upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Theraworx has been a godsend to me.  It's too bad for those it doesn't work for.  I'd be lost without it!

I was looking for theraworx but unfortunately they don't sell it in the UK, although Amazon carry it but they don't sell to the UK market, must be something to do with laws over here, we can't buy Crampex anymore here either.

Oh bummer!  It is wonderful.  It doesn't work for everyone, but for those it works for, it works fabulously!

I had a horrible upper thigh spasm last night. Never have had one. If my husband had not been there, I would have had to call 911. After reading some of the posts, someone had mentioned about back problems. Last night before bed, I mentioned to my husband that I had pain in my buttock like when I had a herniated disc problem many years ago....so, perhaps some relationship??  It hurt soooo bad. My husband finally said for me to lay on my stomach. I could not move so he literally pushed me over. If I could have, I probably would have socked him, but after lying there for a few minutes, the pain finally subsided. I am going to try:  Keeping a heating pad by my bed, buy some Theraworx, magnesium and drink Shwepps Tonic Water. I am soo scared about having another episode.....

I feel your pain Joan, they are so awful, I hope you have a better nights sleep tonight, I dread getting them, the pain is excruciating, I have been rubbing Asistix in my legs, its for varicose veins and circulation but has helped me, also drinking tonic water, I make sure I have at least a pint a day, and I take two magnesium taurate at night, so far so good, I dread getting one I really do.

I should have written ANTISTAX - you can get it on Amazon. I did try to get Theraworx which Suzie has recommended but it's not available in the UK. I think we try anything don't we when we get such bad pain?

I feel your pain. I also have tried a Calcium, Magnesium, and Zinc tablet twice a day. I really think it helps. I think, Joan, that the problem in you buttock is sciatica which I have too. It's like an electric shock that comes out of the blue. I hope you get relief soon, but you may need to see an Orthopedic doctor or a Neurologist..

Thank you Michelle. I am going to order the Asistix. I need to get some of the tonic water...I ordered the magnesium today. How many mg do you take? My thigh is very sore today...no problems last night although I did use the heating pad off and on during the night and woke up constantly. Really scared of getting another cramp!

Michelle, how about emailing Theraworx and asking them if they could help you out.  This stuff is amazing and has given me my life back!

I take 250 mg of magneseum a day along with Theraworx, you can google that.  It has saved my life, really!

hello all, I think its time for an update on my thigh cramp situation if anyone is interested. It's been almost 3 years since my last cramp and I'm very happy about that.

In case you didn't read my original post i'll give you the short version. Diabetic, overweight, doctors don't know why i got painful thigh cramps that made me faint. Took all the usual recommended supplements, magnesium, calcium, potassium, mustard, pickle juice, muscle rub, nothing worked, doctor said all the supplements actually contribute to leg cramps. Have acid reflux but my meds for that also contribute to leg cramps. So basically I was up a creek.

Anyways here's what has helped me for almost 3 years now, a personal vibrating MASSAGER. Yup, the kind you buy when you have back problems. Best 30 dollars I've ever spent. I massage my entire thigh and leg once maybe twice a day (morning and before bed) and that's it. I've always suspected it's some sort of lactic acidosis, a build up of acid in the muscle like after a workout when your muscles hurt. At least that's what I believe might be wrong with me, idk no doctor can pinpoint it. Anyways back to the massager, I started off with a vibrational massager, it was more gentle on my leg and when I started to feel like I was making progress, I bought a much stronger percussive massager. Trust me I know how it sounds, there I am going to town on my thigh with a massager, but hey its been years since my last cramp. I'd almost given up hope, don't get me wrong, my leg still hurts everyday, I believe my last cramp was so severe it damaged my thigh, but that's life i guess. At least I'm cramp free. I hope this helps someone. Thanks

Glad you found something that works!  For myself, I use Theraworx.  I am in the states and apply it when I go to bed.  A total lifesaver for me!  I will never ever be without it!

So glad you found something that helps you too! What exactly does it do for you?

I am definitely going to try the massager. I have tried everything else that has been suggested with this thread and I still got a cramp the other night....but, it did not seem as severe so perhaps the magnesium, theraworx have worked to some degree.

Goodluck joan, hope it helps you. If you do end up buying one make sure it's a full size one, not the small ones. Also ease into the massage, your muscle may twitch or hurt, so be gentle. Once you can stand the vibration then give yourself a thorough massage.

I bought this one 2 years ago, still works, but honestly it's really a crap shoot, meaning they all have quirks sometimes they work sometimes they don't, there is no perfect one. This one just happened to be ok.

"Lush Wand Intensity Wireless Therapeutic Massager" on Amazon is the one I bought. It's not great but it's good.

Thank you. I will check it out.

Have you heard of getting the thigh cramps during the day?  I have never had one during the day, but it concerns me.

I have a doctor's visit on Friday to discuss these cramps. It will be interesting to see what she says. I will let you know.

Yes, most of mine were during the day. One after a very strenuous day and the other for no reason, along with a couple at night. They don't seem to have a pattern. Good luck with your appointment.

Joan be sure to let us know what your doctor says!  My doctor really had no idea other than to tell me to take a magneseum suppliment along with using the Theraworx.  I don't get the during the day.  And its been months now since I had them at night.  The Theraworx is a godsend!

These cramps seem to be a very common problem.  Will be interested in hearing your doctor's thoughts!

my doctor had one himself, so he's been doing some investigating. He told me CoQ10 was one of the calmers that he found. I ordered some from Amazon to see what it will do, but in the meantime, I have had stem cell injections into my back three weeks ago, and the cramping everywhere in my legs has s topped. Now I am pretty convinced it's from a pinched nerve or muscle.

Interesting.....I recall someone mentioning about having back problems and when I had my first thigh cramp, I had been complaining about my back hurting. Perhaps there is a relationship.

I will bring this up to my doctor on Friday....

Joan, did you have your appointment today?  If so, how did it go?

Joan, my back got so bad and steroid shots only helped for 2 months. Almost a month ago seeing my back doctor, he gave me the option of surgery and fusion to my back. The only other option was to try placenta stem cell treatment. This is not covered by insurance. I have not had a cramp since, so I wonder if the cramps are pinched nerves or pinched muscle. He said I cay not see improvement for 1 to 2 months. I can tell the pain is better on my right side, but not the left. I will see the doctor next week.

I am sorry to hear that. I have heard stem cell is the way to go, but I do not think my insurance will cover it either. I gather you have tried physical therapy?
