TVT Operations....How many of you have found this successful?

Posted , 62 users are following.

I had a TVT op five years ago, and had no idea of the problems some women had with this, until I read about them on here.

Could the women who have had this operation successfully please stop by and tell us how you are, and how long ago you had your TVT.

Thanks in advance.

I had TVT 8 years ago. So far no problems with soreness etc.

Can jump around ok! Only think does make urge incontinence a bit of a problem sometimes. Have tried meds not suit, but manage ok.

     Good luck

So nice to hear from someone who has had a fairly positive experience, It's usually only when there are problems that we get to hear, when things go well we tend to just get on with our new improved life. But lots of us are looking for some hope, me included, as its very early days for me, so I'm really grateful that you have shared your experience! Thank you smile

I think I must have been one of the first to have this operation in this country. I was told it was a new procedure and had it done in 1998. The tape did yhe trick although the op itself was horrendous. The local anesthetic failed and the bladder was pierced. I spent a week in hospital until they were satisfied it had healed. The only problem I have experienced is urgency when the bladder is full.

No other problems at all and not affected by hypothyroidism which I was diagnosed with a few years before the op.

Hi, I had a TVT sept 1st and to my doctors surprise it was not successful. He seems perplexed since he says it has a 95 % success rate. A month and a half ago he tried me on medication to help with the incontinence. I was actually wondering why that wasn't suggested or tried BEFORE the surgery. In any case it did not work. Just saw him last week and I'm scheduled for a cystoscopy. He wants to see what's going on in there and maybe it needs to be tightened. I don't know how I feel. I don't like the idea of having this mesh inside me when it's not working and I don't like the idea of having a second surgery to try and tighten it( if that's what he suggests). I heard from my physiotherapist that there is a therapist in her clinic that specializes in incontinence and has had a lot of success with people. That's an idea. I'll keep you all posted. lol

      Hi Monica

Im sorry your surgery not a success.  Im in same boat. Im on my 3rd PT therapist with no improvement and tried the meds.  My Dr now wants to try urethral bulking. Ive decided against that for the time being. Had second opinion that recommended same thing. She suggested trying poise impressa i tried all 3 sizes it made it worse while i had it in.  On third round of PT but think im about done spending time and money on no results. Finally started working out again after 2 years of waiting for improvement to no avail. Now having groin pain.  So fed up with doctors that just tell you what you want to hear. definately feel i have nerve damage from surgery.  I hope PT works for you.  Please keep us posted.  Take care and good luck

Any ladies (or men) from Northern Ireland considering TVT or hernia mesh surgery or suffering complications post procedure. If you are on Facebook there is a N Irish group where there is plenty of advice from people who are going through this and are looking for answers. Look for the N Irish TVT(O), TOT, Prolapse & Hernia mesh victims group. Happy new year to you all xx

Two reports were released in 2015 which say polypropylene mesh (material used in TVT, TVTO, hernia etc) degrades in the body and more work needs to be done to assess complications. When queried about these reports you (the MHRA) said : "The MHRA are aware of this recently published article of a study in Canada. This will contribute to our on-going work in monitoring the safety and performance of these medical devices. We note that this study concludes that both physical and chemical aspects of polypropylene degradation need to be studied more extensively for their roles in the development of complications, which we fully agree with."

Ther has been no update on this. You would think it would be a priority given there are 1000s of women and men in the UK with mesh products in their bodies that could be doing god knows what harm?

Hi i had my opp 20th dec 2016 i have had no problems emptying my bladder from day one in the first 2 week i found i needed the loo more often and had to go straight away or i did leak a small amount this as now settled and im able to go normaly. Ihad key hole surgery just under the bikini line this i found sore but eased after about 1 week and was ok once the stitches came out, i did only intend having 2 weeks off work as this was the advice i was given from my dr but am still off and into my 4th week i have had sciatica because of all the sitting this is a reaccuring problem i have had before, i have had the heavy dragging sensation other people have experienced in my groin and down the back of my legs which became unberable when i had done any thing physical like walking to shops or just doing little jobs around the house, i joined this site to see other peoples views on the opp some storys made me worry case the pain was an indication it hadnt worked but as i read on found people with exactly the same experiences as myself i held on to this and realised as im 51 your body may take longer to heal im now preparing to go back to work next week and agree with others the recovery time is underestimated

      Hi Dianne,

i am 51 yrs old too had the surgery in Sept of 2016. My recovery was fine, no pain. However as I had written previously the tvt  surgery did NOT work. I am leaking just as much as before. I could tell after the first few days. Next week my doctor is doing another test where he will be looking into my bladder to see what is going on. He said I may need to REDO the surgery! My Physio suggested I try working with a Physio who specializes in incontinence, I didn't even know that was an option. I wonder if anyone has tried that. I hope your pain subsides. Will keep everyone posted. Are you completely dry now??

Hi monica i did physio 10 yrs ago which i felt did not benefit me but had to try before nhs would consider me for tvt in the end due to a change of job and circumstances i didnt go ahead with the opp.Ive done physio again a few years ago but found it a waste of time after putting tvt off for another couple of years this time i went through my private health scheme and refused the physio which he was fine with as my records show i had already tried it twice i still had the eurodynamics test again and was then offered tvt i think my pain is more through my sciatica and this is my dr thoughts aswell as the pain is not in my stomach or bladder region and im not leaking at all now . in the second week i.had test for water infection and swabs took both because off the heavy dragging sensation which i now no was just part of the healing prosses they both came back ok, having the tests settled my mind after reading about all the posts of what could go wrong

I am so happy it worked for you. Unfortunately there is the risk of it not working. I had put it off for years. I probably will try again since I don't feel I have other options. But I am prepared that it still may not work.

Sorry yours did not work, when i went back to my own GP he mentioned about the differences with someone who has had a general anesthestic and a local anesthestic when having a tvt, apparently someone who stays awake the surgeon can have them cough and baredown to determine how effective the tape is and can ajust accordingly maybe you could mention this to you GP and see what his views on this are hope you get sorted soon

Good idea. I will on Tuesday when I see him( the urologist)  for my test. I did have it done locally.

I was given the option of a general anesthetic as I had to cough in order for them to get the tension exactly right. Mine has worked since 1998. Only downside was horrific experience during op as local anesthetic didn't work. They carried on giving me morphine and gas. I was in hospital for a week as my bladder was pierced.

That should have read 'wasn't ' given the option of a general'
