Unblocking ear/eustachian tube

I have had this problem over and over for years - always the right ear is worse or the only one. Have given up most dairy, have a good diet.

Have taken lots of different antibiotics etc and nose sprays and none of it helps. Now the antibiotics I take also give me a bad stomach and headaches etc Feel worse than ever. Have tried the various breathing techniques , yawning etc none of it works. Got an ear popper which relieves it a bit but then it is bac\k to square one.

Hi newcomer here.  Great to hear from other folk with ear problems!  My problem starts with a cold or virus when the eustachian tubes become blocked and the pressure is unbearable at times. Much rather have a headache or pain somewhere when I could take pain relievers.  However I find holding a covered hot water bottle against my ears helps, also a steam inhaler with few drops of Olbas Oil helps.  Antibiotics best to stay off if you can.  I have also used a nasal spray called Sterimar which is a sea salt spray.

Sorry Ann, just after seeing your question. This last bout took longer as I had  two concurring bouts of some kind of cold virus. One in December and one in March. Really just couple of weeks ago they are feeling much better. I can't travel when they're "off" as it makes them worse.

Well you ladies are scaring me! I recently have been dealing with fluid in my euschian tube for the firs time ever, it came on about 6 weeks ago. After 10 days of no change I first went to my family dr. and she put me on Sudafed, Afrin, and Flonase. After one week it did nothing so I went to an ENT. The ENT tested my hearing, which i told them I couldn't hear out of my right ear guess they didn't believe me. They said "yes according to our hearing test you have fluid in the right eustachian tube, you've lost some hearing in your right ear but not enough that we would treat it with a hearing aid" DUH! I knew I had fluid in my inner ear, I told them what was wrong I didn't need a diognoses, I wanted it cured!! And I don't need a hearing aid, just remove the fluid in my inner ear! So she put me on water pills! Water pills? Why? After one month that also has done NOTHING! I am crazy with this issue. My ear sounds like the sound you hear when you're pregnant and get an ultrasound. Now I'm going on two months with no change. The ENT said come back Aug 12th and they'll do another hearing test to see if it's better. I don't need a hearing test to to them there's no change! I don't understand why this can't be cured.

I've had fluid in my right ear ever since a terrible sinus infection that I had a year ago. I've mentioned it to my doctor, urgent care doctors and an ENT. No one does anything. I'm about at my wit's end. I just finished another sinus infection that may have been caused by this fluid. I wish I knew what to do!!

      Hi ilene

Have you tried putting a musical tuning fork on the centre of your forehead.

It worked for me.  Within seconds I was swallowing yucky stuff.  This continued for hours but be careful of the dizziness as your ear drains.

28 hours later and my deaf ear is better than my good 1.

      Hi Leila,

You mentioned the tuning fork. Are you still better now? I ordered one today. What note was your tuning fork please? I ordered the c above middle c. I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Would love to know if it helped your Eustachian tubes.

Hi. I have had this problem also most of my life (I am retired now). Really difficult to get help with this. I know a small operation where they fit little grommets in the ear drum to release the fluid, helps. I also put salted water up nostrils which also helps. My doctor also gave me a product called Sterimar (basically sea water spray).

I also have this problem. I got it aboutt 4yrs ago after a really bad cold/flu when they blocked. I have been to ENT  specialist and had examinations and hearing tests. They are not keen to do anything. I have done the Salt Water Nasal wash for ages and nothing. Also prescribed antihistimine and nasal spray. Done all the other stuff. Nose blowing, jaw wiggling, massaging in front and behind of ear. Nothing. I've even spent money on hopi ear candle treatment. It is driving me nuts too. Sometimes they pop but it lasts nano seconds.

Hi Elaine. I sympathise with you as I have same prob. Usually starts with cold or flu virus. This last bout has taken longer to clear. After many months it feels lot better so yours should as well if you can avoid colds etc. I had to keep pinching nostrils and blow. Really hope yours clears up soon

Hi alice - thank you for your comment. How long have you been suffering in total? I have had this for almost 4 yrs. sad

Hi Elaine, sad to say but I have had it (during and after colds and viruses) most of my life.  I am now retired.  Still find it horrific every time I have this problem and find it hard to cope.  Hard on the nervous system I think.  Still, the good news is.............it usually does clear up after some time (quite a long time sometimes!).  I always think if you can get out and get a lot of sunshine it helps as well. Bit difficult in U.K.
