Turp experience and questions

Hi there,
JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)
For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.
Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.
While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.
Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and was allowed to go home that day at midday.
I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long? it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)
Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain) Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?
Thanks for reading,
Henry

I had to undergo TURP in late May 2017 and bleeding and discomfort diminished by 3rd week. Antibiotics & pain killers administered for 3 days. But minor discomfort, though not a great pain prevailed for months, Seven months after the procedure yesterday I got follow-up test results as follows:
PSA ; 2.45
average flow rate: 29 ml/s
Maximum flow rate: 47 ml/s
Creatinine: 0.97
Pre-void volume: 820 ml (I drank nearly 2 ltr of water before the scan)
Post-void residual volume: nil
I can hold it for 4-5 hours. No night time bat room visits.

When I had UTI's I couldn't stop going. Not going sounds like an obstruction of some sort. When I had foley catheters after two Green Light lasers 18 months apart, I got to the point I was peeing with a greater force than the foley could take so I was peeing outside the foley tube into my underwear. At that point it was time to take out the foley. I never had swelling but I did at one point several months after a GL have a stricture that my urologist cut out. If your urologist takes a look inside with the cystoscope, he should be able to figure out what is happening, and whether it is happening in the urethra, the bladder mouth or the bladder.

Hey Henry,
After my TURP, I had a UTI that took a good while to get rid of, ie more than a couple of weeks. The infection definitely caused problems urinating. The tissue became so inflamed that I ended up in the ER because I couldn't urinate and couldn't get a catheter in. Finally after a couple of nurses efforts, they managed to get a catheter in and drain my bladder...to the tune of 1200ml. An infection can definitely cause a blockage due to swelling of tissue.
Frequency of urination after surgery is quite common. The TURP burns away tissue and just as a burn to the skin of your body requires time to heal and form a new dermis, so does the surface of the tissue within the prostate. Expect several weeks of symptoms before your body starts to calm down. Some guys go through these procedures with minimal symptoms but many don't. Reactions to the surgery are myriad.

What is your worry? The prostate is not near the penis. It's about 8 to 10 inches further up the urethra, just below your bladder.

Ohhhh - but isn't it a wonderful feeling! I can now actually urinate instead of dribble-dribble-dribble for 10 minutes, jump back into bed and fall asleep. I'm 10 months since my turp. I now get up on average 2x per night. It was around 4x at 6 months. If I'm curled up while laying on my side and then stretch out onto my back I get the feeling to urinate. Also, the interval during the day has extended. Certainly nothing like my grandchildren who can hold it all day, but now it is just a potty check if I'm going out of the house.

I had a turp almost 3 years ago after two only partially successful Green Light laser surgeries. I generally go 3 to 4 hours between urinations during the day, and 1 to 3 hours at night. My post void residual is only 32mls., and I'm not blocked and have a decent stream, so I am emptying. I find I often need to urinate twice within 10 minutes or so before I go to bed at midnight. Also have to wait about 30 seconds after urinating as I get some more dribbles before I'm completely done. Lying down seems to get the kidneys producing in some older people, me included. I feel like I need to urinate again an hour or so after I go to bed. I urinate once or twice while getting ready for bed, and I listen to the radio in bed for about an hour to get sleepy, and just before I go to sleep I'll urinate again, even though its only 150 mls or so. I use a couple of bedside 1 liter urinals in a basket so I can go in the dark sitting on the edge of the bed, and not wake myself up. I'll normally wake again after two hours, then again after 3 hours, then after another 2 or 3 hours. I go less often during the day so lying prone has an effect on feeling like I have to go. If I take a one hour nap in my recliner during the day, I need to go as soon as I get up. I think it has something to do with being older (I'm in my 70's), my bladder and kidneys rather than the prostate at this point.
