Unexplained Chronic Nausea

Hi all

I am writing in the hope that someone can relate to what I am going though and maybe offer some support or advice.

Seven weeks ago I woke up feeling extremely nauseous. I also had bad muscle pains, joint pains, a headache every day (now gone), and felt extremely fatigued; so fatigued that some days I find it hard to walk around as my legs feel like paper on bad days. I have been like this every single day for weeks. I have actually had similar symptoms on other occasions in the past. On those occasions, it has usually lasted about six weeks and then disappeared. This time it is showing no signs of abating. I lay on my bed most days feeling too sick to move around.

Because this has happened before, my GP thinks it might be M.E and I am waiting to go to a clinic to see someone about it. Meanwhile, each day is like torture to me.

I wake up very nauseous as soon as I open my eyes. I can not bear to eat until around midday but usually feel slightly better for eating something....if it does not give me bad wind and I end up burping for hours. I am just eating tiny amounts often. I have acid reflux but my throat isn't sore with acid. I also have a hiatus hernia though it's very small. I am on PPIs for this.

I can not take anti sickness meds as I react badly to them. No doctor will give me them so I have to brave this without any help. I cut out caffiene, I don't drink alcohol, and I eat a healthy diet...I have to because I have chronic kidney disease, my cholesterol has suddenly gone up, and I am high end of normal for blood sugar. In fact, I am on so many restrictions it seems sometimes like there is only veg left!

I am waiting to see a gastroenterologist as my GP is hoping he will do a colonoscopy to rule out bowel disease. I don't want it. I have to have CT scans every six months because I had kidney cancer two years ago, and I get so anxious beforehand and go to pieces. I have one due in two weeks that is causing me a huge amount of stress. I have to have the dye this time too and I am scared of it. I have claustrophobia.

I have been to the doctor about five times in seven weeks. It has been deduced that I am depressed to boot...who wouldn't be? Otherwise all blood tests have been fine and physical exam doesn't point to anything. I have just done a stool test and awaiting results. My GP really doesn't know what's wrong with me. I ended up in casualty one day as I collapsed on my stairs. I had been in a bad way for about five weeks. My sats were okay, blood test fine, chest x-ray fine..sent home.

I am starting to go out of my mind methinks! I am worried and sometimes it feels like I can't breathe through such stress. I get light headed, feel almost depersonalized, and sweat with fear at times.

Has anyone suffered in this way and for so long without diagnosis? I would welcome any kind of response.

Thanks smile

i have had bad nausea since Christmas. I have researched and found it could be stomach virus, vertigo, and others. I have taken steps to get a scope done so they can see into my stomach. This may be something you may want to do. you would need your doctor to refer you. If it is not that, keep on the doctor to find out what it is. This is the worst feeling ever. I dont have it if I lay down usually. As soon as I get up moving, here it comes. Good Luck. If I find anything that is helpful, I will post here.

At this time I have a prescription for nausea and it is not helping very much. I am scared to tell the truth. Its not normal.

My father has had stomach pain, nausea and gas for over two months, he can't eat and his sysmtoms are constant. The doctors have conducted all the tests and they still can't say what he problem is except he is elderly and his body is breaking down. Not much of a diagnosis, eh. We live in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hi, How is your father these days - I have similar symptoms

Sue I have a couple of important questions to help you with a diagnosis.

*Do you have morning nausea? (Nausea Starts Early In the Day and Gets Better throughout the day)

*Do you feel nauseas but never really throw up *that much*?

*How much are you eating? Do you have an apetite?

    *Do you have acid reflux/heartburn?

    *Upper abdominal pain?

    *Anxiety triggered nausea?

    *Achy Joints/Muscle Pain (Less Common)

    *Skin Burning (Less Common)

If you have most of these symptoms in particular the morning nausea, you need to have your G.I. order a gastric emptying exam. I am suspecting that you potentially have a condition known as Gastroparesis. This condition occurs in women 9x more likely than in men. Gastroparesis means that your stomach or duodenum are suffering either from nerve damage or nerve inhibiting. This causes your stomach to function at a lower rate than usual.

