upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

I also get them. in fact I just had a severe one about 1/2 hr ago. It hurts so badly, I want to cry. Heating pad slowly works. I take magnesium citrate, A , D drink lots of water...I still get them. It may be caused by my medications, and I will try the tonic water. Mine are infrequent, but are debilitating when they occur.

My husband has these same thigh cramps! He has had two major ones and several lesser ones in the past 12 hours. He had one a couple years ago that lasted for 45 minutes, he writhed in excrutiating pain. I don't really have a reply just letting you know that you are definitely not the only one going through this. I also came here searching for answers!

I recently found this post when I also started getting the exact same cramps in my thigh. The first one last year in august it was so bad I passed out, the second happened a few months later at home after sitting in a chair that put pressure on my back thigh for 2 days straight (my mom was in the hospital). I was able to stop myself from passing out with very deep breathing, because as you might know, passing out is the brains way of telling you you're not getting enough oxygen.

Finally the third one was only a couple months ago and was bad but I pulled through it. All seem to be triggered by strenuous activity of excessive sitting. With the last one I've been left feeling as if the cramp damaged my inner thigh muscles. I decided to go to the doctor and he told me that because I'm taking Enalapril for my high blood pressure, to stop taking all my suppliments immediately (calcium, magnesium, potassium), as they can cause additional muscle contractions when taken with the Enalapril. He checked my electrolytes and all my blood work was normal. But every now and then I still feel twinges of pain and spasms, but never a full cramp. A tiny spot on my thigh next to my knee, will harden into a lump and thats when I know I have to take it easy. I'm very over weight and diabetic, the doctor said it may be some sort of diabetic neuropothy and that my diabetes needs to get controlled.

I'm taking care of myself now, but all I have to rely on is muscle rub cream when my thighs feel sore and muscle rexlants (cyclobenzaprine) that he prescribed, that I take at night. It's odd to me that I'm getting cramps now, because before I was more overweight than I am now and was extremely active and never got any of these cramps. Now I have to watch how long I sit ( I use a cushion at work), i can't walk or stand for very long ( 30mins max), it's all very distressing that no one can figure this out. It's been two months with no cramp, only the spasms, but I hate felling like california (the big one is coming). Hope this helps someone.

p.s. I had a question I was taking magnesium oxide, but I was told that was the wrong one, that I should get magnesium taurate. Does anyone have any idea if this is true? It's much more expensive, but if it helps....thanks.

    Hello Roberta,

I read all your post and responses. I am going to try a few of these remedies. First, let me share that I do not have high Cholsterol or HBP, or sugar.  I have been having foot cramps for a few years, then leg cramps, But recently, Ive been having lower leg cramps combined with the foot cramps, some very painful that I can't move, others not as bad, now I am getting cramps in my thighs to my groin.  Today was the worst I ever felt. both legs cramped that I couldn't straighten them out. it was just awful. I finally rolled over onto my stomach and forced my legs straight and the cramps subsided. I drink plenty of tea, eat banas all the time, drink milk and even eat dark chocolate for Magnesium. Could this be an age related thing? I am 60. Sometimes I get mild cramps in my chest area too. I am going to try the Tonic water w/quinine, Vit D and B12, the magnesium and calcium.  I'm desperate for a solution. I dont think this is just normal aging. I will post my results in a couple of weeks.

      Hi Diana.

When I'm cramping I can't straighten my legs. I don't think this is aging. I'm also 60 but have had these cramps for years, in my upper body as well, and no doctor has suggested an effective treatment.Or cause!! I wonder.... Does anyone drink diet drinks regularly? I wonder if this could be caused by the aspartame in my Diet Coke that I drink once a day! Anyone else????

2nd reply to cramps... I have had good success with one Advil... muscles seem to relax in 5 minutes.  Can't promise results for everyone...but I feel it coming on, getting tight...I run for the med cabinet and pop one Advil.  Works.

Well,I am going to Mayo Clinic to try to find out what is causing these cramps...cramps seems like such a small word to describe this horrific pain! My appointment is for Tuesday of next week.  If anyone has suggestions on how to describe these "cramps",please share.  I have been having them now for eight years!  Tonight I had a horrible one in my foot and calf, felt like it was going to move to my thigh, but I was able to bend backwards and that seems to stop that one.  I wound up having to take a muscle relaxer for my foot/calf.  if you have any questions that might help figure this out let me know, I will be glad to ask.  wish me luck!

I just saw your post.  When you went to the Mayo Clinic were they able to help.  I know calling them cramps is an understatement.  I get the most horrible inner thigh cramps in both legs along with calf cramps.  I have passed out from them.  Dr. gave me muscle relaxers, which did nothing.  Then he told me to drink Tonic water, still no relief.  Just started going to a Neurologist and he put me on klonapin, it seemed to help, I didn't have any for about a week.  Now nothing, back to suffering.  I am worn out. Thought it was from my back, I had two kyphoplasties for vertabrae fractures, but MRI is negative.  I just want relief.  Thanks for a reply

    Hi

I occasionally get cramp on my top inner thigh and it really is the most excruciating pain, so bad I feel I'm going to be sick or pass out. It's impossible to walk or move It's also very scary. I have no idea what causes it, however what I do to get rid of the pain is to get someone to fetch a towel of any piece of material - place it around  my ankle and while lying down  - I lift the affected leg up . I have no idea how or why this works - but it does.

I have had really good luck lately by drinking a couple of ounces of tonic water every day and have yet over the last six weeks had another cramp. Evidently there is quinine in the tonic water and it must be the missing ingredient for my body chemistry. It tastes pretty nasty without the gin, which I do not add, but since I only drink a few ounces, I push through and force it down. Good luck. I hope this helps. I know how badly those cramps feel. I hope you find relief.

This is a list of drugs I was taking til September last year :-

      Levothyroxine. 150 mg

      Bendroflumethiazide 2.5 mg

      Ramipril. 10mg

      Aspirin

      Atorvastatin 20 mg

      Letrozole 2.5 m

      Brown inhaler

      Blue inhaler (if needed)

Since October 2015, I stopped taking all but the top 2. The Inhalers are on standby..

I drink a lot of tonic water and eat bananas.

I've never had another bout of excruciating thigh cramps since.. Reason I'm puting this on is to see if there's a common denominator

I buy the 8 oz bottles of calorie free tonic water at Walmart...great value brand. I pour a third of it into a glass and fill 1/3 of a can of Fresca into it. I save the empty bottles and put the remaining g tonic and Fresca into two other bottles, so I do not waste the soda or the tonic water. Good luck!

The only common denominator with me is the tonic water and bananas. Glad you are better.

Hi Geraldine, i am wondering what the Brown and Blue inhalers are? i am in Australia.

Great idea Geraldine to use the forum to try to find some common themes. For me the levothyroxine is the common denominator and the only drug I take routinely. I do take Crampex plus magnesium tissue salts but these are not really the answer and I would love to find a real solution.

I am still fearful after an attack 3 days ago.
