upper thigh muscle cramps

Last night at 11:00 I got really severe muscle cramps in both my upper thighs. They came and went for over an hour. I was totally in the worst pain ever. My husband tried to help me take a warm bath besides drinking 2 bottles of water The pain would come approx. every 5 seconds It went up into my vagina area and then would stop only to start again. My husband took me to the emergency room. They started an IV giving me valium and electrolytes with potassium. My muscle cramps were getting worse. After 5 hours of them I just wanted to die. The doctor finally came back in and they gave me morphine. The muscle spasms stopped right after. They sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxants. I hadn't done anything strenuous and I drink plenty of water. It was the worst experience I've ever had. What could have caused this and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

About a year ago I had a severe Thigh muscle spasm/cramp!! I've had a couple of Charley horses in my life bt Nothing as this! It started in the inner & center of one Thigh & within 15 min the other Thigh same area began & at the same time! I didn't know what was going on. I've read people say massage or walk it out but it rendered me Incapacitated! It was so severe I Couldn't move- so anyone what do you do! It lasted an hour. I got clamy, sweating, I may have been hyperventilating, &scared. I just couldn't figure out what was happening & couldn't get up to get water, a Tylenol, anything. MY internal Dr didn't know what it was, in fact they seemed uninterested! Only when I told my Cardiologist did he say drink some Tonic water diet or reg. I keep at least 2 bottles one at bedside, one in kitchen, it seem to help somethg @quinine. Bt I have been told & read not to drink too much. Ningiukuluk's comments were helpful & will go over the test taken with my doctor & check my Blood press med wPharmacist! I've been feeling again like the Spasms want to return. VIT D3 seems to help for Some reason?? Any thoughts frm patient or professional, these spasm can take your breath away & we want answers &healing!

for thoses suffering frominner thigh cramps.  When the attack accure...press as hard as you can into the muscle...spread out your fingersand inlist help.  keep pressing HARD!    they wil labate much quicker, not get as bad  and should prevent them from.spreading.   ALSO get a magnisium supplimet from Cardiovascular reaserch. It is the only one that works.    If you local health food store dosn't carry it,you can google it. I have tried them all this one works for me.   start out with 2 in AM...2 before bed.  on nights when yiou FEELIT coming on...take 1 or 3 more.  This will work guys....I am relieved, but so sorry to hear of so many sufferes, CUZ my dr said that what i was describing dosn't happen!!!!    Drs ARENT MAKING A TON OF MONEY IN THIS SO THEY DON'T CARE   TERRI lEE

Thanks Terri Lee - I've been experiencing these thigh spasms off and on for at least 10 years - over last year taking 300mg calcium/magnesium daily. Thought I would give my body a break from pills and last night had the st horrific experience - both thigh muscles spasm for about 20 min - fighting passing out.

Same experience with medical field - just pass it off. No one to really talk with.

      Thanks for sharing

Four years ago I started with thigh cramps I was on holiday in Turkey all inclusive and I put it down to to much alcohol . But it starts when I haven't had a drink last night it started in my feet then quickly shot up to my thigh I jumped out of bed or I should say fell out the bed screaming husband can't do anything for me but last night was the first time it was in my shins which I have never had I felt like I was going to vomit with the pain I have had quinine tablets before but don't take them all the time I quickly took one when the pain went away and only had two more cramping pains after I think that was till the quinine took affect but I have drank tonic water in the past which I think does help

I suffered for years...within the last 2 months, i reduced the amount of artificial sweetener substantially.  The cramps have just about disappeared.  The only artificial sweetener I get now is in a diet softdrink 1-2 per week.  I also started taking co-q 10.  I'm not sure but I'm sure that has helped.  However, last week I started getting a cramp in my upper thigh and stretched my back, like I was going to do a back bend and it went away.  I think that some of my problem is spine misalignment.  Go to a chiropractor if it continues.  I think it will help.

Roberta, I also started taking Vitamin D-3.  Hope this helps!

I'm glad you said this because i've been having the same problem. At first my right leg just hurt in the morning and at night and of course it got worse. I thought it was sciatic nerve or something cause I have osteoarthritis in the spine area and take tramadol so its manageable. It wakes me up in the middle of the night and I didn't know what it was cause its gotten worse so that its hard to walk. I researched on line and it could be a wide range of things so it finally got so bad, with the pain lasting for hours until I take a muscle relaxer or something similar, that I had to go to emergency. I'd had an xray done previously and my doctor said it didn't show anything, but I work full time and was limping with the pain.

I had another xray and even a CT scan and the ER doc couldn't find anything and then I got to talking to someone about muscle spasms and that made more sense that being advised of a hip replacement by some people. It happened last night and always the same place, upper thigh in front although sometimes I think its in the but area as well and I can hardly walk. I took naproxin over the counter pills and that's the only thing that helps, the tramadol does too but I can't take that at night.

