Uk private treatment

Has anyone in the UK gone down the private route for a replacement or a revision?

Also which Uk consultants would anyone recommend for complex procedures in UK private or nhs.

    Hello vicki.

i was booked to have hip replacement at NHS hospital but the wait was about 5 months and after meeting with surgeon, I decided I did not want to go that route mainly because of his attitude and the method that was used . It would have meant a large scar and muscles tendons etc, being cut.

im in Kent and went privately. Where are you?

Hi vicki.  I went privately with Callum McBryde at the Little Aston Spire hospital.  He specialises in the anterior approach.  He also operates at the Birmingham Parkway.  If you google his name you can find information about his practice.  I'm nearly 7 weeks since my surgery and seem to be doing well.  I have my post operation check up on Saturday to hopefully confirm all okay.  X

That's good to hear, I've read that he specialises in younger patients, my daughter is only 18 so might look into trying to see him.

      Many thanks

Hi.  Yes he does and he treats nearly all of his patients with the anterior approach so he has lots of experience of this.  At 49 I still consider myself pretty young but I suspect I'm one of his older patients.  Good luck with your search for the right consultan for your daughter.

I had THR posterior privately and had insurance that covered a good proportion although obviously that varies with the policy.. I had Mr Middleton who works in Poole and Bournemouth and is very experienced. I stayed in Harbour Hospital Poole for 4 nights. The nursng was excellent and I felt assured of a high standard of cleanliness. There is also the advantage of being able to book a date and be 99% sure it will be adhered to barring accidents to the surgeon. and also at quite short notice. I am a year on now and very satisfied with the result  It can sometimes get sore if I do a long walk and  gets stiff when sitting.or it may feel I am sitting on a stone. I still use a wedge in the car. If you are going the insurance route you need to check exactly what is covers, MIne had an excess and also did not cover  check ups with x rays at 6 and 12 months, cost of take home medication, take home crutches.. it did include 3 phtio sessions after discharge (in addition to physio after op. Do cime back if any more questions.

I expect you will get recommendations Vicki. I spent ages googling consultants that dud minimal invasive surgery, as the Anterior method is not widely used in uk.

my surgeon, treatment and care was excellent although I had to travel 40 miles!

what questions do you have and maybe we can answer ?

Mary. Not sure if you meant this question for me, but if you did, I had my op in Benenden hospital , cranbrook. Everything there was brilliant. X

    Hi Vicki

I had a complex right hip reconstruction on January 30.  My surgeon was Mr. Trevor Lawrence. I had mine done at Spire Parkway Hospital in Solihull. He is Amazing and I have been very happy with my hip. Im six months on now, still walking long distance with a walking stick but absolutely no pain (sometimes achey muscles which is normal!) and no stick around the house. I would thoroughly recommend him.

I had my hip replaced on the NHS. At the time waiting lists were not too long and using the choose & book system you could choose your surgeon & hospital. When it became infected 8 years later friends said I should go provately because of the waiting list but a revision is more complicated and expensive with less certaintly about how long you will be in hospital. So I had a two stage revision on the NHS at Nuffield Orthopaedic in Oxford. I was 11 days in the hospital for the first stage and 5 for stage 2. I never got a private quote but imagine it would have been v expensive. However I was impressed by my surgeon so my wife is having her hip done by him in the Manor Oxford - Adrian Taylor.

But as others said it depends where you are.

    Mike
