Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

Happy things worked out well for you. The thing I most feared was the retro, but it never bothered me or affected my enjoyment of sex.

I was told by my Doc that I may have some bleeding over the next few days and scab and scar tissue formed. Nothing to really worry about unless it continues he said.

If the bleeding looks like wine, it's blood colored pee. Can last sporadically for 6 to 8 weeks. Probably nothing to worry about. But If the blood looks like marinara sauce it is fresh blood. If you pee fresh blood in a paper cup it will clot on top. That can be a problem. Blood colored pee won't clot and is just a small amount of blood coloring the pee.

I'm 72 and had TURP last April. Bleeding and clots stopped at about 9 weeks after surgery. I would go several days with clear urine and then it would turn red and out came a clot. Then it would be clear again. Urine was tinted red. It was not like I was passing blood. I had no pain urinating after 3 days and did not have to take medicine after surgery except for 1 week of antibiotics.

      Hello sir,

Thank you for such quick response.

Please suggest based on the below picture. Is the colour of urine is normal. Today it's day 21.

I’m not a doctor or an expert in these things but it looks to me like it’s OK except that you’re not drinking enough water. It’s too dark.

The color on your picture is showing up as orange on my computer. My urine was colored light red. It was scary to go several days with clear urine and then it would come out pink to red. Sort of like a nose bleed. Everything going good for a few days and then all of sudden your nose begins to bleed. You stop it, blow the clot out, and then good again. It didn't matter what I did. I could sit in a chair watching TV for a few days and then urinate red. Or, I start working out on a stationary bike or treadmill without bleeding for a few days and then BAM, red again. Note -- I stayed off exercising until week 6.

The picture is hard to see. If it is that orange I agree your Dad should be drinking more water, at least a couple of liters a day of water to clean out the bladder and urethra. If he is passing fresh blood, then within a few minutes of  being in the cup the top of the liquid in the cup will clot over with a film (the way boiled milk will form a film on top as it cools in a cup). If the urine in the cup remains liquid, then it is not fresh blood.