It doesn't happen that bad all the time but I have to take asprin every day now. I will ask to see a orthopedic specialist but I think my potassium is low cause I never eat bananas which i've started and i'm not a big water drinker. It isn't a cramp cause i've had those and they do go away. Its only the right thigh that this happens to. I didn't do anything strenuous or fall or anything. Hope this helps a little

Hello janburns...I came across your discussion while looking up sites on upper thigh cramps.  About 3 weeks ago I had abouta week of cramps in my toes, legs and 2-3 times in my upper thighs.  The ones in the thighs were extremely painful.  After that I had to start using a cane because whenever I walked the muscle in the thigh had an extreme pain making it impossible to walk without a cane.My doctor took xrays that didn't show much except arthiritis but no break or fracture in the femar bone.  I am taking Potassium pills, drinking alot of water and stretching exercises.  Went back to the doctor yesterday and told him that I still had to use the cane so he changed my antiinflamatory medicine.  My question to you is :  did your pain in the thigh last for quite awhile and if it did, what did you do to get rid of it.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Have been getting upper thigh cramps for about 6 months.  They are unbearable bringing me to tears.  My husband doesn't know what to do.  Have tried muscle rub, no help,  stretching seems to make it tighten more, have found that taking a tablespoon of yellow mustard brings relief within minutes.  Today I have had this happen twice, each time while getting out of bed.  Seems that by turning my leg a certain way sets it off.  My husband wants me to go to the ER, but after reading the posts I see it really is no answer.  I also suffer from leg cramps and toe cramps, but these are bearable until they work their way out.  I also have found that Apple Cider Vinegar Tablets bring relief, but not as fast as the mustard.  Give it a try, hope it helps you.

I agree and relate with so many of these respondents, let me add some clues.  I equate the pain and suffering with some form of body electro-shock, crumpling me up in SEVERE pain, and holding that pain for minutes, if not a full half hour.  But I think I have stumbled on some clues.  My feet... I walk around without slippers on cold floors.  I drink ice cold water or ice cold soda, then go to bed and sleep on a mattress that is 78 degrees room temp, except for directly under my body.  I keep shifting my body because I feel cold... my 98.6 body is competing with a 78 degree mattress.  I tried drinking warm soup and hot tea with honey before bed, slept entirely through the night, no cramps.  I realized, we are sleeping on ice cube mattresses.  My wife can sleep with her legs outside the covers, I can't.  Certain bodies like mine expel so much heat, even sweating at night for no reason.  I reach over and feel a very cold mattress where my body is not laying.  Now I am wearing slippers on the floors, and socks and heavy pajamas when I sleep.  Tonic water instead of plain water, and one multi-vitamin pill in the morning, also orange juice. If I feel a cramp coming on, I place one leg over the other so the body heat of both complement each other.  I think cold plays a role, and not enough warm fluids before I go to bed.  No cramps for 4 days!

I have been "dying" (though not literally) to share my experience with my upper thigh cramps but have not taken the time to do it. So, I'll reply to your post and do it. My upper thigh leg cramps, as many others[' cramps, are murderously painful, near debillitating. Last week, I got a left thigh cramp followed by a right thigh cramp. That night in bed, I got both a left and a right thigh cramp simultaneously. Misery followed, of course. BUT, I did something to get relief! No, this is not a commercial to sell some product, though I feel like that's the way I'm writing this.

I stretched to get rid of it. And, I'm waiting for the next occurence to see if I can get rid of it again, by doing the same stretch. Right now, I'd like others to do it and report back to see if this is fairly consistent as a relief. So, here's my stretch:

Normally the pain crunches you up. For this stretch, you must force yourself to first straighten up. Then, raise your hands over your head and then keep stretching backwards by arching your back. Keep on going as far as you can. Feel that stretch and hold it as long as you can. Please, do it now when you don't have the cramp to see what you can do without hurting yourself, and your back. Feel the stretch to the whole front of your abdomen and down your waist and down your leg.

That's it! It was wrentching to get to that position, but, once I was there, the pain scooted off nicely. Please, somebody else try this and let me know if it works. These types of cramps are hardly fun at all. Anyway, this worked for me once and I'm waiting for the next inner thigh cramp to try it again. Meanwhile, I'm doing the stretch almost daily, or several times a day, to see if I can prevent any future bouts with this horrible cramp. Hope this helps. -p

I've had these thigh cramps since I was 48 - now 73. The first one was after a day of vigorous yard work. I was laying on the couch and suddenly found myself on the floor in excruciating pain. My husband tried to help me up but I could not stand to move.  Now they also happen sitting in a car, an airplane, on the couch, in a chair or in my sleep.  Sitting in a chair for a long lunch or a workshop can bring it on. I went through a period where I didn't want to leave my house for fear it would strike again.  My sister also has them, but unlike me she went to her doc and he put her on quinine BUT word of warning, she also started loosing her hearing, so I wouldn't try that. After going to several specialists, her pharmacist found the problem, quinine.

If I start walking immediately I can get to the kitchen, using furniture and walls to hold me up and take 800 mg ibuprofen.  If I wait a second too long I can't move because of the pain. If it hits at night my husband brings the ibuprofen and a heating pad, and after about 20 minutes I can move again and eventually go back to sleep.

Oh my god I agree with what you say but cannot take Ibuprofens as they rip at my tummy lining so crunch on paracetamols and with a hot water bottle they tend to go away after around 5-10 mins although I do have to walk around otherwise the pain makes me want to scream. I really feel so helpless and I am sure I have woken up a few of my neighbours with my screams. :-) I find I got addicted to quinine tablets a few years back and had to stop taking as they stopped working after a while and found I needed more and more.