Unfortunately there isn't a cure for this disease, as the disease is symbolic of neuron damage. However there is hope depending on the root cause of the condition.

It is important to understand that gastroparesis is a symptom, not a disease within itself. This means that something in your body is causing the problem.

    Causes:

*Diabetes- This is the #1 cause of Gastroparesis patients, as diabetes causes nerve damage.

    *Schleroderma/ANA-

    *Multiple Sclerosis/Lou Gherig's Disease (ALS)

    *Mitochondrial Disorder/Disease

    *Autonomic Neuropathy

    *Acute Viral Infection

So here is where the good news comes into play... If your gastroparesis was onset by an acute viral infection like Epstein Barr, then you actually have a strong chance of recovering from this disease. The body will repair the neurons and will also repair the myelin sheath of the nerves that are damaged over time. You will know if your onset is viral based because your symptoms will get better after 6 months - 2 years. If your symptoms are gone before the 2 year mark you are CURED. If not, then unfortunately either the virus did more damage or there is another cause. It is believed that if you have Gastroparesis after the two year mark that you will have it for the rest of your life.

    Hopefully this helped.

hi thanks for info, interesting, as l would say yes to many of the questions you stated, also have interesticial cystitus which also damaged the myelin sheath,   But is Gastroparesis diagnosed by gastroscope or scan, or other ways. Thanks

Hi Oatman. Your post was interesting. My mother has been suffering from daily nauseaFor the past two and half years. She doesn't vomit, only sick to her stomach. During those days, she just drinks the liquid soup, once she gets a lil relief in about two weeks she can only eat ocra, boiled fish, and sometimes boiled chicken. Yes she has had just about every test done. Keep in mind fybromyalgia, dibetic along with some other things. Her weight evrrtis up and down depending on how many weeks she doesn't eat. She also has a growling in the stomach. My mom has good days as if nothing is wrong but her doctors keep telling her its IN HER MIND (my mom isnt crazy)Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi all, I've posted this on another post, but this seems a logical place as well.

I had knee and leg surgery 5 weeks ago. I have been so sick! Been to primary care Dr, emergency room and GI Specialst.

I wake up sick - nauseous, weak, very run down, sometimes with diarrhea and dry vomiting. Can't eat or drink a thing! By about 3:00 pm it starts to die down and by 6:00 pm I can eat a bland dinner - I eat it very slowly. I sleep sitting up and stopped taking all pain meds over 4 weeks ago.

the GI Specialst started me on pantoprazole. Waiting for C Diff results - but since it comes and goes it's probably not C Diff.

Can anyone offer any help? I have no previous history of this - it is all new since surgery.

    Hi Sue,

I have been having the same problem for about 6 weeks as well.

Every morning I wake up nauseous.

I feel too sick to eat yet I have to make myself eat. Sometimes I feel better after eating but just for a bit. I also noticed that I seem to get more relief from nausea in the evenings. I am very fatigued and find it to be a major effort to do anything at times.

I can barely take a shower.

im sorry sue to her the things you are going through

i have some reccomendations for you that may help if you are open to the and the may take some what of a process to see effects

    1. try gargaling warm salt water in the morning before you eat

    2. do breathing excersices when you are nauseas in this sequence

( inhale deeply for 3 full seconds and control your exhale for 31/2 seconds)

    3. put on relaxing music and lay down and massage your own stomach

    4. try to get fresh air

    5. try doing mild early morning yoga before you eat

(any form of exercise is going to detoxify you and could possibly make you through up, this is a good vommiting. your body is ridding toxins)

listen to your body before you eat after execsice and obay its cravings and what its not craving. ( except for significantly unhealthy things such as smoking)

