upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Hi Roberta! I just read your post and I hope your cramps are gone! I usually get cramps in my feet and lower legs, but I woke up this morning at 3:30 with sharp pains in my thighs! First it started in my right thigh, then in my left. So, I slowly got out of bed and sat in my chair, rubbing and massaging my legs with pain cream. The pain lasted about 5-8 minutes! Then I went downstairs after going to the bathroom. I took my meds with some water. (my usual meds that I take every morning before breakfast.) Then I watched tv and looked at my computer. I sent an email to my doctor. She answered later in the morning and said to hydrate! So, I've been drinking ice tea all day. But I've read other posts that said to take calcium and magnisium. And potassium! Well, I do take calcium and other vitamins but haven't been taking my potassium! I take the liquid, mixing it in ice tea cause I can't swallow the horse pill! I've also read to strech your legs and walk! I had taken muscle relaxers in the past. So, I might ask my doctor for another script for them!

I have recently started feeling severe muscle and joint pain and then was awoken in the middle of the night with such terrible pain surging from my knee up my thigh to my groin area and it was unbearable! I thought I was having a stroke or blood clot....I, too went to the ER in hopes of finding relief and was told "Probably a leg cramp." I have been trying not to self diagnose.... but don't have a docotr appt. for another week. Turns out after lots and lots of reading, I think it may all be contributed by my Lisinipril!!!!!! I take such a low dosage (2.5mg) I would have never thought it would effect me the way it has. Hip, back, calve, foot, hand joint pain.... groin, thigh, leg muscle cramps.... It is progressivly getting worse and I am now concerned for my long term health issues if it doean't cease. I am 47 and very ACTIVE! I swim, walk, play tennis and rarely sit down..... but with all this aching and pain, I am fearful and uncomfortable doing too much for fear of those horrible PAINS that keep me from having a good nights sleep.... I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and wondered if I quit taking my BP meds, if I will be able to "Get Back to normal"??

My leg cramps started about the same age and sound like yours. I'm now 74. Don't stop you BP meds. I take the same one but only started a few years ago. My sis tried quinine for her cramps prescribed by the doc - and it helped but...it also caused hearing loss. DO NOT USE THAT!
Here's what works for me: If I'm asleep, 800 mg Motrin (4 pills) and a heating pad. By the time it wakes me up I'm too far gone to get it for myself. It should be all over in 20 minutes. Or if I'm awake and can still stand, try walking around the house and stretching your leg if you can after taking the Motrin. At night be sure to keep your thighs covered with at least a sheet.
Good luck!

Sad to hear that you have joined this small band of sufferers. As you see we have tried a great many things between us. Sometime s people seem to get relief from a particular drug or therapy so all are worth trying.
i am seeing a consultant in January to try to sort this problem out which I have had for 13 years. I have trid pickle juice, hot compresses, pushing the opposite muscle, potassium tonic water, quinine tablets and many other things. But I am wondering if low thyroid condition is a factor? I take pills daily for this and I wonder what if it's the drug that triggers these dreadful and frightening attacks.

I think the cure all for everyone is going to be different. I cannot take B12 because my body runs very high with it already. So I use the Theraworx and a magneseum tablet daily. I'd be afraid to stop this for fear they come back so will do this probably the rest of my life! I never knew this was such a common problem!

I haven't tried this one. I have just informed my husband of what to do. I am unable to walk at all or move when it happens. Fingers crossed.

Hi...you've had what struck me once coming home whilst driving. I managed to stand up and switch drivers. I stuffed a hankerchief in my mouth and tried to not scream. I liken this pain ....as the T-Rex bite. Roberta when it strikes dont jump up dont try to walk it off.
Have you drugs with you on the night table with sado water or sparking waters. Take the drugs...with the water. The bubbles help get it into your ststem faster.. what's really bizzare is that it can go into each leg or hit them at the same time.
My gonads were particularly sensitive afterwards. It can strike at any time...especially for the male during intercourse. Thats my personal observation.
But now each night i take Vitamin E and Magnesium. ..with lots of water.
When your lying in bed just lie perfectly still. If you can lie in a semi foetal position and just slight bend the knees until the cramp ease's.
Get pain tabs into you. Get yout partner to get drugs and soda into yourself...into the system. Go with the pain. After 10 or 15 mins... it'll improve I Assure you. Other alternative is having cortio- sterioid injections that are xray guided...$300 to $400 each. ..remember to have Magnesium Forte capsules or tablets each day and night. ..perhaps abstain from vigorous or awkward lovemaking positions. I can only speak from experience. Even lone ministrations can bring these bouts of pain on. I don't wish to sound crass...but I'll do anything to avoid the bite of " T-Rex '...absolutely anythig. Infrequent Celibacy might help.
Good luck. Mike

