    Hi Lee

In an ideal world I think all sufferers would "go commando" as I am sure the material and dyes aggrevate the problem.  Buy a specific barrier cream I use one called Sass that I get from high street chemists.  Also you need to use panty liners - horrid I know

Is this a silly idea or a good one. considering trying underwear for incontinence, must be pretty comfortable i would think..good or bad idea??

amazon has it. Drugstores can probably irder it. My advice is to google anything and everything anyone mentions on this site. Doctors like to keep things simple & only spend so much time with you. We have to educate ourselves. This site is a good beginning, but we have to do our due diligence after that.

Reading all these posts for over a year I've come to the conclusion that the common medical solution to atrophy is hormones in cream form (or pills if it's an extreme case that does not respond to the cream). If you have UTI's than they can treat the infection, but ultimately hormones are needed to build up the thinning skin. Basically that's the reality we have to deal with.

I am in the "no hormones if possible" camp, but I don't suffer from UTI's ; just occassional itchiness. Of course, if I were attempting to have sex it would be a different story entirely as I can barely tolerate an exam.

I have posted this before but will again for new readers: I had suffered for 5 years during menopause onset with really extreme soreness and discharge. Although I had had a couple of bouts with this over the years (results of new partners) & was treated successfully with Flagyl, the gyno I was seeing at menopause insisted Flagyl was not indicated and she prescribed everything else imaginable including hormone cream (which made it worse) then sent me to specialists who wanted to send me to pharmacists who make up specialized creams that weren't covered by insurance. I couldn't dream of wearing slacks of any kind and was in misery 24/7. I finally appealed to my GP for the Flagyl (he was mystified that the gyno would not prescribe it). He  prescribed the Flagyl and I was cured. So on the outside chance that one of you may in fact have a bacterial infection that can't be specifically identified that doesn't mean you don't have one. Talk with your doc about the possibility. My GP said the body is full of bacteria good & bad that haven't yet been identified. Obviously mine was a perfect example.

Re the atrophy, the Mona Lisa treatment sounds to me to be the only non-hormonal choice. It appears to be available in the UK & US, but is new pricey. However, if I were suffering the way some of you are I would go for it as I have a sister with stage 4 estrogen dependent breast cancer and would rather avoid using hormones constantly if I can.

So best of luck to everyone and keep us all informed of your progress and cures.

I saw a post from Mary who was using a product for prolapse that has also been advertised to help with incontinence but she said she was using knickers UNDER it as well as over it, so not sure if that would be a good idea or not.  Unless she was wearing two pairs of knickers to help support the prolapse because the item didn't do it enough without those.   I do think the biggest thing is moisturisation though.  I got some hydromol that arrived yesterday and am trying it out so the jury is still out on that, but so far I think it's been organic coconut oil that has worked best for me BUT I thnk I used too much because I did find it messy and even wearing black  cotton (I think cotton is best) knickers, it went through those and left a dark mark on jeans as well.  Maybe using less might be the answer though.

Have you tryed vit e from the capaule yet..im thinking of trying that next im also going to take a capsule orally

I tried it without the capsule but it was difficult to get it anywhere on fingers, and then one day tried the whole capsule and then panicked that it was going to leave cellulose up there!  I WAS taking an immune product that had Vitamin E in it and a load of other things but then got nervous about overdosing with Vitamin E, probably unnecessarily, but I know Vitamin E is one of those that you need to be a bit careful with, so I stopped taking it.  That was one of the reasons I was initially worried about using it in the vagina as well, because I didn't know how much Vitamin E would be absorbed.  But I may well be being over cautious about that aspect.  Having said that, I do take krill oil.  Just thinking back to the coconut and talking of orally, I did put a spoonful of organic coconut oil in coffee for a while and that actually did have all sorts of benefits that I hadn't expect and my hair got incredibly shiny BUT then I read perhaps it wasn't so good to have so much saturated fat and coupled with the fact I seemed to be gaining weight, I stopped that too.  I have fumbled my way through lots of different things:-)

I was thinking a little for just the vulva might be good.

One thing that does help with irritation at times is a warm sitz bath.Soak for about 15 min.you can buy a basin to fit on the toilet and just sit on it.

If you can get organic coconut oil there, I'd try that first, partly because it's normally easy to get hold of, and it's not expensive, and will save you sending abroad to get the hydramol.  It's only a suggestion though, and I will let you know how the hydramol works.  Interesting about the bath and what a good idea!

Doctor sudgested the sitz bath.usually very soothing.I have a jar of the organic coconut in my cupboard.i am so leary of trying anything.I also have Replense i havnt tryed.I am even scared of using an applicator in the vagina..fear of pain i think.if a person used it on the vulva i think it has to be liquified first..got me

I've never used Replens but know someone who does, but have also heard people say it leaves a white residue of skin cells, and that it has an estrogenic action with one of the ingredients, but lots of women to use it, and I'd think it's a lot safer than something like vagifem.  What I did with the coconut oil was put some chunks of it in a saucer and then just sort of grab a small piece which melts as soon as you put it on the warm skin around the vulva.  It really did work very well for me.  Having said that, on Tuesday I had a pessary fitted and it's one of the more difficult types but I've got weird anatomy (partly due to the connective tissue disease) and this one has a sort of 'coat hanger' arrangement on the bottom which was rubbing slightly yesterday but this morning I started using the hydromol and the difference it's made is amazing!  So really, I think you can't go far wrong with either.  I think the coconut oil would have worked just as well although the hydromol is probably a tad easier to use because of the consistency - it smears easier.  But if you've got the organic coconut there, please just try it for a couple of days.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised:-))))))

Hate to bug you again, but did you apply the coconut oil at bedtime..i really dont feel a pad would feel good right now.Thank you about explaining how to apply it.youve ben so kind.I appreciate it.

You're not bugging me at all Lee!  I used the coconut as soon as I'd showered and several times during the day initially and then went down to a couple of times a day.  But as I said, don't do what I did unless you're at home and it doesn't matter - I lathered it on so much that it went through knickers to leave a darkish patch on jeans (did wash out fine though).  So yes, bedtime is a good time to start:-))))
