upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

I am soooo sorry. Please read other posts regarding the thigh cramps. I have tried everything that others have recommended but I did get a cramp the other night although it did not seem to be as bad as my previous one which was horrible. I am going to try using a massager in hopes that it will relax the muscles before I go to bed.

    Good luck Roberta

If it feels like your getting tazered, then it's likely connected to spine issues.

Anyone with a herniated disc is taught to fear this pain occurring in the legs.

If it comes when you sit weird, but goes away if you lay on the floor, that's probably it.

    I also have GERD.

I suspect that either fluid or food is pressing on something internally. If I drink too much water or eat before going to bed, I get leg pains when I lay down. Sit up and they go away. ????? I make sure that I take ferusemide during the day to get rid of fluid.

Hi. I had repeated severe cramp in both inner thighs lasting up to an hour and triggered during this period by bending my knee. The only thing you could do was fall to the ground ( not handy if you're doing a bit of rock climbing!) - Ive been trapped several times in the hills because of the pain and eventually walking down trying to keep your legs straight is not easy! It would come on after 4-5 h of walking or 2 h of search dog training, and i had to stop training the dog. The pain was agonising and as bad as gall stones and you just wanted ti be sick. Eventually realised it started about the same time as starting omeprazole given by a consultant for stomach acid reflux, which i knew i didnt have and was on it for 10 years. As soon as i stopped taking it, the hour long cramps stopped - i can still trigger the cramp with exercise or having a chair dig into the back of my knees, but that only lasts as long as any other cramp. Other drugs for stomach acid production have the same effect. i suspect its due to the drug decreasing magnesium levels, which it is known to do in a proportion of patients. Supplements dont seem to do much for me. Dont know if this might help someone else

I wonder if you need some magnesium because of the fact that this happens when you exercise. Eating foods high in it and pottasium (before trek) which work together in your muscles for retraction and extention, may stop it. Worth a try. Works for me with water aerobics. Magnesium powder/water consumption immediatly with cramp stops it instantly.

This helped me too, heating pad, but it is a sign you are needing something to stop them. I have posted several places on here about how my doctor told me to start taking 1/2 tsp of magnesium glycinate powder daily and they stopped. Most people, because of the way we do not eat enough fruits and veggies are low on Magnesium. It doesn't show up in blood test. I would try either the powder increasing at 1/2 tsp daily until relief is found, then sustain. If loose stool starts you have reached the max need, and need to go down 1/2 tsp. I have found the more Mag rich foods I eat, the less powder I need. I hope it helps! Blessings

I can tell you I understand this terrible pain. It is not Pottasium that you may need, it is Magnesium. This is hard to get to show up in blood work. As soon as I start to feel the pull (after having so many of these, I notice this now) I run take a scoop of magnesium glycinate powder ( I order online from a vitamin store my doctor suggested, but you need asap, so look at health food store, or other place that sells vitamins)mixed with water and immediately it stops. This has been a tremendous relief to have. If you want to go ahead and start taking the magnesium, it will not hurt you because your kidneys will get rid of excess. If you take too much, you could get loose stools. I would start out as my doctor told me with 1/2 tsp once a day. If no loose stool (which I doubt since you are cramping) go up a half every day until you get loose stool. Go down half tsp if needed from there and stay there until you get your Magnesium up. I have researched this a lot and so many Americans are suffering from Mag shortage. Mostly because we do not eat a good fruit and veggie diet anymore. If you could add mag rich foods to your diet, you will need less powder. Magnesium works with Pottasium to make your muscles work, so that is why you cramp when it is not there. Also, Mag helps you sleep, so if you are having problems in that area too, you may see some improvement. Do a lot of reading on Magnesium foods and learn what you can do naturally with food, and I hope it will help you get relief!

I had gastric bypass 13 years ago and asked people on the forum if any of them had GB, but did not see any connection. Now I know, that because I have had GB, I do not absorb nutrients like regular people, so I need even more than normal. We are definitely what we eat, and we all need to eat better. I have stopped sugar and salt too because I had high inflamation with my auto-immune problem; fibromyalgia. If you want to know store you can text me at nine three 1/ 4 zero 9/ five 4 7 1. I will be glad to tell you, but they do not like advertising on here. Blessings to you!

I'm suffering from really bad muscle spasms in my left thigh. They are so painful I can hardly walk. It's painful for me to lay down and sit up. What type of muscle relaxant were you given? I've tried everything from Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Motrin. Nothing works.

Hello i was getting the horrific thigh cramps and still do occasionally but since l went to my doc i am taking 200 mg quinine & it has more or less stopped them. But if i miss one it bangs straight back in. But doc has mentioned i can't stay on it permanently which is terrifying me. I also try and eat one banana a day. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I plan on eating bananas more, and I was told taking Magnesium helps also. I
