Turp experience and questions

Hi there,

JUst wanted to share my experience with my turp surgery. I'm 45yrs old, too young some say for me to having prostate issues but I put it down to my father side of the family (my father and uncles all currently suffer from enlarge prostates)

For the last couple of years been suffering from weak urine stream, having a full night sleep and waking up in the morning with the urge to go wee just to wee a small trickle. I also suffered from time to time having blood in the urine.

Went to see the Urologist, he did some testing, test on the strengh on my urine flow (very weak the doc said) he put a camera up my penis to see inside and we could see clearly that my prostate was enlarge and was putting pressure on my bladder which probably explained why sometimes I could see blood on my urine. I have a benign enlarged prostate, no cancer worries which is good.

While I decided if I wanted to have surgery, doctor put me on Avodart. It did help but I wasn't sure if I wanted to take antibiotics for the rest of my life. Avodart temporary reduces the size of the prostate but if you stop taking it, you will still have the same problem again and it will only get worse.

Dedided to have the surgery, I had it three weeks ago. spinal block, stayed in hospital one full day with a catheter inserted. Catheter was removed the following day in the morning, had to urine a few times into a container, followed by a scan machine pressed to my belly to see how much urine was left in the bladder. Passed the test and  was allowed to go home that day at midday.

I can see the immediate benefit of the surgery where my urine stream is very strong. When I get up in the morning with a full bladder, no more urine trickle, just a strong urine flow. On the other side, I'm still suffering from post surgery effects, for example, frequent urges to go to the toilet and pee ( I probably go every 40 to 60 minutes) blood on the urine and pain (burning/stinging) everytime I have to take a piss. The doctor says is normal for this symptoms to happen and it will take weeks before everything is back to normal. how long?  it depends on the individual. I can get an erection, it feels a bit different and I will suffer from retro ejaculation ( I was warned about this)

Anyone that had Turp done, how long it took until you where pain free? (no blood and pain)  Did you take any medicine to stop the pain or the bledding?

Thanks for reading,

Henry

      Hi pty10,

If you read through the posts it looks like most of the posters fro 6 months ago have gotten good results from whatever type of procedure they had. How are your results and how are you doing?

I'm good during the day and about 2 out of 3 nights. About one out of three nights I'm up all night with mad frequency and output of 2-1/2 to 3 -1/2 liters. The other two nights I sleep all night or just get up onece or twice with output of zero to a few hundred cc's and get right back to sleep. Currently underwent a battery of tests that showd nothing. Problably will be referred to internal medecine specialists next. Well, two out of three good nights isn't too bad.

Hi I'm 56 had a turp 0n the 30th Jan was out on 1 st feb the only real pain i felt was that rather large 9mm catheter which for some reason was homing out on an angle sideways which i had remidied so it was straighter a few pain killers and some numbing gel cured that problem I actually felt no other pain except for a headache I already had when I went in urine flow is great but the stinging burning isn't pleasent but  a week later it is only an irritation I did however notice yesterday and today that there is a hesitation before urination starts unless I push  harder hopefolly there is no scar tissue forming at the bladder opening have not had my follow up yet so hopefully alls well when i visit the sergeon

I was actually feeling well enough 5 days later to want sex but was told in no unserten terms by my partner "not for 4 to 6 weeks"

I dont know but presume this might cause bleeding

I havent had any bleeding and If I remember correctly my urine collection bag was clear by the morning after surgery I  did and still feel a bit lithargic suppose that is expected On word drink heaps of water to keep flushing yourself out

I dont know about the sex side of things but yes tuesday I got an errection so thats fine no dribbling I was worried about dry orgasms but although I wasn't allowed there was plenty of lubrication when I felt aroused so I am not as worried now

That's about it just thought I'd share my experience I was a bit aprehensive before I had this done

    Brent, New Zealand

I hope all goes well for everyone having or had this

And I hope Things are sellling down pty10 dont forget your pelvic floor muscle exercises

I have had massive problems for about two years. I finally went to the urologist and my prostrate had grown up into my bladder. It was causing major problems. The urologist thought the turp was the way to go simply because of the growth. At that point I was not sure it was cancer or what, most of the other prostrate was good, I am only 46 so it was odd. They removed the growth and stated that I could have retrograde ejaculation which I do. It has been about 5 weeks and I am still feeling pain when urinating, the bleeding stopped about the end of week three. The urine flow is definetely better, but I go through stages of more pain and less pain and sometimes I feel like I have to urinate more... this seems to happen as I am trying to get back to work and starting to lift more, the more I use my back muscles and the more active I am the more it seems to affect my bladder and the muscles around my prostrate. Overall it is improving and I went to the gym the first time today. I am not sure if there were alternatives. I am surprised that there is not more research being done to reverse the retrograde ejactulation, it seems like this could be reversed with some research and technology very easily, especially in men where things are functioning really well.

