Uncommon costo symptoms

Costochondritis is unfortunately, not widely known or discussed and I've got more information from here than my gp.

Although I'm lucky to say I'm 80-90% healed, I've reached a plateau.

I wanted to share some of the less common symptoms I've experienced in my healing process for those who may be scared/confused:

Dizziness

Head pressure on the side of inflammation

(possibly led to a slowing down of the movement in left eye, I now wear glasses to refocus, never had eye issues before)

Headaches

Swollen neck

Tightness in neck

Swollen shoulder muscles

Back pain in the middle of back

Inability to eat

Feeling physically full after half a meal but still hungry

Stomach pain

Burning sensation in muscles

Tingling sensation in muscles

Strange sinking feeling when breathing, comparable to the stomach drop you get in fear/on a rollercoaster or similar but it's more muscular/physical

Sensation of muscles suddenly "deflating" when falling asleep - possibly anxiety related as well

Constant palpitations

Fatigue

Tiredness

Generally weak

Arm pain on side of inflammation

Feeling like I can't breathe

Difficulty walking at speed - who knew swaying arms could be so painful?!

Feeling fine all day but swelling up when you lie down to sleep

Sinus pressure

BONUS: For those who have overcome the majority of the pain

general discomfort/awareness/heaviness/tightness of the affected areas

Feel free to share your uncommon/less discussed symptoms

how long has it taken you to become 80-90% better?

I was diagnosed in May, took ibuprofen and did stretches until September and saw very very little change. Started drinking turmeric tea in September and about 2 months later there was a BIG improvement. No more daily pain, all I had were a few strange fluttery feelings buy i wasn't in extreme pain anymore. I was actually amazed at the difference and how quickly it happened.

It's been a while and I've been stuck on 80-90% healed for 2 years which is better than nothing I guess.

I was diagnosed with costo last year and it goes away and comes back every couple of months or so. It all started with me with pain in my breast which made me go have a mammogram and ultrasound. When both of those came back clear I didn't know what was going on. It just so happened I had some blood work done and my labs for lupus came back positive so I was sent to a rheumatologist who diagnosed me with costo. He pressed on my sternum and it was sore like a really deep bruise. I take ibuprofen when it really flares up and that helps tremendously. My symptoms are:

•tingling skin over my sternum and into my breast.

•soreness and tenderness from sternum all the way up to my collarbone.

•pain in my arm pit and all the way down to the arm.

•sometimes have itchiness around breast and sternum.

•after working in the yard or doing anything that exerts a lot of energy, it feels like something is sitting on my chest and I can't get a good, deep breath.

I have a 4 year old and an almost 2 year old who love to climb all

SORRY, I posted that before I was done. I was saying that both of my girls climb all over me and I just about come unglued when they push on my chest/sternum area. Also, I forgot to mention that I have pain in several ribs all the way around to my back.

I have the same symptoms for about 2 months. It started after I had the flu. when the flu cleared up I was left with this pain in my chest. my doc ran blood work did an ekg and an xray all normal. finally told me it might be costo. I'm so glad I found sites like this. It makes me feel so much better to know I'm not alone. I have a 10 year old boy who wants to wrestle all the time. can't help but feel like I'm letting him down, but I just can't do that anymore. I need to rest after a few chores these days. I feel so bad for you having 2 little ones to run after. I haven't had it as long as you but I am finding some relief. I stopped wearing a bra 4 days ago and the pain in the arm pits is gone my chest still hurts but warm baths help enough to sleep. Do you think it will ever go away completely?

    Hello!

I'm not sure if anyone is still on here but I'm desperately trying to find just one person who has had similar symptoms to me!

At the end of 2017 I noticed my lower left ribs were swollen/sticking out. They didn't really hurt so i thought that's odd, I'll monitor it.

Six months later, in the summer of 2018, i went to the doctor. He had a feel and said he thought it was my ribs protruding and sent me for tests to work out why.

I had an x-ray, an ultrasound of my spleen and pancreas, both of which came back fine, so I was sent for a nuclear bone scan which showed inflammation around the lower left ribs... a diagnosis of costochondritis was made.

What worries me is my rubs have now been sticking out/swelling for a year. Its gradually getting more uncomfortable. I wouldn't say painful, but it feels tight and uncomfortable. If I press on one of my lower ribs, around where the costo joint would be it can be sore. There is absolutely no pain around my sternum though, it's more in the middle of the ribs and round the outside.

It's the swelling that concerns me more. Its quite widespread. I'm not very good at numbering my ribs but I'd guess its my numbers 7-10 ribs and the swelling is all the way to the outside. I've never read of anyone having this swelling and lack of any real pain.

i don't know whether to ask for ANOTHER opinion! I've already spoken to two doctors. I was also referred for a ct scan for a different issue, of my lower chest, abdomen and pelvis and that didn't show anything of any concern so I feel I've had every test going! i just wish there were people saying they had this swelling! its not a lump, its just like my ribs are sticking out and its definitely worse at the end of the day.

    Anyone?

My doctor said I had Costo/Tietzes in November. Im not really having the central chest pain at all anymore but i seem to have a constant niggly ache under my breast/all round my ribs towards my back - sometimes it feels like its even lower than my ribs or even in my kidney area. And then sometimes it feels like I've got a stitch right under my ribs, despite having not moved an inch. I've been to the GP for the 3rd time today as it's still ongoing and after trialling me on lansoprazole thinking its reflux related he's now thinking it's anxiety related. He's not done any blood work or anything to rule anything else out, probably because I haven't said I feel unwell, but as I was reluctant to go straight for the diazepam he's instead referred me to physio?! I have no idea anymore if this is costo related, or even if they think I ever had that in the first place. Does any of these symptoms ring any bells with anyone else on here?

      ME!

Mine is a general ache with an occasional pinching/stitch type feeling. My ache can spread all along my lower left ribs and round to my back. And they are very swollen / sticking out. No one ever seems to have the swollen sticking out symptom though so I'm always worrying it's something else, despite having every test going!

I now take cbd oil at night which seems to calm me down a bit x

Yes, i get the same niggly ache and tightness in those areas. In fact, when i got diagnosed i thought it was a hernia because all the pain was at my lower ribs, under the boob...

Mine is gone now but when i first had costco i basically had a mini "hill" in the middle of my chest and my rib area would be swollen. Once in a while it still swells but nothing like it used to. Mostly just a noticeable hardness and slight swelling now.

Oh that's reassuring to know. Thank you for sharing that! It's the swelling that always worries me. I've had mine for over a year now 😦

I know, its never comforting to see random lumps and bumps where they shouldn't be!

Try drinking turmeric mixed with hot water and do some stretches. It helped me so much.
