Turp experience and questions

Hi there,
JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)
For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.
Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.
While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.
Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and was allowed to go home that day at midday.
I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long? it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)
Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain) Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?
Thanks for reading,
Henry

I self cathed for about 3.5 years before getting medial lobe resected with TURP. Had foley cath in for 2 days and took it out two weeks ago. First 10 days were fairly easy with minimal bleeding. Lost my first scab 3 nights ago and bleeding heavy at night. Still taking 5 mg Terazosin. The rose wine pee is quite unnerving. I saw plenty of improvement, my pvr was solid 200 ml for 3.5 years of cathing. My max recorded was 500 ml. I have voided 400+ so far before the bleeding started. I am going to be as inactive as possible.

Joe,
Did you have only the median lobe resected ? Did you have retrograde ejaculation after ? Any other side effects ? Where was it done, and who was the doctor ?

Me experience with turp and bladder neck incursion has been dreadful. First 2 month i had pain, yes 2 month. Next 2 month ive got urgency to urinate and some nights cannot sleep. Woke up more than 30 times last night, this isnt an over statement. Urgency is constant and I cant live my life. I am at month 4 now and I doubt it will get better without other procedures. Also suffering from retrograde ejaculation which makes you inferior and feel like crap. Wish I never had TURP

I an 55 and had my TURP 10 days ago, so far so good. Great flow, urgency and pain are both miles better than pre-surgery. A bit of discomfort in the perineum, but nothing a regular tylenol cant handle.
Ironically, for the weeks leading up to the surgery I was completely focused (and worried) about improving my urinary symptoms. Now they are out of the way, my brain has switched to worrying about RE (which I wasn't even thinking of before). I have read both extremes - a handout from my specialist saying it makes no difference, all the way to horror stories about how ruins the fun. Can anyone comment from experience on this?

I think there will be a lot of people like me reading research on the best treatment for BPH so thought I would share my own experiences from a couple if years back based in UK. I had been suffering from BPH for a number of years with weak flow and difficulty urinating and was on medication that initially proved helpful but less effective over time. I then went in for a hernia operation which involves a catheter insertion and suffered urinary retention post-op. (Note I subsequently discovered this is not uncommon for men with enlarged prostates so consider this if you have BPH and surgery scheduled for a hernia!) Anyway, to cut a long story short three attempts to manage without a catheter were unsuccessful due to urinary retention and I accepted I needed surgery. I did a lot of research on options and risks, spoke to my sister who is a GP and with the consultant at the hospital. Although I did look at Holep/Greenlight etc I agreed on a TURP. I'll cover the details if the TURP in a separate post (to avoid making this on e too long) but jut to say it was a complete success. After living with a catheter for 6 months I can now pee like a 20 year old and the quality of my life has been transformed. No surgery is without risk and this is especially true of this type of surgery. However TURP remains the gold standard because it generally has the best success record and longest term benefit. If like me you have BPH and find meds aren't working I would give this serious consideration.

Hello,
Had a Turp exactly one week ago. I have a complication I am not finding a lot of info on.
Done as an outpatient, and the day after they removed the Catheter. I had a small stream then and a couple very small since but it seems like I am blocked up. I have to use a catheter to void. A couple times I got maybe a few ml and others a drop or two but usually nothing without a cath. I am not seeing anywhere that this is very common. I guess I am just looking for any insight or encouragement from anyone who knows or had this kind of situation. Doc says after some healing and the inflamation comes down I should have a good flow again.
I appreciate any comments.

Hello Alan if you have time look through some of my posts...I had turp two years ago and had to self cath for a some weeks afterwards...I was down and thought things would not improve...however two years later and I pee ok and without any need to self catheter...hang in there..the Bladder gets stronger and the urethra heals..things will get better..Turp is the best op to have..

I had a TURP done about 3 years ago. It took about 4 weeks for the bleeding to stop. I felt fine after that but I played safe and didn't engage in strenuous activity or bike riding for about 3 months. I did get a urinary infection during the first couple of weeks but that was cured very quickly with trimethoprim. I have had no further problems. Of course the prostate does grow back so I am hoping that the problem won't recur.

Greetings Everyone,
On my sixth week after TURP and so far, had the same challenges that have been written about. One thing that worked really well for me was drinking about one gallon of homemade and Ocean Spray cranberry juice every day. I noticed my urination became much easier and the spasms lessened. almost no blood in the urine after the first week. No blood clots after the first two days. I still have the short fuse syndrome.
One strange thing is that my urine has developed a very strong smell over the past week have not changed my diet, so I am wondering if this is from the blood clots, which have not passed yet.
Any feedback is appreciated

wjtu52, Strong small can mean Urinary Track Infection. If you have infection the urine will usually be cloudy also. You should get checked for UTI at a doctor's office. You can also buy "SIEMENS MULTISTIX 10 SG 100 TEST/REAGENT STRIPS" from Amazon or Ebay, and check it yourself.
