upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

    Hello All!

Was sad to hear that like me, others experience these upper thigh cramps (I knew I wasn't the only one), they are the worst! I never experienced these cramps untill after I underwent hip replacement surgery 5 years ago (I firmly believe their is a connection). Only after my hip surgery did I start to experience the same intense pain and absolute Horror that the rest of you have described with these cramps. I heard about a home remedy that suggests putting a bar of soap under the covers. It made sense from the standpoint of being aware of your leg position (do not bend at knee past a certain point). Has anyone else noticed a connection to this cramping after certain surgeries? I suggest using an athletic roller to loosen your legs up including your inner thigh.

I have them and I am terrified to go to bed at night. I have tried Caleb Treeze Organic Farm --stops leg, foot and hand cramps. All natural, no drugs, no chemicals. The brand name is Caleb Treeze. The country of origin is Unites States. (I copied this from Amazon's site.) It is nasty tasting raw apple vinegar, ginger, and garlic. I am saying it tastes awful! The instructions say to dilute it in water, but I swig it out of the bottle when I get one of these really painful cramps and it does get rid of it in a few minutes - seems like hours when I am in severe pain.

I have been taking Magnesium, Calcium and zinc tablets 2 preferably a few hours before I go to bed. I have had foot cramps, but not the groin cramps. I think I am up late from the  fear of them.

Haven't had any leg or thigh cramps in more than a year. I added Super B complex vitamins....4 every morning and 2 B12 vitamins also. So......I believe this was all a vitamin deficiency. B VITAMINS are water soluble so you don't have to worry about taking too many.

Was your pain at different times, when you are busy did you have them or was it when you were resting, sitting, sleeping? I have tried to document, even waited about taking the RX the doctor prescribed but when I do that the pain gets so bad I can't concentrate.  Topical does not work.  Thank you for the info on the B vitamin info... I'll certainly try that.

For those of you that could give me your pain free pain plan... please write to me again. I have not been reading as much lately because it is difficult.  I am having some issues all over it seems but do want to nip it all in the bud!

Jubi, my pain comes mostly when I have been asleep. However, it has happened on an hour plane trip, and in church!! Nothing I could put my finger on!

Hello everyone, I have just put my symptoms into Google and was directed here and thank goodness I was as what you are all describing is what I am experiencing now, tbh I thought I was dying. I am  disabled and suffer with bad arthritis and need new knees, I have a few things wrong with me including fibermyalgia, nerve damage to my lower legs and feet and not very mobile at all. My Upper thigh and groin area pain was so bad that I went to the doctors today as I haven't slept for 5 days, the pain was the worst I have even experienced and there was no let up from it for at least 5 - 10 minutes it was constant, I was sweating and felt really sick as well. I live on my own and just didn't know what to do, I'd say the pain was even worse than my gall bladder pain and that was bad. Reading through here has really helped, I didn't even think of Cramp but it does make sense, I do drink plenty of water but always seem to be thirsty. They have tested me for diabetes and that came back clear. I have noted a few things down that you all try and I know I must try and move more but it's so hard for me as my joints are very bad and I am very overweight. I want to thank you all again and I will mention it to my doctor next time I go, I remember my mum used to take quinine tablets from the doctor as she got cramp a lot, the pain is just awful and I am frighten to go to bed, I have had such a bad bout of it over the last five days I can't even pick my left leg up to get into bed it feels so weak. I look forward to keeping in touch on here and will check back from time to time. Onward and upward.

Michelle, please google Theraworx.  It's a lifesaver!  It's endorsed by Dr. Drew.  It's helped me by 90%  I order mine online because it's hard to find in stores.  Well worth the money!  Let me know how you do!

Thanks everso' much I'll have a look, I have just ordered Magnesium Tairate on someone recommendation but I will give anything a go to avoid that awful pain. My doctor was next to useless and got quite stroppy with me so I had no luck there and was at my wits end, so I turned to the internet. I'll see how I get on with these Magnesium Tairate and if they don't improve things I will certainly give the Theraworx a go, thank you.

I keep a heating pad very close by at night.  If I feel a cramp/spasm coming I will put the heating pad on it and wrap it around as best as possible.. more heat the better and it will make it go away much sooner then suffering it till it subsides.  I am going to try the Theraworx .. tried to save some money by using a magnesium oil, shich is what Theraworx is but it doesn’t work so wondering if the  Colloidal Silver in Theraworx is the catalyst for the magnesium oil to work.  Also going to try loading up on the B vitamins someone else suggested as I already take magnesium, potassium ( not as often), and D3.

Your post sounds like you have done your homework. I will try the vitamin B as I also take a couple of magnesium, Zinc and calcium twice a day. The Theraworx did not work for me, but when the cramp started it went away quicker.

I have been suffering terribly the last week or so with upper thigh cramps, it's been really awful, I must have spent a small fortune on trying to elevate  that awful pain. Last night I tried Antistax from Amazon, you rub it in you feet and legs but I was so desperate I decided I'd try and rub it in my upper thigh and leg where I get the pain, I took two Magnesium taurate before bedtime instead of in the day like I normally do plus I had two painkillers, I eventually got four hours sleep which is much more than I have got over the last week. I have received some more tablets that I got from Amazon this morning called 'Leg Cramps' as Crampex is not available in the UK, neither is Theraworx which I would have liked to try. I shall do the same as last night tonight and also take the Leg Cramps, I'll do anything to conquer this terrible pain. I started taking the B vits about a week or so ago, someone recommended Solgar VM - 2000, it's early days for them yet but I'm hoping something will kick in soon, it wont be for the want of trying that's for sure!
