Hello there I am 59 years old, I have been diagnosed with bph for several. Years now , psa ok around 2.5 checked every year, symptoms getting worse, peeing several times during the night , also severe retention if leave it too long when need to go .do not leak! (Yet) and would appreciate feedback from others who have had the procedure ( good and bad) The alfuziin 10 mg tablets seem to make little difference, and wondering whether to go ahead or carry on.

    There's a new prostate treatment called "focal laser ablation". I'm posting a link to a newly opened thread on it here because a lot of people trying to make a decision are reading/subscribed to this thread and may have mised the new thread on it here;

    Hello

I had  all your  symtoms and  it is   a very  scary  journey.  I  tried  all sorts  of things  to  try  to  reduce   the  size  of  my  prostate   -  special  dietset  -   but  nothing  worked. A  year  ago  I  paid  to  see a  specialist  and  up  until last August  I  had  about  5  trips  to  hospital  to  get  scans  etc.  At  start of  August  I  had  a  small video camera  inserted  up  though  my penis  and  after   I  had  this  done  I  went into retention   and  became  very ill   mainly  due  to  tablets  I  was given   to  try  and shrink  my  prostate.    Against  all my  hope  I  was told  on 20  Aug  that  would  need to  have  the  TURPS  operation.  As I  run  a  business I  decided  to  have  it done  as soon as  possible  in a private hospital.   I  cost  me  £500  for  4  consultations  with the specialist  and  for  me  this  was very  important.  Also  it  is  a  major  operation  as  the  cut  half  of  my  prostate  away   so  it  is  really important  that  you  are  really  physically  fot  with  no  health  issues  like  high  blood pressure. I  had  all the testing  done  on the NHS  but  paid  for  the  operation  as  I  just  did  not  have  faith  in the  NHS  doctors   to  do  a propper job.  They  are so pressed  for  time   -  a  slight  slip  and  you could  have serious  side effects.

Six  months  after the  operation  I  am  better.  My  urinating  is   really  good  with a  good  stream.  Also  my  sexual  function  has  really  improved. My  sperm  levels  are  probably  way  down  but  orgasms  are  great   which  is  an unexpected bonus.    By  the  way  I  am  62.

The TURP or PVP Green Light do not always fix the symptoms. However, when it does work, it makes life so much better. Talk to your doctor. Best of luck.

Graham Try to hold out as long as you can  you are only 59 and there are other procedure you can have.  Also make sure it is your prostate not your bladder because if it your bladder nothing will work  Ken

    Hi,

Sorry for reopening an old thread but you lot came up in google and I have a couple of questions to ask.

My paps has prostate cancer, quite severley but in the early stages. He has just undergone a TURP 6 weeks ago but is still suffering. He believes more was taken off abruptly than what should have and quite possibly the cathater was taken out incorrectly.. 6/7 weeks on he is discharging a very thick substance on occasions and he bled fairly regularly at the beginning of recovery.. I hope you have strong stomachs. I havent been able to relate these images to anything on google so far so hope to get an insight from anyone who has experienced similar.

    Many thanks,

    Son of..

That is coming out of him  It looks like some kind of tissue.  What the hell did they do to him..  Did you take it to the urologist. Was he talked into have the turp done.  There are other way of getting rid of cancer.  There would be no way that they would ever do that to me  I hope he get's better  Ken  Let us know if you find out what that is

graham30431. Sorry to tell you but your problem will not go away, it may get worse. I'm 66 years old and I had the same symptoms like you have. I used to go for holidays in other countries and the first thing I was checking where the nearest toilet was and if I had the right money for it to pay.

I did the operation 10 days ago because I couldn't live like that,  not a good life. As soon as the nurse wakes you up the pain is there. They keep the cathe on you for 2 to 3 days. After that they sent you home without it. I had severe retainsion (urithra blockage) at home the 5th day and I had to rush to ER to get fixed. I never had a baby because I'm male but I think the pain is the same. Don't really worry about that, It doesn't happen to everyone, I was unlucky.

They put another Cathe on me and after 7 days I have to go back to Hospital to get it out. Hopefully I will be OK. I'll let you know in about 5 days if you are inerested. At the moment I get pains every now and then and scared if this new cathe is going to block again or not. I'm Just trying to be honest with you and I hope I didn't scare you out of it. My advise is DO THE OPERATION. Of what I read, lots of people are happy they did it. I hope we have a better life by doing it.

Sorry about the spelling mistakes if any and grammer, but English is not my first language.

Graham. I had the TURP at the end of November. Carpeted out after 24 hours and went home. Blood in urine for weeks and pain in penis and abdomen when urinating. HOWEVER about end January all pain finally stared to go and am now pain free. Still get up once or twice a night but stream is good, urgency gone and empty bladder well. Urologist has discharged me from his care. Yes I have have retrograde ejaculation but so what. Sensation still there. So glad I had the op. From my experience so far I'd say go for it. The symptoms will not improve by themselves.

Your lucky you still have the sensation.  Not all men are that lucky  Ken

Not sure Im in the right forum for my question ..but hey dont know unless you try..

Im undergoing Hormone therophy at the moment had all the flow tests and was told not brilliant ...but i disagree ...I dont get up at night my flows during the day are good ( to me anyway ) i dont seem to feel a sense of urgency ...may take a short while to start peeing.....so i dont fill a bucket in 3.4 seconds ...question is do I really need the Turp proceedure before the radiotheraphy?? or at all.I  am greatfull for any guidence any one can give  ( before i speak to my Urolagyst..

Hey Buddy.  If your doing so well. Not listening to the test.  Like you say You don't have the urgency or get up at night. You feel your doing good.  That all theat matters.l I would leave well enough alone Because you don't want to have a doctor talk you into anything and they will try.  There are to many guys having surgery when they don't need them.  You could have more problems after.  Take care  Ken

      Hi Delboy,

You might want to start your own thread with a little more background on yourself and your condition. But in general, do not rush into Turp without looking at all the options. Unfortunately, your doctor may not give you those options and that's one of the reasons this forum exists.

Are you emptying your bladder? If not that could lead to problems. If you have doubts wit your doctor, you may want a second opinion. I've had Greenlight laser and Turp. Still not 100% but much better. Best of luck.

The test that matters is the sonogram that measures your PVR (post void residual). First they sonogram your full bladder, Then sonogram it again after you urinate. What is left in the bladder is yur PVR. Over 250 ml can be a problem. Less than that, I would leave it alone.

Thanks Jim ...have started my own thread Turp or no Turp eek

Not Sure what sonogram is but guess its the US version of the flow test.Cheers Bob biggrin

Not a flow test at all. Sonogram is also called an ultrasound. It takes pictures of your organs. When you get a sonogram of your bladder, the urine shows up as dark a dark mass so thery csn messure the volume of the urine. Then after you pass urine, they take another picture. The urine that is left is the PVR (post void residual).

Yep that's right here it's flow test followed by an ultrasound of contents of the bladder......both test I had around 200ml left but about ten minutes later reckon I emptied that out in the toilet before leaving the hospital 😊
