upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Stopped taking Rosuvastatin, Hydrochlorothiazide and Ramipril.   Serious painful cramping stopped.

I find that when these cramps at night wake me up,spraying the area with Deep Heat or rubbing in a deep heat cream usually relieves the cramp within a few minutes. The cream is probably better as the massage seems to help.I'm not sure but I am wondering if these cramps may be related to the Bendroflumethizide I take for blood pressure.

I have actually done this....using deep heat creams... To amazement, no relief.

It obviously doesn't work for everyone then. I am just lucky.

I experienced this last might. I also get them in feet and shins and pain is unbearable. The quickest relief I have found is a heaping tablespoon of yellow French's mustard. I may follow with hot water or heating pad but always do the mustard. It works quickly.

I have also used this method, trying to end the pain asap.... But to no avail.

I do understand & know this pain, yet it hasn't reached my lady parts... It is so painful I could scream out. I pray you are miraculously healed.

My neurologist has given me spinal nerve shots to areas L2,3,4,5 & S1

    Praying it will work.

    Hi everyone,

We really need to find a good treatment for this! I've just had two bad episodes and it was awful. I take the calcium magnesium, drink lots of water, and eat a banana every day for the potassium. And I still get these terrible, painful cramps. I'm wondering if we have some common thread: had back surgery, take a similar medication, etc? I will try the quinine water and the vinegar drinks! And the mustard seed-- how does one "take" mustard seed? I'll try anything!!!! The only thing that helps a little for me is a HEATING PAD. I keep it in bed with me at all times. I'm interested in hearing more! Thanks to you all for sharing.

Hil  I know what you have esperienced!  Just horrible pain!  I had heard over ad over about magnesium suppliments and honestly, it worked!  There are many different types of magnesium and some can upset your bowels (I mean, UPSET your bowels)  After some investigation, I discovered that one., magnesium glycinate did not cause those side effects.  Because I am on several medications, I did check with my doctor who okay'd it.  Problem solved....I dont know what happened or shy it started but it took about 4 weeks of muscle cramps from my feet completely up to and including my groin nightly and even while walking in the grocery store!.  BUT having said this, in the moment, I found that a washclocth run under hot water eased them for instant relief.  Good luck and speak to your doctor about magnesium...

Thank you for that info, I appreciate it very much.

Recently I bought Magniseum and Iron(separately) as my doc suggested and it will take some time I think, to get the beef.

      Okie dokie.. Thank you again

The tonic water was short lived. I have added 500 mg of B12 and 1000 mg of B complex and have not had any cramping in over a year.

B-12...that's interesting.  I'm deficient in B-12 but just attribute my fatigue to that.  I'm going to jump on this bandwagon and give it a try.  Does any specific brand seem to work better than another?