I read something about ephedrine causing regular ejactulation but not sure if that will work. The sensation is still there and as I have read it seems like it gets better over time. All things being equal my ejaculation still feels the same, it just does not come out...

I was very worried about retro as well. Turned out to be a total non-issue for me after my Turp last April. Sensations are exactly the same.

The sensations do seem to be exactly the same without the fluid coming out. I am surprised that more is not being done to correct it though it seems very possible for something to be done with technology.

Also I am on week 5 and still get sore after a workday or after sex. It seems like the more I use the muscles the more inflamed it gets. I am sure it is normal. I heard up to 8 weeks.

if I had it to do over again I probably would have looked into and tried one of the less invasive procedures first. However I think at some point a turp probably would have been inevitable.

I had the Greenlight in April 2012, a second greenlight in Dec 2013 due to hematuria and bladder stones, and a turp this past April. I'm hoping not to have more problems. But if I do I'm going for the simple prostatectomy. All of these procedures are mostly successful, but they also do a lot of damage to the protate that has to heal.

It's a PVP laser that vaporizes tissue rather than slicing it like the turp does. It's supposed to be less invasive than the turp, but it actually was harder to recuperate from than the turp was. Also, no tissue is left so there can be no testing of the tissue for cancer like can be done with the tissue removed from the turp. Having had both, Id say the turp was easier to recuperate from, and I was able to have the removed tissue analyzed by pathology, which came back good. But there was more bleeding with the turp, and I gained a lot of water weight (about 40 lbs. in 4 days) but i don't know if that was from the turp, the IV or the irrigation on the three way cath. I came home weighing 246 lbs. and a week later I was back down to 206. All of these procedures can be difficult. As far as I have read about them, they all have successes and failures, and  are difficult to recover from for many people.

Hmm, that might have been interesting to try. The Dr. I had was really good, but I sort of wish I would have researched it more prior. I might have been a candidate for the lift. My recommendation to anyone reading this would be to research... I am not sure what the less invasive options like the lift would have done for me... I do seem to be recovering fine from the turp and hopefully it will continue to improve. I would not say the retro is a non issue, but I figure it will be good, i mean it could be much worse, but again I would think someone would be working on a way to reverse that. It seems like it would be fairly simple to do. If they can do a robotic knee they can probably do this. I have not experienced the weight gain, but inactivity means less calories burned and less calories burned means weight gain.

I had my TERP three weeks ago today. Blood stopped about 5 days ago.  Crazy as this sounds, I took Aleve (like Advil) because I was having a ton of back pain (unrelated). The painful urination decreased by 50%. Now I'm doing two in the morning before work, and one in the evening before bed. Also which helped me big-time was the pelvic floor excercises. It really increases the ability to hold urine, and the pain I was having just sitting around is almost gone. I'd read that the Advils /Aleves were not good for you post surgery, so heed your docs advice. In my case, it burned so bad I figured, what the heck. For me, it worked. Not perfect, put that p*ssing on your tiptoes and wiping the tears from your eyes when done  seems to be under control with the Aleve (over the counter).

I had to wait a few weeks before taking ibuprofen or alieve as well. I think that has more to do with the bleeding than anything else. I try to take more tylenol now and still take them from time to time. I think after three weeks you can take motrin or alieve. My urination has certainly improved, but it is still sore. I agree with the spasms and sensations, the more you do the more it gets inflamed, so it is kind of skewed to really see how much this is going to help until it heals up. Mine gets better every week. I am on week 5 and it is much better than it was in week 4. The retrograde ejac has been a bit strange to get used to but the sensation is still there, it just goes in the other direction. I had hoped that this would not happen, but it did. Hopefully someday in the future they figure out how to remedy that.

i HAD MY SURGERY 3 WEEKS AGO. i WAS RELEASE BY NOON OF THE SAME DAY. mY SYMPTOMS WERE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. i REMOVE THE CATHERER THE FOLLOWING MORNING. Blleding has now slowed down. I saw my doctor yesterday and explained to him that I have to were a Depends because I dont feel and urge to relief myself, but I feel that I am wetting.  I was told to maintain a  3 days voiding log, and was giving a container with CC measurements. On the 3d day I have to bring my log in as well as my Depend (Call it diaper) on a clear plastic bag. I never felt any pain or spasms. I was given pain medication and tool softenber. I did not sue the pain medication, but used the tool siftener because I had problems going. I am bleeding less now. I hae to go in at the end of November to do a float test.
