upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Congratulations you too have survived the grip of the T-Rex.

I've survived many a grip. ..but because of the rapid response as you think...I'll have to walk this off or bend ze toes. ..I have discovered that doing absolutely nothing and freezing all bodily movement. I believe it's the mirroring of nerve pain. Doctors are at a loss and tend to go for the bleeding obvious. One General Practitioners thoughts were Femoragic or Femoral nerve pain. I was treated as if my belt was too tight holding up my trousers. The nerves can be irritated wgere the belt on or above the hips causes an inflammation of those nerves ....so bad that pain comes in burning waves down to my knees.

But this is a bonus pain of T-Rex syndrome .

But not the same pain. I believe its the bonus of blood sugar. Perhaps we can all measure that the next time it strikes. Some in this forum have used quinine potassium saline water ...water . Vaginal pain and male genital pain really hits home. I have Endone in my night table and soda water. The bubble get the drugs in your system quickly.

I used to also bash the painful muscles. ..to make them wake up. I also take magnesium and vitamin E and fish oil

Look we all dread T- REX...but next time dont move.

Stay in control and go to a quiet place in your mind...use the pain as an instrument of diffusing the situation. The pathways i believe are using pain thats part of the onset of diabetes.

    Good luck on staying still.

2 NIGHTS, NO SPASMS. He's been drinking less tea with artificial sweeteners, replacing it with drinks with sugar, about half and half. That was the easy part. Now to get him to eat some high potassium foods!

Just wanted to add, my coworker started drinking bottled green tea with artificial sweeteners, she started having muscle spasms in her calves. She stopped drinking the tea and no more spasms.

I already cut out Splenda last year,I was using way too much of it, that didn't seem to be a factor for me.For me, it's seeming like overexertion and not drinking enough water are two of the biggest factors.I wish I knew what the answer is.Thanks for your input.

It seems like there's no ryhme or reason to these awful spells.I had one night before last straight up the back of my leg from my ankle to my hip.Another day it was the front by my shin, it used to be mostly inner thigh.

I'm at a loss.I'm really thinking not enough water is my biggest factor. If I would drink enough & keep doing that I would know but I have trouble drinking enough plain water.

Hi. I have the same thing but it comes in cycles.  I can go 2-3 months without then BAM!!!!!! I'll get them for a week or more every night.  It gets so bad that if they start while I am driving I have to pull over.  My Auntie and two friends have told me I need to drink more water and I probably have a Potassium deficiency.  I asked my doctor and he said "who knows"  Looking for a new doctor now.  Do any of you think I should take a potassium supplement?

Yes I take potassium and magnesium every night before I go to bed. A simple blood test will reveal this. Good your looking for a new Doc. I've never been deficient after being tested multiple times, but I take it anyway, I think it helps. My Doc also perscribed muscle relaxer that I take when I'm getting twinges in my legs. When you drink too much water it will make you deficienct in potassium however we all know water is good for us. Find a happy medium if you can. There is OTC medication called Leg Cramps I keep by my bed. They dissolve under your tongue.

i also take a muscle relaxer.  I also sometimes drink Tonic Water at night (it has quinine in it) and I take OTC Leg Cramps pills.  Thank you so much for your response.   I took the Potassium supplement and it seems to have helped.  I live in the US in the high deser so I drink 2- 2.5 20 oz bottles of water a day.

Thanks, I will definitely pick up this combination of drugs plus calcium from which other members of this forum seem to get some relief.  Anything to alleviate hubby's pain and discomfort.

I've had chronic calf spasms for about 4 years. My doctor has suggested medication, water, vitamins etc etc. None of this made a difference. It wasn't unit I started seeing a physiotherapist for my knee and he tried the tens machine and a heating pad. The ten machine once a week for 15 mins stopped the spasms. I went and bought one on Amazon for about 50.00 and it is my lifesaver. Sometimes I forget to use it when I haven't had one but they always come back. When I do I just put it on while watching tv for about 1 hour. Honestly it work and no medications. Hope this helps.

I have been to the hospital so many times I feel I have my own room. The dr's don't even know what causes it. I have heard its your disk in your back.. You have a lack of calcium.Drink plenty of water. They can say anything. I had 3 sessions of upper and lower dural injections and they didn't work. I did find drinking 2 glasses of 6 or 8 oz of 100% Black cherry juice has helped a little. anything is better than nothing. They also say when you go to bed don't confine your feet.in the sheets and blankets. let the be free from confinement. I have had these severe leg ,theigh, groin, ankle for years and I am still searching for help. I have had the leg streminties where they put needles in your legs, painful but it prove anything. Good luck , if you find something let me know and I will do the same,

I've suffered thigh and calf cramps for years, almost always at night. As I've aged, they increased until I was getting them almost every night.   I tried everything  no matter how crazy it seemed.  Went to countless doctors.  Finally, when getting a full panel of blood tests, my physician saw that  my iron and ferratin blood levels were just about non-existent.  I saw a hemotologist who told me that severe cramping is often associated with extremely low iron and ferretin levels.  I was started on intravenous iron, which I receive once a month, and I haven't had cramps since.  You may want your doctor to check your iron and ferretin levels.  Its a simple blood test.

I made some homemade cream using coconut oil, cocoa butter, magnesium oil and a dash of vitamin E several months ago. I've been using it on my legs every evening since, and I haven't had an "attack".. I've felt the scary twinges when I've over done it, climbed a ladder repeatedly, garden for hours, etc., but I haven't actually had the deep thigh cramp since.. Not sure if it's the solution or if I've just been lucky, but I'll continue with the magnesium cream, that's for sure!

I had an increase in the amount and severity of "come to Jesus" inner thigh cramps following laminectomy surgeries to relieve sciatic nerve impingement. My orthopedic doctor put me on 600 mg of gabapentin before bedtime, which has helped but not completely alleviated the episodes. Based on suggestions in this forum, I also started taking Calcium with Magnesium vitamins along with the gabapentin about two weeks ago. So far, I haven't had any significant cramping. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes over a longer period of time.

I have started to get really awful upper thigh cramps , until recently over the years I have had this twice  but the last few days every night. Like every one has said the pain is unbearable and I find nothing helps I just have to lie there until the pain subsides .I have never felt pain like it ,I have osteoathritis in my knees and last week had steroid injects and wow my knees are so much better .I just wondered if this has caused the cramps to be worse and often ? .I would rather the permanent knee pain to these bouts of horrific pain ,I was awake until 5 this morning scared to move and still that niggling pain today which makes me afraid to move . I would be so grateful of any suggestions that would help ,I have read " vitamin B tablets ,magnisium, and pottasium could all help ,anyone else tried any of these and did they make any difference ? I dread bedtime tonight .
