Uncommon costo symptoms

Posted , 57 users are following.

Costochondritis is unfortunately, not widely known or discussed and I've got more information from here than my gp.

Although I'm lucky to say I'm 80-90% healed, I've reached a plateau.

I wanted to share some of the less common symptoms I've experienced in my healing process for those who may be scared/confused:

Dizziness

Head pressure on the side of inflammation

(possibly led to a slowing down of the movement in left eye, I now wear glasses to refocus, never had eye issues before)

Headaches

Swollen neck

Tightness in neck

Swollen shoulder muscles

Back pain in the middle of back

Inability to eat

Feeling physically full after half a meal but still hungry

Stomach pain

Burning sensation in muscles

Tingling sensation in muscles

Strange sinking feeling when breathing, comparable to the stomach drop you get in fear/on a rollercoaster or similar but it's more muscular/physical

Sensation of muscles suddenly "deflating" when falling asleep - possibly anxiety related as well

Constant palpitations

Fatigue

Tiredness

Generally weak

Arm pain on side of inflammation

Feeling like I can't breathe

Difficulty walking at speed - who knew swaying arms could be so painful?!

Feeling fine all day but swelling up when you lie down to sleep

Sinus pressure

BONUS: For those who have overcome the majority of the pain

general discomfort/awareness/heaviness/tightness of the affected areas

Feel free to share your uncommon/less discussed symptoms

You said you are mostly healed. How did you do it?

Mostly turmeric teas. Just buy some turmeric/haldi powder and pop a teaspoon or two in hot water. You can add ginger and pepper to amp up the anti inflammatory healing, and honey or milk to better the taste.

      I also did some stretching.

Hi All, I'm new here.  I was diagnosed in early 2016 in the ER.  I thought it was heart related or a panic attack.  It was costochondritis.  Never heard of it.  I had a lot of pain and trouble breathing. I was dizzy a lot because of my shallow breathing.  I stopped all lifting (over about 2-3 pounds), had to go on bed rest (it was the only way I was able to breathe) and finally after about 18 months or so, I was feeling better.  So I've had 6 good months and now it is back.  Same symptoms as before but milder.  I hope it's just a mild flare-up and will recover quickly.  Anyway it is a miserable condition and I wish you all the best in your endeavors to be healed.

I’m a sufferer too. How did you manage to arrive to the point that you are almost healed? What did you take or do? Thanks in advance

      Turmeric teas and stretches.

Put a teaspoon or two or turmeric in hot water. Add ginger or pepper to amp up healing qualities.

Thank you SO SO much for sharing this info. I’m gathering more info here than anywhere else.

Mine tend to be more towards the lower part of my ribs, not my chest.

Of course my ongoing fears are related to organs in my abdomen more than anything else.

Although I do get chest cramps and upper back burning discomfort.

Most of my symptoms concentrate on the left side of my body

Lower rib cage sharp poking sensation

Upper and lower left back burning sensation

Sudden sharp feelings around my left flank, chest

    Numbness of my left hand

Anyone else feels their costo symptoms towards the abdomen?

My GP and GI drs diagnosed me with costo and ruled out anything serious.

My GI is the Department head of the GI unit at our hospital. I want to trust him but my anxiety kicks in and worry that i have something terrible.

Within a month I lost two dear friends to pancreatic cancer & brain cancer

My health Anxiety is getting the best of me.

I had pancreatitis when I was an infant (unusual I know...) so when I started noticing the left-side lower rib pain I thought it was my pancreas, but blood tests and a scan have come back saying it looks normal.

I have had costo for about 7 years. I have learned to live with it and sort of know my triggers.

I mainly get the burning sensation in my shoulder girdle area (upper back left side). This is triggered by stress or by bad posture, such as when sitting at a desk, or on a kitchen bar stool.

When this flares up then the pins and needles in my left hand is more pronounced. A chiropractor has done some prodding in my ribs at the back and has triggered the pins and needles, so we know this is related.

I am quite sure this all began as an injury to my ribs when I was very unwell with flu and a cough back in 2011. I coughed so much that I cracked a rib on my left side. I think a nerve is pinched and so when I hold myself tense or sit awkwardly it triggers the burning and also the pins and needles.

The pain in the front of my ribs is more triggered by food. If I overdose on carbs or fatty food - bread and say sausage rolls, then I get the pointy pain in the front.

Pilates and the chiropractor have helped me to get to know my body better. Trying to get myself into a better posture and alignment. Cutting back on those heavy carbs and fatty foods was my choice (helping my mum eat healthier) and this is when I noticed the link to the pain in the front of my ribs.