    6. get into a affordable tai chi program or practice with a dvd

these are all mainly holistic approaches but it may help and may be the only alternative when doctors say they cant help

please try these methods for a week consistently and tell me how you feel

i will try all i can to help and your feedback is grand

thank you and hope you fill beter

At least l,m not alone in experiencing simular symptoms, started nr 2yr ago, first bout of nausea from waking to bedtime with loss of appetite lasted 8wks, in same year 4 other bouts 4-8wks, the nausea worse with exertion at moderate level, meaning 5-10min of household jobs and having to sit for 20-30min to settle it, trying heavy exertion walking 100yds or duvet cover on etc and the nausea is so heavy l pant and bent over with it, shopping is down to just supermarket leaning on trolley and home. l can drink tea, spring water, biscuit, toast, on agood evening if settled a bit will try bit of mash, scrambled egg, small sandwich chicken or cheese, yogurt, but never sure if that makes it worse next day. Gps tried anti nausea pills no help, ginger better. Its just an existence, sitting bored depressed, more so when a year goes by without diagnosis, but l did finally get a scope and scan, scope showed bit of tum inflammation as with duodenum, scan same but was told my kidney,s were slow, 4 times less than usual, but no gp response, as if no worry. l did have simular nausea and loss of appetite years ago with undiagnosed intersticial cystitus, but only lasted or day or so now and again along with severe ic pain, my ic is a bit agrevated with soreness and frequency but not severe, dont know if connection. With cystascope l was diagnosed with acid reflux, but any acid symptoms lwas aware of re heartburn  went when gall bladder removed for choicylitus. l was put on cimetidine for ic and ar, now gp wants me to try omeprazole, ppi. l also get tiredness, fatigue, sleepy, but gp denies nausea causes it, l cant see how persistent nausea wouldnt, but lost a lot of trust in gps long since when it took many years to diagnose ic. They let years of your life go by with suffering and with mass restrictions, before getting tests and specialists to study it, lf l won lottery it wouldnt be hols or car it would be into private clinic and get all done in a week, no wonder people are affected phycalogically when it goes on months and years,  But relate to many posts above, even down to the sticky eyes that go along with it.  l asked the gastroenterologist if inflammation could pass from the bladder to stomach, he said not, but said nerves in body become affected, not much wiser on that one either, but will try latest round of pills and waiting for cystascope, and will look up suggestions in post above. Sorry for long moan, hope youve all  improved.

Sue,   I am going through a constant never ending bout of nausea also. I never vomit, its just a constant sick feeling.  I have general anxiety disorder which is treated with xanax. that has always worked before, however it doesnt seem to be doing anything at this point.  I feel silly going to a doctor and telling him i feel sick. nothing else! i can say that when i get up and force myself to move around the house, yard, etc, it DOES let up some.  Sitting at my desk all day, is what makes it worse.  I feel so exhausted from it, sometimes i just sit down and cry!.  I want you to know, your not alone. I wish and hope that on this forum all of us can come to some sort of relief.   Im hoping for you to feel well soon.

I read somewhere there is 200+ different causes of nausea, vomiting, bloating etc (including worm infestations, tropical sprue, and many more not yet mentioned on the site). To differentiate all of this, evidence is needed- foods eaten, timings of illness, bowel movements (time and type) etc etc etc. Make a very detailed notes for at least two weeks for your health care professional is my suggestion. Even experiment with certain foods (dairy products eg) and note the effects.

I just found this site. Are you better? Im in the US, and have had nausea, vomiting and dry heaves for 3 years! I have had lots of scopes, CTscans, bloodwork, changed my diet completely to no avail.

I'm prediabetic, and the stress from being sick and trying to work full time as a special educator has been dreadful.

I just retired early over it, because the job is, in fact, killing me.

I have an appt at a large clinic here later this month. It will be interesting to see if I feel like my old self at all mid June, when my contract is up.

    This has been just awful.

    Thanks for your time.
