Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

I had a bipolar TURP 2 weeks ago.  Recovery has been easy.  Discharge from hospital after 24 hours. A little discomfort urinating at first.  Pain meds for about a day.  Able to resume light exercise within 5 days.  Riding a bike and working out after a week.  A little soreness when urinating but not bad - passeds after about 10 seconds.  I am able to pee like a young man which is great.  It now takes about 20 seconds to empty bladder rather than 2 minutes.  Still awaken to pee 3x per night (used to be 4-5x per night). Dr. said that that would be the last symptom to change. Urge to pee is stronger when I exercise.  Ejaculation is less than before but not fully retrograde. I am 60 and in good shape which may have affected my outcome.  So far I am very glad I had the procedure.  I had a large medial lobe so urolift was not an option.

Yer,had surgery 11 June 2018.I have for as long can remember having urination issues. Some say it’s stage fright and partially correct.4 years ago I suddenly started to urinate lesss and less causing toilet visits every hour or so and toilet visits 6 to 8 times a night while in bed.I saw my specialist who inserted the camera in to the old fella and could see that the prostate was enlarged but not severely. He prescribed a medication called Flomaxtra which did the job but I’d say to 80%.I took this for 4 years and now the medication is failing.I had the operation a few days ago(Monday).Came out of surgery with catheter inserted.I drank plenty of water and by the next morning the fluids that were washing me out via the catheter was turned off as urine was the desired colour. At 4am on the third day the catheter was pulled out and I drank up to 2 litres of water with in the next hour and a half or so.I passed the urine and was given the bladder scan where I passed.I have had no pain throuought this ordeal.I have been home now for 3 days and have been getting the urge to urinate but have been this is normal. As I havent stored up enough urine to have a good long p**s,I have been p*****g small amounts on the regular urges.I expect that in the next few weeks things shall return back to normal and I can’t wait for that.

      Dear Kevin,

I had to undergo TURP on 4th June 2017.  During first few weeks after surgery my bladder behaved strangely. But at the end of 3rd week things became fairly normal.  However, it takes months to feel all OK. Now, one year after the surgery I feel good except for having that famous side effect.

Agree with your details, but it will take +\- 1 year to get back to normal and the bad news is, that after 10 years you might have to repeat the process. Wishing you a good recovery.

Do you know was it a monopolar or bipolar TURP?  And did you have a 1 night hospital stay or longer?

Ok,been taking Flomaxtra last 4 or so years, that medication also causes that so I’m used to it.Its important how we take for granted to have a normal decent p**s so rather have that if I have have to trade.

Cheers and thanks for the info,

      Kevin.

It took about 2 minutes to empty my bladder before the procedure and always had a large residual volume more than 300 ml. Tests done after 6 months showed much improvement (i.e residual volume ~15 cc and time for emptying ~ 20 seconds) . Your doctor may ask you to have these tests after 4 weeks.

It seems to me that guys having a TURP experience a pretty wide array of recovery symptoms.  I'm 66 and had mine in August 2017.  My prostate was over 100g so my surgical options were limited.  I was absolutely miserable for about 2 months after the surgery.  Infections, Depends diapers 24/7 as I would never know when there would be a sudden release.  It was depressing.  This included one hellish night in particular where I had to get up 22 times during an 8 hour attempt to sleep.  I would have been better off sleeping on the toilet.  But finally I emerged from the dark forest of prostate despair and things settled into a new normal.

My new normal is like this:  I am lucky in that I'm not retaining much in the bladder, 0 - 50cc.  I never really had pain passing urine except for an occasional mild burn.  I still have to get up 2-4 times per night which I am not happy about but I've been getting up at least that many times for years so it's nothing new.  The retrograde ejaculation is disappointing BUT about half the time, my orgasm lasts longer - sometimes for 30 seconds or so.  So that was an interesting trade off.  I feel like I am still healing nearly a year later.  My bladder was stretched out and held well over 1000 ml of urine.  I was told that it likely would never go back to normal but I feel like it's rebounded to a much reduced size.  I now know that a TURP is a serious surgery for a serious condition and it can have a variety of outcomes.

Best of luck to all.  This senior path is not for the feint of heart.  And for you younger fellas experiencing these conditions, my heart truly goes out to you.
