Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

Hello guys, I haven't chimed in for a while. No change in my symptoms, if anything maybe slightly better. I took one Jalyn a few weeks ago and another yesterday. It seemed that my flow was less than I'm comfortable with, but one pill and I'm ok.  Still taking one generic viagra at bedtime, usually, not always. Take two Ibroprofen Pm's to help me avoid the little urges to get up and go and I'm sleeping until 4AM, get up once and then sleep until 7 or so. During the day I have to go about every two hours or less. Not really urgent, I handle it ok. Going to see my uro next week, I want to know how much I'm retaining and whether it is enough that I have to worry about my kidneys. I'm experiencing no pain or embarrassment so my routine is working ok. I'm also walking vigorously 4-5 miles every other day. I know that's part of the secret. I bought some catheters and urinal bottles just in case i stop up and have to help myself. I don't really think there's much danger in that but I've got to learn how to do that. I appreciate everyone's input.

      Hi Ron,

It sounds like you are doing well. Remember to double void before they measure your PVR, so you get an accurate measure. Looking forward to hearing your results.

If you do have to cath there's a couple of catheter web sites that explain how to use the caths. The first time I cathed I got lubricant on my hand and it was too slippery to hold onto the cath. I had to use a fresh one. The surprising thing for me was it had to go in the whole 14 inch length of the cath to get to the urine. There was way more plumbing inside then I imagined.

I generally cathed standing next to a urinal bottle that I put in a small pail with a garbage bag liner on a closed toilet seat so I could direct the output into the urinal bottle to measure it. The trick is to insert and thread the cath gently until it gets started and continue to feed it in slowly. When you get to the prostate (about 4 inches from the end), there will be resistence that you will have to gently and slowly push past. There will be resistence again a couple of inches later at the bladder mouth. When you get urine go in about another half inch or so. When the urine stops, pul it out very slowly to get the last half inch of urine from the bladder, then pull it out slowly and steadilly all the way out.

I might have to try doing the Ibroprofen. I normally will get up and go after two hours but lately I find myself going pass  two hours then thinking in my sleep that I'm in the toilet only to let go a little bit, weeing myself a little bit then running to the toilet. Im hoping I wont have to sleep with a dependable.

I've been sleeping with a 1 liter disposable urinal next to my bed for several years now. Since I generally need to get up 3 to 4 times a night, and the urinal allows me to stand up in the dark, void, snap the cap back on the urinal, place the urinal back in a plastic bag lined basket, and get back to sleep in about a minute. In the morning I empty the urinal in the toilet, close it up in the plastic bag with a knot in the bag, and place it in the garbage. At night I rinse out the new urinal with dishwasher soap and water (besides making sure it is clean, it also checks for the occasional leak in the urinal). I buy the urinals in boxes of 50 for $25. I get them online from Allegro and generally have a 2 to 3 months supply in my garage.

I have been taking 2 motrin pm pills for years before bedtime and they allow me to sleep with only getting up once or twice a night. My gp tells me that is ok if it helps me. Just had turp surgery 30 days ago and am on the healing path, I still take the motrin pm everynight, I will be trying to wean myself off at the 6 week period to see how it do. When I went in for the surgery I was going every 30 minutes during the day, now I am able to last 2 hours during the day between urinating and am very happy  with my recovery. I have had the bph issue for over 8 years prior to surgery, and my uro tells me the longer the problem the longer the recovery. Be good.

Hope everything works out with you.  Sounds like you're on the right path.  Yep those first 4 weeks after TURP were tough.  For me I started to get bettter the 5th week.  BB

Thanks Bruno, the last couple of days have been very good regarding frequency. Today not so good, Not able to last 2 hours today, just about 75 minutes. Everyday is different, The last 2 days were so good I almost had to cry and today not as good. I guess it will just take longer to get to where I want to be. I was so good the last couple of days lasting 2 hours I thought my life was changing for the good. I guess patience will be my worst enemy. Thanks for the message and kind words. Be good.

Your doctor was correct. I had bph for 20 years and it took about 8 weeks to recover from the turp I had 18 months ago. Turp was superior to 2 Greenlight laser procedures I had prior. Hang in there.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the info, looking forward to more time and great results. Some guys on this site diss Turp and say why did I not go with a different process. I believe Turp was the best option for me to make sure my problem was fixed. I understand it could grow back but that should take years and I am ok with that if that happens. Be good.

Had Turp three weeks ago.  Urine flow has improved.   I am just concerned about constant bleeding, it clears some what after drinking plenty of liquids. No pain and no medication.  How long the bleeding would continue, this is my main question.

49 years old in the US (Texas) - just scheduled a TURP for this Friday.  Very nervous but hopeful to get some improvement from my symptoms (weak stream, frequent nightime wakeups, ED).  I've been on alfusozin (uroxotral) and finasteride for about seven months now.
