Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

    Hi All,

This is John 12552 who started all this discussion. Just to refresh about my post, three years ago here goes. My problem was brought on by knee replacement. Ready to leave the hospital and cannot pee. oops! you are not leaving.... Finally left with a foley. After 6 months of in-out cathing three times a day I had the turp. Good results but had to redo it 4 months later. Since then, no problem. Peeing like a race horse, no pain and great sexual function. The secret? Good genetics, Healthy eating, exercise, good sleep habits, no smoking, light alcohol use and a good woman for a partner.

Oh, did I mention that I will be 80 years old next year, my wife is 75 and we have been married for 48 years?.

I guess I am the poster child for turp

    Happy New Year

    John 12552

@john12552 Actually you are the poster child for the SECOND turp. I am a poster child for the THIRD turp.

I'm 52 years old and have been dealing with BPH symptoms for over 10 years, so yes, younger than the typical profile. Taking Flomax for over 10 years, having to pee on average once an hour with urgency, and at night getting up 3-4 times for years and years. Reading people's responses here definitely scared me a bit about TURP and being engaged, the potential impact sexually definitely was a concern. But about 6 weeks ago, I found my symptoms escalating to the point where I had no other choice. I could no longer pee at all and had to self catheter. My prostate had completely surrounded my urethra and bladder to the point that I couldn't go. So, I went ahead with TURP with green laser on January 22nd. The next morning after the surgery, after they removed the catheter to see if I could pee, I was amazed to find myself peeing with exceptional force. It might have been over 20 years since I'd peed like that. Very little blood, no burning and very little urgency. So, I went home. What a huge huge difference. After 2 weeks, was able to have sex, and I was very concerned about the retro grade ejaculation, how it would feel, what impact it would have on the sex life of someone engaged to be married with a very active sex life. And even there, I didn't notice really any difference at all, which was wonderful. After 3 weeks, took a cross country flight and only had to pee once on a 5 1/2 hour flight and without any urgency. And last night, for the first time, only had to get up once to pee. So, in the end, couldn't be happier about the overall results. Still very early, will have been 4 weeks tomorrow, but you just don't seem to hear very many 100% positive outcomes of TURP, so wanted to share mine if there's anyone out there worrying like I did about whether to do it or not.

Had mine at 76 Due to knee replacement and could'nt pee. Same results as you after surgery. I've been very happy with it. Just one glitch.Had to do it again. You will have a 70% chance of doing it twice. A 30% chance of a third time. Don't be disappointed if you have to do it again. It is well worth doing it.

P.S. the sex life is still good at 80

Thanks, I appreciate that! Yes, after having it done, and seeing the results, i would not hesitate to get it done again if it was needed.

Bi-Polar TURP has a 7-15 year guarantee for 93%, newer procedures have only 5 years.

TURP remains the standard treatment for BPH and has improved over the years it is is now Bi-Polar TURP very similiar to Green Light, with Green Light you can't take tissue samples, as far as success, you can't beat a 93% success rate.

I had two greenlights and a turp in 5 years. The first greenlight left wme with a 250ml PVR - post void residual. The second greenlight left me with a 100ml PVR. The turp left me with a 34ml PVR. You can get a sonogram which will check your PVR. Due to years of BPH, the bladder becomes muscularized and the capacity decreases. If, for example, your bladder capacity is 300ml, and your PVR is 250, you will be peeing 50ml all day long.

I am from a distant country called Sri Lanka. I had to undergo TURP surgery nearly 3 years ago (at the age of 61). My condition was severe before the surgery. I went into full retention twice. It was a dramatic improvement after TURP and still continue without any issues except for retro. My hospital stay was 48 hours and I fully recovered by end of 2nd week (no blood...no pain..).

..I had heavy bleeding and heavy pain on urination and extreme urgency and frequency for about 6 weeks. But I wasn't back to normal for 12 weeks. It's not uncommon for chunks of tissue to come out. In some cases a large chunk may stop you from urinating until it pops out. Lots of small debris, bloot cots, etc. is common. What I did for pain was to hyperventilate when I got spasms from the foley catheter which I wore for two weeks, and also while urinating after the foley was removed. It took my mind off it and the pain only lasted while urinating. Retro ejaculation was no big deal. In fact during my first ejaculation I forgot about it and couldn't understand why there was no ejaculate. It's been 4-1/2 years and my orgasms are just fine. The ejaculate is just rerouted into the bladder. At some point in the future you ought to get a sonogram to measure your PVR (post void residual), which is the ml. of urine left in the bladder after you pee. A good score is under 50. I had two greenlight lasers and a turp in 5 years. My PVR after the first GL was 250ml, after the second GL 150ml and after the turp 30ml. So only the turp was fully successful. However sonograms showed my prostate continued to grow so 6 mos after the turp I asked my urologist to prescribe dutasteride to limit future growth. I have take 0.5mg. per day. The urologist wanted to give me finasteride, but the dutasteride is stronger. I've had no side effects (no man breasts, or hair growth) and my PSA is down from a high of around 7 to 1.6. I'll stay on it for life.

Had the TURP procedure 4 weeks ago! Had BPH with prostate invading my bladder space. Prior I had weak stream and several apparent UTI's. Its all painless until you wake up! With the catheter in I drank water by the gallons, haven't been able to drink volumes for several years. But after 4 weeks, I am still in pain. I pee every 45 to 90 minutes typically. The penis is irritated from going so much and I still have spams in both the penis and the bladder. Control was good the first few weeks, but now I get drippings. Pain in the bladder after I start my stream. It feels like I have a full or irritated bladder when its not much their. I may have a scare tissue issue in the pee tube as well. I want to learn or understand how long recovery is, because at 4 weeks, I am not much better than week 3! Week one was Hell! Does it take 6 weeks? Do some feel great after 2-3 weeks? Can it take months? Oh yeah Urologist told me I didn't need the Flow meds post surgery.