      I hope this story helps.

Wow Tracy, thank you so much for replying. You mentioned every single symptom that I have. Your story seems very similar to mine in terms of triggers, foods, posture, stress, etc.

I should go see a chiropractor to see if they can help me. I started taking Meloxicam 7.5 two days ago once a day to see if this can help with the swelling. I do not plan on taking medication long term, I'd rather use natural remedies to heal this condition and to change my diet to a more balanced one.

I started drinking green smoothies made at home with fresh organic kale, spinach, broccoli, almond milk and frozen dark berries, a garlic wedge and mushroom powder to increase my immune system

I also started taking curcumeric tabs, one a day along with vitamin C.

I really hope that this discomfort goes away, like you, I had the flu and on my last pregnancy I vomited daily for almost three months that I am pretty sure I did some damage to my ribs.

How are you feeling now? are your symptoms under control?

and what type of tests did you get done to rule out GI issues?

My GI dr does not want to order labs or other tests because he does not think my issues are GI related.

I had a physical done in April 2018 with all kinds of labs and everything was normal so he doesn't think we should re order labs.

I take the high dose curcumeric too as well as evening primrose oil, because sometimes I feel pain in my left breast as well. I also take glucosamine for general joint health.

I was initially prescribed naproxen for the pain but one dose gave me horrendous indigestion so I didn't continue. I know they were short term to help with the inflammation, but I clearly have a sensitivity to those sorts of ant-inflammatories. I do sometimes rub an anti-inflammatory gel on my shoulder area as sometimes it can flare up in the night time!

I have had to miss a few weeks of pilates due to summer holidays and children at home from school and so I notice the difference. Regular pilates definitely helps me. The chiropractor helps me too although I am not sure he 100% understands my main reasons for going to see him he does a good job of re-aligning me. I go regularly now - every 5 weeks or so.

In terms of tests, I have had blood tests to look for protein, related to pancreatic function. I have had a stool test to check my bowels. I have had x-rays looking at my ribs and upper spine and also a couple of ultra sounds looking at that front rib area to see if the pancreas looks normal. The frustrating thing with some of those tests is that the results say 'no change'. And I am thinking 'no change since when?' I would really like to see whether I have two ribs squished together a bit more than normal, or evidence that one of them has been damaged.

I have an orthopaedic appointment next week about the tingling in my hand. It is there pretty much all of the time and is worse when my shoulder area has a flare up (or burn up!) I saw someone 6 months ago and I felt like a fraud because it is only minor tingling - I can still feel with it and move it normally. But next week I am going to ask about the link to the ribs. There was mention of an MRI scan - that might be interesting.

I think I am satisfied that there is nothing life-threatening going on, so my health anxieties are low.

I too have the occasionally 'nutribullet' smoothie, but they tend to have too much of a detox effect to drink regularly! I know what foods I should steer away from but toast with butter is my comfort food so sometimes I just need it!

I don't know what Meloxicam is, but probably an anti-inflammatory? As long as they agree with you I can see no harm in the short term to get the inflammation down. Ice or heat can also help when you have a flare up.

I hope you can soon get to the point where you no longer worry that there is something sinister lurking and find your way of keep the costo at bay.

      Take care x

Yeah i feel it in my abdomen. In fact when i got diagnosed the doc asked mt what i thought it might be and i said hernia because my lower ribs were hurting more than my sternum was at that point.

Also, when id take walks i found i couldn't swing my arms or id get pains all down my left side right down to the top of my hip.

It's interesting to find how each joint connects to and affects another.

Its all bcoz of costochondritis?? I think its bcoz of some nerve related maybe vagus nerve, bcoc i also have this prob im feel discomfort from left side, tight and stuck feeling in left throat, i i dont know very much about that, plz someone tell me wat is this?? Is this bciz of costochondritis or bcoz of nerve who related our throat chest nd stomach?

I'm no physician but when I think of how joints are connected... I believe it can be caused by costo.

Like your sternum connects to your shoulder which connects to your neck, bottom of the skull then up to the upper head (such a scientific description, lol)

Also, when I used to take walks when my costo was at its worst, i noticed i had pains in my lower ribs. Thats when i realised how connected each joint was. And i don't think its located JUST in one spot. I think the pain spreads. On my bad days i wouldn't even be able to eat and swallowing was difficult yet the problem was supposedly in my chest.

I also googled other chronic pains like fybro and arthritis, similar symptoms.
