry

Hi Henry, I had the turp done 7 months ago and I'm dealing with the burning feeling when I pee, The doctor prescribed Uribel capsules that work very well. The doctor wants to do a second surgery to remove scar tissue that according to him is causing the problem. I'm not in a hurry to go thru that pain again so I'm considering my options. I just starting taking a herbal supplement called "stinging Nettle Root" and hope that this will work for me. Good luck.

Pleased to have found this forum and to find that I am not alone in the pain and discomfort I have experienced since having a TURP some 6 weeks ago. I was due to have a bladder stone removed and TURP carried out at the same time but the stone proved too large to be dealt with mechanically. This is now going to be dealt with by laser on 1/11/17.
I have a greatly improved flow but it is still not a lot, I am hoping this will improve once stone has been removed ? Still blood in urine and feels like I'm passing glass each time I need to go, usually every 1-2 hours.? Cant do much as movement, walking quickly, heavy lifting etc aggravates the need to pass water and increases the amount of blood in my urine. I was quite worried but it appears, from the comments on this thread, that this is all fairly normal, so thanks ! I will advise any further changes and on progress once stone has been dealt with and hope that my comments will be beneficial to anyone else goi

All I can say is I'm sure glad I didn't discover or read through this forum before my TURP procedure... I probably would have cancelled it.
In regards to some of the replies I've read, the analogy that comes to mind is... when a person has a bad meal or experience at a particular restaurant. In most cases the person will mention it to many others in various discussions as the weeks go by. But when a person has a good meal they will probably not mention the experience to anyone.
The reason for my reply is to help calm the fears of anyone considering or in the process of being scheduled to have the TURP procedure. In my case I discovered this forum "after" my procedure when searching the net to find an answer to the question "Are my recovery symptoms normal?"
I feel terrible for the people I've read about having terrible complications, especially since I seem to be on the other side of the average. My TURP procedure was 4 weeks ago. I wasn't keen on the idea of a spinal tap (I didn't want to hear what was going on in the operating room during the procedure) so I chose to be knocked out. In getting ready for the procedure I was told I would spend the night in the hospital so my recovery progress could be monitored. Anyway when I woke up from surgery I was sporting the dreaded Foley catheter. The good news was my doctor said the procedure went very smooth and bleeding was minimal. The urine in the catheter bag was pink indicating minimal blood. As a result he let me go home the same day. I went into the OR at 8AM and was back home six hours later. The following day I went into his office to have the catheter removed. NET: I only had to wear it for 25 hours total. He mentioned I would be passing blood and clots when I urinate but it was normal and would last one to two months. He said I should pick up an over the counter drug called AZO for discomfort caused by the catheter. I picked it up at Walmart (cheapest place to get it) approx $4 for 12 caplets. They definitely work at reducing the irritation felt when urinating. Anyway, I didn't have any pain or discomfort from the TURP procedure other than a couple bladder spasms before the catheter was removed and the pain / burning sensation when urinating. I'm still passing small clots and occasional minimal blood but I was thinking after four weeks the burning sensation when urinating should be gone by now. So... I'm glad i found this forum if only to know the burning sensation is normal and not uncommon to go on for several months.
FYI: I should probably point out my prostate was not enlarged, nor have I ever had any problems urinating or having to wake up multiple times in the night to go to the bathroom. At 69 years old I considered myself lucky in regards to my prostate... until last month when I saw blood in my urine! The urologists (using a Cystoscopy and Bladder Scope) discovered a tumor in my bladder. He wanted to remove it ASAP and scheduled the surgery. He said the only problem was the tumor was on the side of the bladder adjacent to the prostate. The instrument used to remove bladder tumors can't do a sharp 180 degree turn so he would have to perform a TURP procedure so he could access to the tumor. The other good news is the tumor was contained. No cancer in any of the surrounding tissue. He said I was fortunate to have caught it in time, although it means I now I get to have a yearly Cystoscopy appointment to make sure it doesn't grow back etc. The TURP and bladder surgery was a piece of cake. Now just looking forward to peeing without the burning sensation.

In 2015 I had a TURP to stop bleeding. The TURP technology can be used for more than shaving the prostate. It allows the urologist to view the inside of the prostate and bladder, trim, remove or cauterize tissue.

Keep in mind that there is always bias on medical-type forums; generally the folks posting are the ones who have had really bad outcomes.
Fortunately, a procedure like the TURP has been around for a long time (albeit with some modifications), and the vast majority of folks who have had it have had good results.

I just wanted to share my experience with Turp surgery. I am 77 years old and have always experienced good health. But for as long as I can remember I have always had slow flow, trouble starting and frequent urination. January 2017 I had knee replacement which went very well. But, when I was ready to leave the hospital the day after the surgery I could not pee. Hospital inserted a Foley and sent me to a urologist. Can’t say I really cared for him. He put me on intermittent catheters three times a day and suggested that as a remedy. After about six months and 600 times cathing I decided that this was BS. I found the urologist I liked and had the TURP procedure done August 1. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I got out of the hospital the next day, had very little bleeding and just Peed chunks for a few days. No pain or burning.
Then three months later all of a sudden I am back to square one. At that point I had total blockage and even the urologist could not insert a catheter. So he sent me home over the weekend with a tube through my stomach into the bladder. That was very uncomfortable but I survived. He did outpatient surgery the following week to clean out scar tissue. Once again no pain or bleeding. He told me that 70% of the procedures need a redo. After that 35% need a redo. He said I was now in the 35% category.
Anyway, for me it’s all good. I know Turp is scary and I had missgivings at first but it’s all OK.
As a footnote the sex is still great but the retro ejaculation takes a little bit of getting used to.
Also a little tip. If you need Viagra or Cialis ask your urologist to prescribe Sildenafil.
It is the generic for Cialis cost about a 10th as much.
Good luck,
John

Hello all it's been 16 days since my TUVP surgery and not doing well at all. I was sent home 4 hours after surgery with a cath that never felt good. Went back to ER 8 hours later when it stopped up from blood clots and had it flushed out. My biggest problem now is the burning and bladder spasms. When I say bad I mean passing out bad. I try to pee but the pain gets so intense I have to get up and the flow stops. This goes on 4 or 5 times an hour till my bladder is partially empty.
Went back to ER today and they found I now have a bacterial infection. They gave my Phenazopyridine for the burning, Cephalexin for the infection and Tramadol for the pain.
Anybody else have problems like this? Is it normal or should I find a new doc?

Wow sorry to hear you are having a difficult time. You're probable thinking you were better off before surgery. I will tell you everyone is different, we all have different outcomes, we all heal at different rates. For me I had the Green Light laser surgery a few years ago. They took catheter out too soon so I was rush back to hospital 2X in three days. About 6 months later I had to get the TURP surgery as the Green Light didn't work. The TURP worked better but now, 2 years post op, I go to bathroom more than I thought I would.
I hope things get better for you.....trust me, I know exactly how you feel.

john - nope was not on antibiotic prior to surgery. I requested it but my urologist said it wasn't necessary.
My surgery was done in the local hospital that is only a few months old and very clean . . .
Thanks,
Joe