Hi ,I've have these cramps since I was a child, they are horrific,, they get do bad my muscles in my legs stay sore for days,, once about 5 years ago I had one in my outer thigh that lasted for about 2 months ,doctors said there was nothing they could do it was a spasm, they sent me home with a cane ,i had to rent a wheel chair cause I couldn't get around ,it's was horriable, but it is cause by the stating drugs well so.e of them anyway ,they cause you to lose potassium , magnesium, water and salt in your body and calcium, so I use all of these ,not the salt so much as long as you have some in your diet, eat bananas, oranges, stuff like that that also have those nutrients in it I found that these really do help ,I started having them again tonight ,just realized that they had increase some BP meds and I had ran out of some of my supply, so gonna run tomorrow to get some more, if you stay on them it usually really does help, I am older female and believe me I would not tell you this if it didn't help ,have told my.mom and aunts and uncles all are 70' and above and they say that this has helped them all. It can be expensive I know ,some most insurance won't cover but if you use military Hospital or VA they will give these to you most likely ,if your doctor orders them ,everyone else try the dollar tree or watch for sales hope and pray this will help God bless all and Merry Christmas

Hi Brenda, thanks for your comments,I am a 63 year old overweight female with horrible arthritis in my knees but I take no medicine on a regular basis. I do not drink enough of just plain water & I thought that might have alot to do with it.Also another person commented about stretching your legs straight out before getting out of bed after lying in a fetal position & I found that to be helpful. But sometimes they just happen & there seems to be no rhyme or reason to why they happen. They also seem more apt to happen when I've had to stand or walk for way longer than usual & overwork my muscles. They are definitely excruciatingly painful & I wish there was a simple answer of what to do to avoid them, they are almost more than I can stand. Merry Christmas to everybody reading this,I wish you pain free holidays & beyond. Take Care.

My husband awoke a few nights ago on the floor beside the bed, his legs folded beneath him. He was in dire pain, and couldn't get up for some time because of thigh cramps. He'd never had them before! The day before he had tripped over a low rope used to anchor a top heavy hedge and fell hard on his stomach, so that his glasses flew off and couldn't be found for awhile. Since then he's had those horribly painful spasms in his thighs during the night. He was also complaining about his lower back after the fall. We tried baby aspirin, B12, Gatorade, lemonade with sugar and multi vit. He also rubbed a heat gel on his thighs. Eventually they subsided and he was able to sleep. He had a couple of calf spasms later in the day but rubbing and walking seemed to help. During the night again he was jarred awake with the same thigh spasms. I gave him half a banana which seemed to help and he was again able to sleep. He does take a statin, but has for some 15-20 years with no problems. I've read all the previous comments but no one mentioned falling in a way that would tense the whole body. Not sure if the fall caused it but thinking it's odd he never had these thigh spasms before. One additional comment, I realize that we are not eating properly as we once did, less veggies and fruit eating more
sandwiches, meat and prepared foods. We drink ice tea and coffee with artificial sweetener, not much plain water, no milk, but we eat cheese. He won't take calcium because he had kidney stones years ago. I am going get back to a healthier diet for one thing eating white beans, avocado, greens, dried apricots, bananas, salmon, baked potatoes with skin, acorn squash, yogurt and white mushrooms , all potassium rich foods, hoping that is the underlying cause. I hope you all find a cause and cure and share it!

I hadn't thought about falling, 4 years ago I tripped & fell forward really hard in a bad parking lot & shattered my elbow & arm.I am 63 & overweight & don't drink enough just plain water & usually when this happens I've overworked my body ( harder than usual).I get terrible muscle spasms all over, sides, stomach, above ribs, front of shins, even front of thighs & they are excruciating but the inner thighs are the most unbearable. I cry alot of the time, I've even had to pull over in the car.If I stretch to reach to pick up something I get them. They are just unbearable, almost take my breath away. (¬ in a good way) My mom & my nephew have gotten the inner thigh spasms and my son gets them in his ribs occasionally. As many people that suffer from these you would think somebody could figure out why &something to help it.I'm convinced not enough water & over-exertion have a hand in them.

I tend to agree with that as well as nutrition. My husband does everything @ 100 percent and then some effort, often not stopping to rest, eat, or drink enough. He had heat exhaustion several months ago. He was hospitalized over night, given I v solutions, and told to drink more, and not to use just sugar free drinks and foods. He had some odd things happen since then, the thigh spasms the most recent. He had slowed down some, was less active until recently when did some physical work and fell. We'll have to wait and see if the spasms continue after we change the diet .

Yes, I'll have to see if that helps me too.I haven't been eating as healthy as I should & too much sweets,& definitely not enough water. Thanks for your input.

Ive had toes that have been surgically altered. .Hammer toes wi5h joints removed and straightened. Meaning in getting up from the ground one leg has to be straight and out the back. If you dont do it fluidly then a big cramp can happen. Ee all know what can happen next.
Well when I kneel...or sit too long...upon going to brd especially in watching TV in a slouched position. ..T REX can strike that night. I always take 1000 mg of magnesium at night.
Just some insights.
